Hello and welcome to the MOBAFire Patch Summary - 5.24!

Today marks the release of the last patch of 2015, one final set of changes to round up a year of balance adjustments aimed at improving the experience of players who set foot on Summoner's Rift. Patch 5.24 contains a large amount of champion changes, of which none are more important than the rework of Poppy, who has received (mostly) new abilities and a new splash art for all of her skins.

In this post, we will review her new kit before discussing changes made to other champions, items and masteries and taking a look at some upcoming skins. Let's go!

! = Rework / Gameplay Update* = Mostly bugfix(es) and/or display changes+ = Buff- = Nerf~ = Mixed

The two highlights of this patch are the Poppy rework, and the long-sought after Soraka nerf.

Poppy has received a total kit rework, with the only element of it that has remained the same (outside of tweaked numbers) being her Heroic Charge. In lane, her new passive ( Iron Ambassador) will periodically allow her to trade with her opponent while shielded after she last hits a minion, while the ability to stop opponents near her from dashing with Steadfast Presence will keep them in range for her Hammer Shock to apply damage twice. In teamfights, the passive of her W gives her the tankiness to dive into the enemy backline and attempt to pin down squishy enemy carries, while her new ultimate can be used to displace any opponents who try to stand in her way while doing so.

If you want to familiarize yourself with her new kit, make sure to check out the full details by mousing over the ability icons below or by checking out the Poppy Champion Spotlight.

Moving on to other champions, the biggest set of changes to talk about is the nerf to Soraka, with the range of Starcall being lowered (950 ⇒ 800) and the mana cost of her Astral Infusion going up (20/25/30/35/40 ⇒ 40/45/50/55/60). These changes reduce Soraka's capability to heal her teammates and increase her vulnerability when harassing with Starcall in lane and during teamfights, leaving more room for counterplay.

As the table above shows, she is definitely not the only champion to receive changes this patch, however; should any of the specific champions interest you, make sure to click on their names for the full details.

Item & Mastery Changes

In addition to champion changes, there are also a bunch of updates to items and masteries; some of the most significant ones are listed below.

Starting with items, one item that has long been the go-to choice for bruisers and tanks looking to increase both their health and armor has been Dead Man's Plate. To combat its effectiveness, Riot has now reduced the health gained from the item to 500 (from 600).

Essence Reaver has also changed, and its passive will now grant champions 20% CDR upon attaining 30% critical strike chance from other sources (up from 20%). In other words, the rate at which critical strike chance from other items influences the CDR gained by the item's passive has been altered; reaching the old "cap" of 20% critical strike chance will now grant only 10% CDR.

On the vision side of things, the Farsight Alteration has received a longer cooldown (61 - 48 seconds (at levels 9-18) ⇒ 90 - 60 seconds (at levels 9-18)) while the wards placed by it now have a smaller vision radius (900 ⇒ 500).

Let's move on to masteries. If you haven't noticed the unfamiliar icon on the right already, a new mastery has been added to the Cunning tree! It is called Assassin, and it increases the damage that you deal to opponents by 1.5% when none of your allies are nearby. This addition, along with nerfs to other masteries, should encourage a more offensive, all-in type playstyle.

One of those nerfed masteries is the keystone mastery Fervor of Battle , which has been changed to interact with champions exclusively. Stacks are now only obtained upon hitting an enemy champion with an ability (grants 2 stacks, 2 second CD) or auto attacking them (melee autos give 2 stacks, ranged 1).

Another keystone mastery that has been altered is Bond of Stone , which now grants 3% damage reduction while alone (up from 2), 6% damage reduction when near an ally (down from 8) and doesn't stop transferring damage taken by allies to you until you're at only 5% of your maximum Health (down from 15).

Upcoming Skins

With Snowdown upon us, all three skins which will be released this patch are snow-themed. Two of these skins will become Legacy skins after the event ends, while Snow Day Bard will remain available throughout the year. Note that all three of these skins are not purchasable yet; they will become available within the next couple of days.

Share Your Thoughts!

That wraps up our final patch summary of the year. For all changes we didn't get to discuss, remember to check out the full patch notes (link in the introduction)!

For now, however, it is time for one final discussion. What are your thoughts on the changes to Soraka, will she remain banworthy? Which other champion changes do you feel will have the biggest impact on the game, and which are still missing? How much will the addition of the Assassin mastery influence the popularity of - you got it - assassins? Finally, will you be picking up any of the Snowdown skins?

But at least they got to the crux of the matter: Karthus and Malzahar nerfs.

Well it's pretty clear that this isn't the pre-seasons of AP mids, thanks Riot...

I just do not know where these random nerfs come from. Last patch we had a damage buff to Zed's ultimate, because yes, that has always been his prime issue; he doesn't deal enough damage. Now we got Anivia, Malzahar, Karthus, and Twisted Fate nerfs, all for no real reason.
