Warwick is not only a strong meta pick, he is an unexpected meta pick for season 4. Currently, popular top laners are tankier, sustain well, and have decent initiation. Not to mention a lot of them deal percentage health damage. Warwick brings all of these to the table and is often underestimated. I have used Warwick to help get through gold to reach platinum. He is simple to play, advanced mechanics are pretty quickly understood, and he generally isnt banned.

Yes, this build does not incorporate BOTRK. Why do I do this? well lets first talk about why people build BOTRK on Warwick: life steal, attack speed, chasing potential, and some extra damage. All of that is nice but here is the deal; Warwick is always a decent dueling champion and while BOTRK helps this particular play style of dueling and splitting it isnt as beneficial as Warwick could be as a tanky, initiating, objective controller.

If you think about it like this: in lane Warwick already has sustain and an AS buff and a good chasing kit. So all of that aside is it better to leap onto the carry and shred their magic resist with wits end and abyssal or to jump on them and heal for a bit more. If that doesnt persuade you then maybe this will. Abyssal, wits end, and sunfire together will shred an oppoenents MR by nearly 50 and then deal about an additional 410 magic damage (before defenses) while ulting them. SO for dueling purposes it lends to a diverse kit that is hard to itemize against. For team fights this should be obvious enough, dive in and shred MR is more important and changes fights significantly more so than what BOTRK provides.
