This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
The new reworked Aatrox is kinda tricky. He deals a LOT of damage with his Qs only, plus they are easy to hit on Urgot. Try to bait out his first 2 Qs and don't get too close for the 3rd. His cooldown on his Q is high so then you want to act. Always keep some distance and respect him. If he hits you with his W, you can either walk away or E away to be safer. You want to poke him pre-6. When he gets lvl 6 be careful, he can tower dive you with no problem, plus you're not that tanky. If he activates his Ultimate and starts chasing you or tower diving you, don't waste yours in hope to kill him because it won't. Try to turn it around on him by all-ining him after he ressurects with your Ultimate.
Fiora
To me Fiora is ez. You poke her easy with Q. Also try to auto her when possible. When you hit level 6 try to bait her so you kill her. You do that by waiting for her to jump for a last hit on a cannon minion. Then do your combo and she's not getting away.
Teemo
Really annoying. But for Urgot not that hard to deal with. Try getting early mercs and keep to your usual build. Try to poke him with your Q. There's a slim possibility you kill him pre-6. After 6 try to zone him out of cs and maybe buy Oracle Lens so u spot his shrooms when you engage. If you get him with E and you have ultimate- he's done for. Don't be afraid to fight him too. You might want to consider taking Nullifying Orb just to survive his all-in.
Akali
Early she is gonna hurt. Mid- late game you should be able too deal with her unless someone feeds her. Don't forget the Oracle Lens!
Cho'Gath
I find Cho'Gath to be difficult against most champions. He's simply the best tank at the time (Patch 8.13). You will be able to deal with him early-mid game (before 6). But after that it gets out of hand. Especially if someone feeds him. Try to fight him with the team. Unless he is really far behind you won't be able to beat him 1v1 late game.
Darius
Darius is Darius. Watch out if he has Ghost as a summoner spell. Poke him with Q during the laning phase. If he tries to engage on you, Q him to slow him and E away. When he reaches 6 you don't want to fight him unless you have level 6 as well and he is low. Careful though! He might be baiting for a gank. Your job is to make sure he doesn't get ahead and stays behind. Poke, poke, poke. Zone him out of cs and possibly experience. If he gets ahead poke him. Wait for a gank or bait under tower. If your team wakes up they will help you manage Darius.
Dr. Mundo
As of right now Dr. Mundo is really strong. His Q can easily hit Urgot because of his size. Stay behind minions as much as possible. Try poking him although it won't help much. Your job is to try get level 6 before him and eliminate him. After that play safe and poke. Try to kill him only if you're sure he hasn't ultimate up.
Ekko
Like most mid lane champions that go top, Ekko won't be that hard. Poke him early. Try to E him when he goes for a cannon minion and follow up with all your abilities. Pre-6 or after 6, you should be able to handle him. If he is getting ahead for some reason, build early MR (Magic Resistance) like Mercury Threads or Adaptive Helm.
Gangplank
This matchup is a tricky one. Late game he completely destroys Urgot. So, early to mid game is the way to go. Try to poke him and keep him low. There's a bigger chance of ganks coming his way because of the sole reason he is Gangplank. If you are going for a kill on him, he must be really low hp (pre-6). After 6 you MUST bait out his W by damaging him enough to use it( which will be really difficult). After he has used it, try to engage and finish him with your ultimate. Baiting out his W before your ultimate is key because he can simply use it as you ult and cancelling it, leaving you to look dumb to your team. I agree, it's annoying but that's how you deal with him.
Garen
Watch out if he has some shady Domination runes and Ignite. He would try to rush you level 2 with Flash. If he is a standart Garen though- just poke him. Max Q as always. Wait for him to jump to a cannon minion and just as he is doing it- E him and then finish your combo. The lane is easy but just watch he doesn't get fed from other lanes.
Gnar
Annoying as always. He is going to poke you a lot. Try to dodge and return with Q. In most cases he will win the trading game. You don't want to push the wave in unless you're backing. In most cases neither will kill the other. If you want the upper hand try to out-poke him and zone him out of farming. If you want a kill you can last hit only the minions and let him push in the wave to your turret. Wait for a jungle gank or intentionally get low to bait him under tower where you E him, then W for the shield and damage and Q for slow. If you have ultimate up as well- you're golden. Most Gnar players will tower dive you when they transform from Mini Gnar to Mega Gnar so be on the lookout. Late game shouldn't be too hard against him UNLESS he gets ridiculously fed and ahead of you.
