Why should I define race? The idea of human races isn't needed imo

human race is not an 'idea' it is a FACT that has been proven by science.

not everyones dna is the same, there are millions of different ways your dna and someone elses can differ, but when you have a group of people who have quite a few similarities in certain parts of their dna, then you have a race.

dogs are a great example of how race works, as there are several different races of dogs. though dog races exist more or less because of human interaction (breeding dogs with similar features to create a new race) they come in many shapes and sizes, and differ in several other regards such as strength, dexterity, or *gasp* even intelligence, just like human beings.

as for nationalism, nationalism is 'a belief, creed, or political ideology that involves one identifying with, or becoming attached to, ones country'. there is nothing inherently wrong with nationalism.

yes, my ancestors did things that were bad, too. but what does that matter? everyone's ancestors did something at one point that you do not agree with, so why do you need to point that out because my ancestors are white?

and since someone asked, my family ancestry can be roughly traced back to 15th century switzerland, eventually moving to germany in the 17th century before finally moving to pennsylvania in 1737, where most of them remain today, though my grandparents moved away from pennsylvania we still live in the usa. we even have a crest, which is pretty cool.

I can agree with this. I watch it every week when it comes on TV on the channel CBS.

The idea of human races is used to create the idea of racism for most parts. People may have a similar DNA based on where they're living because it's part of the evolution that human beings are trying to fit in with their environment. If you would start living in Africa the next generations of your family will probably experience changes in their DNA for instance concerning additive polygenetic (skin colour).

Wait what? As you said dogs have been influenced by humans that much that the example doesn't matter.

As Ichi has said -ism is mostly regarded to something extreme. I'd rather talk about things like "national identity" which can be healthy :D

Remember the story of Darwin and the three islands? The same could be said about the human race. For many years the continents have been separated, just like the birds of the islands were separated. It's easily proven by, as you said, skin color. Humans need sunlight to produce some good stuff, but too much sunlight is unhealthy. Pigment keeps sunlight out. For different continents (or smaller bits of isolated people) there are different optima. The people whose amount of pigment is relatively close to the optimum for the amount of sunlight in the continent they live will survive better and thus be able to reproduce more. This leads to the DNA that stands for this amount of pigment to show up more in the next generation than other amounts (because the people with these amounts reproduced less). We could call a group of people that have been isolated for a very, very long time (lots of generations) and have only been reproducing with themselves a race. I propose that we, for this discussion, define race as that.

NB: Things like intelligence do not differ between these groups of people, because they are all humans and all the groups share the same optimum: being the smartest *** around. In all groups the same deviations were present and the smartest ***es were able to survive better and reproduce more. This is why I define the term racism as discrimination based on one's race while this is irrelevant to the case at hand. Like in the case of apartheid.

As an aside, these days even all continents are connected and people move between continents, so all humans are slowly becoming one big race.

To add up to what Latest said:

"Human genetic variation is the genetic differences both within and among populations. There may be multiple variants of any given gene in the human population (genes), leading to polymorphism. Many genes are not polymorphic, meaning that only a single allele is present in the population: the gene is then said to be fixed. On average, biochemically all humans are 99.9% similar to any other humans."

Never pointed out something like that or accused your ancestors for anything. I was just saying that you should also recognise your nation's mistakes(which I think you do) and the accomplishments of other nations(to which aspect you did not refer).

yes, asian, middle eastern, and native american (both north and south) cultures have all had amazing advances in science and technology. even while some of those (the aztecs for example) were behind the technological curve, they still had built amazing monuments and wonders, and some technology that still to this day we do not understand.

africans, and to an extent the pacific islanders, never did any of these things.

and before you try to reply with 'but egypt' ancient egypt, and still modern egypt, are of middle eastern descent.

Africans do not have the ability to do things. The abundance of Malaria in the last century has been a huge disadvantage to their ability to develop their infrastructure or economy.
