Itemization
So basically I wanted to cover warding, but I wanted to cover GP10's and sightstones because the sighstone is a key element in warding. Thats why I'm going to explain some itemization first :)
Sightstone vs Gp10
Let's start with a comparison in the amount of gold returned on your investment. The

This makes sightstone the most beneficial item to rush, especially when you consider that health is the best defensive stat in the early game. Because a kage's lucky pick only gives 4 gp/10, bringing it at 24 gold per minute while being more expensive than a philo stone, this item is a NOT BUY.
I only go for philo stone against poke lanes, but only after having the sightstone in place - this is because against poke lanes you will not need the defensive stats against all-out damage, in fear of your own life, but rather stats that make the laning less painful (health regen and optionally the mana regen to keep spamming heals)
Because of the gold efficiency, I usually tend to grab sightstone but not immediately build it into a ruby sightstone, because this is a rather expensive item, and offers only one extra ward - the extra ward is 25 gold per minute which means the extra expense of 600 gold will be earned back in 24 extra minutes - in fact making it the least gold-efficient item to rush overall!
Another really great early game (Get it at your first or second back) item would be the

That is why I usually find myself rushing

Basically, the golden rule for support itemization, is gold efficiency: If the item is not gold-efficient, you should not be building it. Bulwark is generally really expensive (however, it is a really great item and a must-have against 2+ ap teams) and therefore it should preferably be built by your jungler instead of you - you should never be rushing this yourself anyway.
The best boots to get for a support usually depend on the type of support: tanky supports are best off with

So, a good example of a build path would be:
Start: 4 green wards, 1 pink ward, 2 potions - optionally leave out 1 green ward for some potions
First buy: some (pink-) wards, ruby crystal
Second:

Optionally: philosopher's stone (only when not playing against an aggressive kill-lane and when really making use of the hp and mana regen
Then rush:

Finish

*you should start considering buying oracle around this point*
Next item optionals:

I'd say that getting boots really depens on yur champ, masteries and playstile. While playing Janna and using the speed masteries, you barely need boots. On Sona you might consider rushing mana regen. Usually you'll get away then too- though a lot more tricky to get away then with Janna.
As long as you run around with your team, you migh do well with tier 1 boots. I usually upgrade them rather late. When you see the enemy team roaming a lot and you're really scared of getting caught while warding, upgraded boots are quite nice.
your* playstyle* than* might*
The thing is, a support should be with their team at 95% of the time. You should also never be warding without any cover/vision. If you are, the enemy will never go for you because you're not their optional target. If they do, you'll be able to turn around a fight
optimal* you mean

(As for boots, I actually only need to buy tier 1 boots, if I buy boots at all;
And yeah, mobi boots are my standard as well (even though I get them after finishing core items) -> ninja tabi is good as someone like leona/thresh/blitz against a fed AD though
Locket is indeed one of the strongest items to rush on a support due to its stats. I heavily dislike building aegis/bulwark on supports. The stats themselves aren't good enough for a support and there's no utility in it.
happened so many times in ranked 5s that we went to ward with several peeps and since I was just slow as **** and a mobi boots jungler was running towards us like crazy I got caught,
you can't afford to stay with BoS for too long.
And you can also not afford to not ward certain areas.
And mid-lategame the target really doesnt matter all that much, if they get a catch it's a kill, unless they blow up ults for you it doesnt matter at all.
.. and now don't gimme:"well then you were out of position"
.......................
Anyway, I dont think that a support should be in a position on their own so they shouldnt get caught that much in the first place.
and you can't do **** about it, e.g. lulu with BoS vs naut with mobi boots, no warding will help you if he sees you are on your way warding.
.. and now don't gimme:"well then you were out of position"
other than that you don't mention
Besides that a good read ;)