Illaoi
It's all about being smarter in this matchup. Try dodging her Q and while she's in the animation drop a Q on where she's standing. Also stay behind your minions for the most of the laning phase to avoid being caught by her E. If you hit 6 first and she is already low because of your poke- you can go in for the kill. To make it easier just don't get caught my her E when you engage and her Ultimate will be useless. To beat her late game abuse the team CC (crowd control) and she will be useless. Try to take her out first of the team fight if she ults unless there's a really fed carry on the enemy team you should worry about more.
Irelia
In Patch 8.13 Irelia is broken. In most games she is a pick or ban. When you find yourself against her try to poke hard with your Q. Try avoiding her E stun as hard as possible and DO NOT let her get ahead. If you know she is going to dash to you or stun you and dash to you with her Q- pop W and press E before you're stunned so you can go in your E animation as you're stunned. Use Q and R to try and kill her. Pop ult after you've stunned her with your E. Otherwise it's risky to try catch her with R because of her dashing around. You can try your luck if you know her Q is on cooldown. She will shred your W shield and if she has stacked her passive it will be near impossible to fight her. If she gets ahead- your whole team is in danger. Care.
Jax
An easy matchup unless he gets fed. Do your usual Q poke and rush him level 6. Keep him under control and try to zone him out of cs and even experience. He will complain a lot to his jungler so be on the lookout for a gank.
Jayce
Skill matchup. Who can out-poke the other the best? Be careful early game and do not waste your mana on farming too much. Try to avoid risky trades and keep high health. Try baiting him level 6 to finish him off. Don't try to zone him off of minions- it's not gonna work unless you're fed like a .... a... what do they call em? Oh yeah- fed like an UrGOD.
Kayle
Really annoying. Watch out this guy doesn't get ahead of you. Try to poke with Q only and avoid her poke. Just farm from distance. If you want to kill her after 6 with your Ultimate you should bait out her Ultimate first. Make sure you don't Ult right after you E her when she has her Ult up. This might mess up your combo and even the kill. Play a more careful R when you slow her with Q or she is close to you. Still you can go yolo and any time and just shoot for the stars. I hope you hit her :). Don't feed her because late game she'll be one hell of a problem.
Kennen
This little bugga. Stay behind minions to avoid his Q poke and return with your own Q poke. Trying to E him is pointless since he will E away most of the time. Don't try it unless you're sure he doesn't have E up and you have slowed him with Q. If you succeed to catch him with E, then put R on him, W and try to finish him off. Flash if you have to. Kennen mustn't at any case get ahead. If he does- your entire team is going to suffer thanks to his R. Be careful casting your ultimate on him because most of the times he will have either a Stopwatch or A Zhonya's.
Kled
Holy sh*t where are we!? If this guy gets you with his Q- he's practically working against himself, letting you E him for free. Don't go all monkey crazy on him and keep in mind his passive. Unless you've just got him off of Skarl (I think that was the name of the lizard XD) don't try to carry on with the trade (especially later into the game). I don't find him hard to lane against. He might be getting some help from the jungler because of his many tools to help him work the gank out.
Malphite
Very early into the game you will lose thanks to his Q poke. Try to avoid any other of his abilities in the early laning phase. After 1 or 2 recalls you should be getting better than him. Then you start poking hard with Q and W. Zone him out. Beware ganks and bait out his Ultimate. Should be an easy kill after this. I don't see him getting ahead of you. If he does... well maybe you should read more from my guide :). Keep in mind that he is a Malphite after all and his Ultimate can change the outcome of team fights. That's the only reason I'm putting him in level 2 Green.
Maokai
Believe it or not, Maokai is nasty in 8.13. For some unknown reason he can out-poke and out-damage you during laning phase. Play safe and try your best to keep distance and out-poke him with Q only. You only can kill him under tower when he tries to dive you by doing your everyday combo (down in the description) or by asking for a gank. Ult him right after you E him because he can dodge it afterwards with his Q. He has great gank potential with his kit and Ultimate so beware. Late game he is going to hurt 1v1 and in team fights. So it's up to you to keep him as behind as possible.
