This may not be a good choice, but Rod of Ages consist of two Items Catalyst the Protector and Blasting Wand.
AP is totally NOT needed on Malphite, BUT Catalyst the Protector adds some great lanestaying power. It solves your mana problem quite neatly and also heals you, which basically suffice to compensate the harrasment you´ll get.
So why don´t buy Catalyst the Protector for the lane and mid-late game build it to Banshee's Veil.?

Glacial Shroud-> Frozen Heart
Catalyst the Protector-> Banshee's Veil
9/9/12, 9/0/21(EDIT) and 0/9/21 masteries. DISCUSS!
Bad/meh solutions:
Clarity
Catalyst the Protector-> Rod of Ages
Mana-reg seals/glyphs. Not sure, but I think they're prolly kinda meh. GOGO discuss!

As Malphite is a Tank, I would build him as one.

Also: I´m a personal fan of armor/mr per level. This allows me to delay my core build to buy, let's say a Chalice of Harmony and still be tanky enough mid-late game.

Neo, the thing is that it's a much better idea to use utility for mana and runes for armor, MR and HP. It's just much more effective.
Utility masteries are the most used masteries at high level play because they simply are better in most cases. When you need other masteries to survive the jungle or something like that is the only reason not to get utility masteries.
On Amumu for example; I run 1/12/17. I go as far as I can into utility while grabbing the most essential masteries in defense.

Well, yes. I can understand that. I´m a fan of the utility mastery too. The only three thing I really like in defense are Hardiness, Resistance and Tenacity (also I'd like Riot to rename it as Tenacity is already a CC-Reduce factor ingame). The thing is, I like Tenacity really really really (repeat for unlimit profit) much.
The thing is, I don't really have those mana issues due to my playstyle.
Sometimes I wish for just 20 more mana to just land another Seismic Shard to finish him, but this happens VERY VERY rarely. Also I´d like to give my lane partner the kills, as don´t need them as much as carrys do.

And frozen gives you nice mana, nice CDR, nice armor (which also converts to W damage), AND an AMAZING aura, for under 3k g.
Anyways, you can just buy Glacial Shroud early game, and finish it later too if you want, still gives nice CDR, armor, and mana.
