League of Legends (LoL) Question: When to take double-edged sword?

    When to take double-edged sword?

When would you take Double-Edged Sword ?
It's obviously meant for Champions that are supposed to deal lots of damage and receive only litte damage. Easy choice if you're going to build a glass canon...
But what's with champions that both deal and soak damage at the same time?
When playing Galio or Amumu full tank with just a litte bit AP I often end up with much more total damage dealt than taken in the end game stats. Doesn't that mean Double-Edged Sword would have been beneficial?

On some melee carries - Yes.

On ranged champions - No, not really.

Explanation why not on ranged champions: The rate of the damage dealt and damage received is 1:1 but there can be two enemies attacking you with minions while you are the only one attacking the enemy. Therefore it is usually just a con.

EDIT: In addition, there are usually just better masteries available.

Mages, no. Tanks, no. Melee fighters, yes. If you plan on being tanky, but also having some damage, it's good. Also, it's important that you're melee. This is all my personal preference, but you asked. :)

It's all based on your playstyle and champion pool. If your ambitions within a game are to be dealing as much damage as possible then Double-Edged Sword is a decent mastery. It doesn't really matter as much as you think, as long as you have a decent runepage/mastery setup it really doesn't matter since having one mastery doesn't generally result in a different outcome from a duel with the exception of Dangerous Game . It's your choice at the end of the game, if you want to take it on a tank then it's your choice but it all boils down to fulfilling your role in the game and succeeding rather than having a particular mastery.