Master Yi
I'm surprised as well but... some people actually play Master Yi top in patch 8.13. It's really easy. You out-poke him by miles. Don't get ahead of yourself though he is a threat if he gets too close. Mid- to late game he might be too difficult for you to handle. But if you take advantage of his mistakes you will be able to out-poke and out-damage him and zone him out of both farm and experience.
Mordekaiser
You will be surprised how much damage you deal to this guy. The only thing you have to be careful of is his E poke. And of course fighting him when he has his Ultimate clone.
Nasus
Easy early game. Poke, poke and poke. He will be asking a lot for ganks so keep in mind. The best you can and should do is zone him out of farm and experience. If he goes in to farm or simply doesn't respect you- punish him. In the very late game though be extremely careful if he had stacked up good during mid game.
Nautilus
Interesting matchup. I personally don't have much experience it this matchup. He might receive a lot of ganks because of his gank-helping kit. Don't underestimate him and try to keep him behind. If he gets ahead he will be a problem both to you and your team. He can do quite a lot of damage all by himself.
Olaf
Watch out for Olaf! He is guaranteed to hit most of his Q's. Ask for ganks and don't try to fight him. His Ultimate totally ignores your E under tower combo with the ultimate. If you want to win against him ask for plenty ganks and try to out-poke him with Q and W and ignore his poke. Getting Doran's Shield or Corrupting Potion in this matchup is advised.
Ornn
Another strong tank. Trading with him will end up in his favor most of the times. If you're careful and dodge or bait out his abilities early you can out-poke him. Neither player will get a kill most of the times. If he gets ahead he will easily kill you even under tower. He might receive a lot of ganks because of his gankable kit. You definitely can kill him on your own too if you are smarter than he is when it comes down to trading and baiting him out.If he's low just bait him into jumping for a cannon minion then E him and finish with combo abd Ultimate. He will hurt late game and during team fights.
Pantheon
Pantheon is going to cry after he realizes he is facing Urgot. You out-poke him with your Q. Out-trade him with your W as well. Go for shorter trades. You don't want him to unleash his full combo on you. Most Pantheons have Ignite so don't fight in the very early game. You will manage to keep him behind easy and at that point he becomes useless to his team.
Poppy
She gets tougher as the game goes on. You definitely out-poke her. Don't get caught by her Q. You should be able to deal with her passive damage. Beware of ganks because of her gankable kit and also make sure she doesn't have Predator (Rune) which almost every time guarantees an early gank.
Quinn
She becomes weaker as the game goes late. To make her useless try to out-poke her and stay behind your minions most of the time. If you bait out her blind you should be able to deal some real damage. If you get her with E after 6 this should lead to a kill. Make sure she falls behind and it's an easy game. She will ask for ganks because of the difficulty of facing Urgot so yeah, watch out for them. Overall it's easy. It's bad news for you and your team if she gets ahead which is possible thanks to her roaming ability.
Renekton
You bully this guy out of the lane. Don't fight him head on. Just poke, poke and poke. Once he doesn't have Teleport and can't afford to Recall watch out for that cannon minion play. As soon as it gets low- press you E to it. In the best case scenario is he isn't too afraid he will dash in with his E and will be caught. If you have R- attach it to him and press W. Wait out his second cast of E when he tries to dash away and then try to hit him with your Q to slow him. If you don't kill him (which you do in 99% percent of the time) you sure will damage him a lot! Make sure he doesn't farm and get ahead of you. Can't ask for an easier lane. But don't get ahead of yourself of course. A Renekton is a Renekton.
Riven
Standart poke and E bait into a cannon minion. Ult and you have no problems. Keep the trades short unless you're going for the kill. Cheesy Riven players will beg for ganks so beware of them.
Rumble
You totally out-poke Rumble. Stay behind minions to ignore his E. Don't get too close to avoid his Q. Chunk him down and end him. He will look for ganks thanks to his E slow and Ultimate. In Patch 8.13 he got more buffs tho. Don't get up close and personal or he might even get a kill on you. If he gets ahead, he most probably will stay ahead and will ruin your game.
