Glacial shroud says hi.

Mana and resistances = better sustain.

Catalyst doesn't really make you tanky. You're not taking advantage of your ult's bonus HP by just adding more HP.

You take advantage if your ult with resistances.

And that is why you build Warmog's Armor, right?^^

You loose 450 HP, and that is very much HP if you don't buy any HP item.

HP doesn't gain or lose value when you have less or more of it, it only gains/loses value relative to your armour/MR.

Dying would cost you equally as much on any Cho build.

3259 health (with max feast stacks), 259 armor, 211 MR (with wit's end stacked)

How is that not tanky enough lol.

You're trying to make me look stupid buy you faaaail. :P

I'm talking about laning phase with my post which is discussing the merit of catalyst (Not the greatest Cho item.)

You're discussing over all builds.

You might notice I build resistances first in my build order suggestions and then compliment those resistances with more HP and then again later with more Resistances.

Your build would be better almost all games with Warmogg's in place of the Atma's regardless... :P

Why? You're more than tanky enough. You don't need Warmog's at all. All the extra health is completely wasted, might as well get an offensive item instead.

Welllll you go on and think that lol.

Why buy any defense at all?

As long as you don't get focused then who cares amari?

I mean if you got some tankiness then it's no big deal right?

While we're at it, don't bother with the Frozen heart, just build RoA.

In fact, don't build any resistances at all.

Just build full on AP while you're at it cause burst is so gud, and since we don't need to be tankier it's no big deal.

TL;DR (There is no point at which you become tanky enough. You always need more HP as a main-tank champion. 4k is essentially the minimum.)

What I mean is, with stats like that, even IF you get focused you're not gonna die.

That's why Cho'Gath is so good, you already have plenty of health from your Feast stacks. You get some much needed armor and MR with Frozen Heart and Force of Nature and from there you can build offensive items to be more disruptive.

Buying catalyst for sustain is an error.

Right.. That's why any good player will disagree with you on that..

I only go into 21 Defensive if i plan on getting the Tenacity boots, which is quite often. id say for offtanks with physical damage, 10% armor penetration + ArP runes are enough to deal good damage, Enlightenment mastery, which has 8.1% CDR at lvl 18 is HUGE, since most offtanks are bruisers who excel in burst damage with single spells (or by using spells then auto attk with Tri Force).

10% CCR is too good to ignore for champs with Tenacity Boots and, even better, with champs with innate ability to increase CCR even further like Irelia, Trundle, Singed, Mundo, etc. or BECAUSE these champs have innate ability to increase CCR, there may not be any reason for you to focus into Defensive trees... suit yourself.

BUT! if your champ has an awesome early game sustain and NOT AS item dependent to become tanky, you might as well try to benefit from Offensive masteries.... here is a list of such champs in my view

Cho Gath: with Carnivore passive and Feast stacks that will make you extremely tanky with appropriate item builds even at earlier games? plus that, lets not forget Cho has 2 HARD CC spells that will cause extreme chaos

Garen: who has an annoying "i am down to 200 HP but i run around for 20 seconds and i become full health again" passive, 3 seconds shield that gives garen 24~30% damage reduction which makes garen such a good initiate? and lets not forget his strong Burst damage tha also Silence for a full 2.5 seconds at any level

Gangplank: he eats oranges and everything is k... but i have to say he is a more item dependent than the top two, indeed.

Nocturne: a Spell Shield, Fear, some weird-*** projectile that empowers himself while stepping on it, passive that provides good sustain... and it gets even worse... with an ult that completely ignores positioning and fly straight to the dam carry.

i'd say that is quite alot who can benefit from offensive tree than defensive.

any other suggestions?
