While DPS does stand for Damage Per Second, it's usually not about short time spans, but rather larger ones.

We say that a burst mage like Lux has *low* DPS: she can deal a lot of damage at once, but then she has to wait out her cooldowns while doing little damage. So, overall, she does not deal a lot of damage over a longer period. A marksman like Vayne, on the other hand, has *high* DPS: she consistently deals damage through her auto attacks without having to wait out cooldowns.

Another example of a high DPS champion is Cassiopeia: she can continuously spam her Twin Fang because of the low cooldown.

Generally speaking, all ADC marksmen are considered to be high DPS champions. They are the ones dealing the most damage in most games for that reason, and it's also why it's important to keep them alive in team fights: they will consistently whittle down the enemy. Assassins and burst mages on the other hand, have low DPS. They use their combo once, and after that they're pretty useless until their abilities get back up.

useless is a rude word, they can do 64-70 damage and without skills, so not really useless. But i get what u wanted to say.

To add, burst mages or assassins might have a lower DPS than ADCs, but that does not mean they have less of an impact on a game. Burst damage can often kill enemies much easier than DPS can, just that after their burst has been used they have to wait. This is the reason why ADCs are considered more important to defend than burst champions, because their damage source is more reliable.

Outside of League context and moreso (MMO)RPG context DPS is most often referred to as a measurement of damage. The fights in those kind of games usually take much longer, which is why their DPS is considered the most important stat for damage dealers. This is not the case for League and other MOBA's since people can die much faster here.

Not really sure why this gets downvoted, pretty sure this is accurate. Let me back it up a little with a source: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/League_of_Legends_terminology#DPS

DPS stands for "damage per second." It's a term used to determine the amount of damage can be dealt in a second. Additionally, the damage could, and should, be consistent. Low DPS means the character or player has low consistent damage, and high DPS is the opposite. Hope this helps!

It stands for damage per second. Players use this as a metric to see how much damage they can deal in a short period of time. High DPS means doing a lot of damage very quickly

It's not really about how fast you do the damage, it is about how much consistent damage you are dealing. For example high DPS means you are constantly dishing out damage or doing enough to make it seem that way. Where as low DPS can be something like burst where you have a lot of quick damage, but over time your average DPS is low compared to lets say an adc.

Sure people can say "hey I do 1000 dmg per second" because they did 1000 dmg in 1 second, but that's not proper way to look at DPS. You should be looking at how much dmg a second you can dish out over course of a minute for a more realistic average.