Shaco
Poke, poke, poke. Have a Control Ward with you so if he goes invisible you counter that. Also get Oracle Lens earlier in the game to totally counter his W and Q stealth. If you catch him with E and attach R before he Ults - it's an easy kill. If he Ults after you do this combo- you will be able to tell the difference between the real and the fake one by checking out in which one your ultimate is. Super easy. Zone him out of farm and experience and you make him useless to his team late game.
Shen
Generally it's easy but.. I've found a Shredder Shen build based on magic damage. Be extremely careful and don't underestimate Shen. If he is going with that build he will have PTA(Press The Attack) as his rune.
Singed
Pain in the backside as always. Try to poke him and don't get close to him. Deny him farm and punish him. Do NOT let him get ahead of you. Don't chase for kills unless you're 110% sure you are killing him. Don't let him bypass you for free and proxy farm. You keep him under control and late game should be easier. Definitely get a MR(Magic Resistance) item earlier and 100% Mercury Threads.
Sion
Absurdly annoying. Try dodging his E poke even though it's hard. He will try to land a Q on you after he hit an E so take advantage of that and jump him with your E as he charges up Q. From then on you out-damage him. You also should out-poke him in lane. Deny him farm near to mid game and keep him behind.
Swain
He definitely out-damages Urgot. Go for short trades and poke. After your Black Cleaver buy Mercury Threads and a MR(Magic Resistance) item like Adaptive Helm. Mid game after he's used his E on you, you're completely free to all-in him and grab a kill or two. He's only stronger early and really late into the game. Avoid his Q and E as much as possible and return fire with a Q of your own.
Trundle
Keep in mind that he is an anti-tank champion. Poke him hard with Q and if he advances to trade with you by activating his W or E just Q to slow him and E away. Or if you think the fight will be favorable for you just E into him. But if he tries to advance onto you he is probably getting a gank so keep that it mind. Get him low and kill him after 6. Zone him out of farm and experience if possible.
Tryndamere
You should own him pre-6. Try to get level advantage. And poke. Keep him low. If he gets level 6 and advances on you with W and E try to slow him with Q and stall until he pops his Ultimate use E dash and W shield if need be and Ult him at the end to finish off. Mid-late game he will become a monster whether you like it or not. So don't fight long fights- keep it short and safe. If gets his hands on you for a couple of seconds he will end you easy.
Twisted Fate
You don't lane against a TF(Twisted Fate) but.. When you get low and you Recall on your tower and he Ults next to you just press W for shield and damage and E him right as he teleports in. Q him when he lands on the other side of your E and R if need be. It's too fun not to include in here ;) .
Urgot
It's all about skills and strategy. Better player wins. Or in other words the player who read more of this guide wins. :D .
Vladimir
Poke him hard. After 6 E him after you baited out his W pool and do the combo to finish him off. He will be rather difficult to deal with as the game goes on though. Try to end early.
Volibear
Make sure he doesn't have his passive when you fight him. Do so by abusing your Q to poke him. He will be looking for ganks so beware. After 6 when he hasn't passive you can allow yourself to go for longer trades with the E->R combo of course and finish him off.
Wukong
Oracle Lens is a must if you're planning to get some early kills on this guy. just poke and try not to trade with him. Bait out his W and possibly E and go in for the kill. Don't let him get ahead because it might be tricky to deal with him late game.
Yasuo
He's hard to poke thanks to his E dash every so often. Watch for low health minions of yours and try to predict how he is going to get them. That's when you poke. Do the cannon minion stunt to guarantee a kill too. Don't let him get ahead. And most importantly play safe (poke).
Yorick
A good Yorick player or Yorick main can hurt like 2 players. Poke with Q when he goes to last hit minions. Keep in mind that his Q range is larger than his aa (auto attack) range so he might use that against you so you miss some Q's. Try to dodge his E especially when his Q monsters are summoned. With his Ultimate he isn't only hard to kill but dangerous for you. Both players go kind of even in lane. Make sure you farm more than him and ask for a gank if he pushes the wave in or if need be. As a serious Yorick player I can tell you- Yorick isn't messing around, be extremely careful. Watch out for that Banner Of Command cannon minion as well. He will most likely drop it off and go elsewhere while it causes a lot of trouble. After all remember that Yorick's job is to split push and destroy towers. Use that knowledge to your advantage to predict his future moves and where he might be.

I've found the secret OP of top lane which is my favorite champion- Urgot. In this in-depth guide you will learn the basics of Urgot as well as some advanced techniques. Overall the champion isn't hard to learn, he's really fun to play (mostly thanks to his extremely satisfying Ultimate) and he can carry games. What more could one want from a champion. Keep in mind that all of the information on this guide is all by personal experience and survey. Feel free to correct me and ask questions and also vote so I see what you think of the guide after you've tried it. I will try to update this guide as soon as I find out something new and try out all new new things as the patches roll on. Thanks for the attention, lets get into the guide.
- OffWithYoHead
Currently I'm working on a couple other builds on Mobafire and also trying out new stuff for Urgot. It's kind of hard to keep track of it all but I'm doing my best. Don't forget if you have any questions, just pop them in the discussion tab.
Runes (First Build)
Runes (First Build)
Summon Aery is the best choice for Urgot simply because you cause a lot more damage with it long term than Arcane Comet. Also it procs a lot more helping you harass with your aa.
Nimbus Cloak is a new rune that works pretty good on Urgot. When you do the E->R combo or just attach an enemy champion with your R and they aren't under the health threshold you always seem to be a bit slower than your opponent, and end up wasting your Ultimate. Here Nimbus Cloak helps a lot because it lets you walk through the enemy wave with higher MS(Movement Speed) allowing you to catch up to the target. When you see it- it looks scary.
Manaflow Band is also a great choice if you trust yourself with following up on your ultimate. It will definitely make your life easier by giving you the opportunity to spam abilities more often.
You can go either Scorch or Gathering Storm although I always prefer Scorch . I take Gathering Storm only when I'm sure the game will go late just by looking at the team composition.
In the secondary tree firstly i take Sudden Impact . Your E counts as a dash and in most cases during the laning phase and out of it you are most likely going to activate your W after your E which gives you a lot of bonus damage.
Since in Patch 8.11 Ultimate Hat was removed, I suggest taking Ultimate Hunter from the Domination tree. It works just as good if not better. It lets you snowball greatly into the game. I tried Presence Of Mind to replace it but 10% CDR(Cooldown Reduction) didn't seem enough.
Laning and Combos
Laning and Combos
In most cases you take Cull as your first item which ultimately means you should focus on farming. But why Cull? It's a strange pick but it goes well with your W. Cull gives you 3 life on hit and with your W attack speed boost you regain quite some health during laning phase. Also last hitting minions as Urgot is pretty easy plus you can use your Q and W to help farming/pushing the wave. Additionally you get +1 gold for your first 100 minions farmed and 350 gold after completion. You also sell this item not long after finishing it's passive for 180 gold. All of that makes you easy 630 gold!
More laning tips are displayed higher at the matchup section of the guide. Now lets talk combos.
The easiest and lamest combo is Q->W. If you hit a unit with Q and then W in lane they will take quite some damage. But you risk being damaged a lot by the enemy minion wave. You Q the enemy before your W because your W focuses the latest enemy hit.
Next combo is Q->E->W. You slow the enemy and E on them while they are slowed. Then you pop your W shield and attack speed and walk around them. A basic combo.
Another combo is E->W->Q. Here you grab a minion thirsty enemy out of nowhere and pop W when they land behind you. As they are stunned for a brief moment pop a Q on the ground to slow them. This cheesy combo is mostly used when you poke the enemy to low health but they greed for a cannon minion. If they are melee, pop E right before the minion dies. 78% of the times you catch the enemy top laner. Finish the combo for a great deal of damage or even a kill.
Last combo is E->R->W->Q. Just like the last combo but you add in your Ultimate. Of course you can fire it as a skillshot which is always fun but if you want to guarantee that your Ultimate hits you first must catch the enemy and as they are stunned after your E you attach your Ultimate right next to them. Then you maul them with your W and Q as they get low enough for you to finish them off. Satisfying as always and it works.
Items
Items
The Black Cleaver - In most cases your first major item. You build this item always unless you are getting hardly abused in lane to a point where you find it hard to farm or being camped by the enemy jungler.
Ninja Tabi - Buy these boots if the enemy team is mainly going to be doing Physical Damage . That means - all 5 enemies build AD. Champions that don't build AD or AP (tanks like Maokai) would require these boots too. If the enemy team has Mages or any kind of heavy CC (Crowd Control) champions don't consider buying Ninja Tabi .
Mercury Treads - Buy these boots if the enemy team has either heavy CC (Crowd Control) or AP reliant Mages (like Brand, Malzahar, Syndra, Ryze) . If the enemy team lacks heavy CC or their AP reliant Mage is behind to a point where there is a little chance they are coming back strong in the game ( 1/6 Score) then you may want to build Ninja Tabi . If there are two AP champions though, always build Mercury Treads .
Righteous Glory - If you are winning the laning phase and already have The Black Cleaver , with the enemy Mage (if there is one) not being fed then you could buy this item. It gives you Health and Health Regeneration, more Mana sustain, some Armor and 10% CDR (Cooldown Reduction). Plus it's Active allows you to be extra offensive in and out of lane.
Adaptive Helm - If the enemy team has 1 or more Mages that deal Magic Damage, sooner or later you will need to buy yourself this item. The only requirement is that your team doesn't have a Healer like Soraka . If it does and you are looking for MR (Magic Resistance) then you should check:
Spirit Visage - If you are in need for MR (Magic Resistance) and you DO have a healer on your team, Spirit Visage is the item you are looking for. If your team doesn't have a Healer though you should buy the item above.
Thornmail - Grants you lots of Armor and some Health . Good choice against melee champions like Yasuo, Fiora and such.
Warmog's Armor - Could be bought as last item when you are the only tank on the team and you need to survive and stay full health for longer periods of time. I personally don't buy it often but sometimes it's a lifesaver and game winner.
Abyssal Mask - The only time you will have to buy this item is when the enemy team is either all AP or has 3 or more really fed Mages . You buy this item always after the Spirit Visage and Adaptive Helm .
Randuin's Omen - Another good choice when you need Armor . It reduces Critical Strikes by 20% and his Active helps you chase down enemies. It combines well with Righteous Glory .
Sunfire Cape - Another good choice when you need Armor . Buy it when the enemy team goes all AD but never before Thornmail and Randuin's Omen . I almost never get to buy this item but you never know.
Oracle Lens - At least one player on your team must have this item after level 9 or 10. If the support hasn't got it for some reason then you should get it. Even if they got it sometimes it would be a good idea to grab it as well just so you can control the map better.
Runes (Second Build)
Runes (Second Build)
Unsealed Spellbook has been gaining popularity on Urgot and for a reason. Pretty much to use it, you have to Teleport back to lane after the 6 minute mark and poke down your opponent a bit. Then swap out the Teleport which is on cooldown to let's say- Ignite . This would help you burst down the enemy and in almost every case, get a kill. Or you could swap it out for Exhaust if your jungler is calling for a gank. You can take Heal if you are versus another Urgot and you both have ults, it would help you ult him first. Ghost is another good option whether you need to chase someone down or if you see a fast enemy jungler like Warwick or Nunu & Willump speeding towards you on the map in order to escape.
Magical Footwear - Helps you out with 300g and since you don't need the other two options on this page, it's the only choice.
Biscuit Delivery a perfect choice for both sustain and aggressive behavior.
Time Warp Tonic - Since in this build you have a Corrupting Potion and Biscuit Delivery it only makes sense to take this rune. It's in great help. It doesn't only make all of your potions and biscuits stronger but it also gives you 5% Movement Speed.
Bone Plating - Makes you tankier and helps you in lane.
Chrysalis - Gives you extra 50HP early which gives you space to fill up with your potions so to say. After you get some kills and assists it will give you much needed AD.
Conditioning - If you wanna be a baby tank, you can take some extra MR and Armor but i don't recommend it for often use.
