Hello and welcome to the MOBAFire Patch Summary - 7.3!

The champion balance changes in this patch are targeted at the current state of competitive play. Nerfs to some of the most prolific picks in professional play should freshen up the draft phase and hopefully result in more champion diversity.

This patch also includes the new Hunt of the Blood Moon game mode, which will be featured from February 10-14 and 17-21. Sacrifice Spirits, Demon Heralds, and enemy champions to gain points and the Demon Brand buff, which turns you invisible to hunt down your enemies.

Only 20 of the most vicious champions are available for the Hunt (10 of which will be lurking in the Free to Play rotation).

Check out the full patch notes for details on any changes that interest you.

As you can see above, there are a ton of nerfs in this patch, largely towards the champions that are picked or banned in almost every professional game. Camille and Jayce received some of the more sweeping nerfs, with all of Camille's basic abilities getting number tweaks, as well as a change to Hextech Ultimatum that will force it to dissipate if Camille dies. Jayce's nerfs were targeted at his Hammer form, with To The Skies! losing some base damage and Mercury Hammer losing some AD scaling. Thundering Blow also received an increased mana cost to put pressure on Jayce's mana pool if he's forced to use it repeatedly to disengage.

Ivern's Daisy! lost her out-of-combat health regeneration and her base resistances are markedly lower. Numbers hits to Kha'Zix's Taste Their Fear and LeBlanc's Sigil of Malice should reduce their ability to create and expand on early game leads. Rengar's nerfs didn't hit his damage, but rather Savagery's dash distance, Empowered Battle Roar's CC immunity and Thrill of the Hunt's camouflage duration.

There are a couple buffs in this patch though. Tristana's Rapid Fire duration was increased from 5 to 7 seconds, giving her a longer period to quickly dish out damage before her DPS slows down. Vladimir also received some buffs to his basic attack damage and projectile speed, as well as some tuning on Transfusion to make it more consistent even if you can't land the Crimson Rush empowered Q. These changes are meant to make him more reliable in the average player's hands without making him too strong for competitive play.

Notable Changes & Fixes

  • Client Updates

    • Practice Tool will be rolling out region-by-region on the updated client later during patch 7.3! In the meantime, you can learn more about the Practice Tool here.

    • Hovering over a player in the scoreboard now shows the name of their skin.

    • Animated banners added to game lobbies.

    • You can now right-click on others' names on the end of game screen to add them as a friend, block them, or view their profile.

    • The "NEWS" tab is now live in the updated client. This will act as a hub for players to catch up on the latest League news, community creations, and miserably long roundtable videos from within the client.

  • Fixes

    • Fixed a bug preventing champ select chat from automatically scrolling down as new messages arrived.

    • Fixed a bug where pasting a really long URL into chat extended the chat window over the friends list.

    • Fixed a bug causing the main window to highlight in the task bar instead of the chat window when you received a message in pop out chat.

    • We made some various changes to the chat message window to make it easier to read, including adding a gradient behind active messages and adding summoner icons beside your friends' names.

    • Last patch we began allowing your conversation with your friends to follow you from the lobby into champ select (and back out if someone dodged). This message history is visible only to your party (not to new players that join in champ select). This isn't a bug—we just don't want you to lose track of your conversation.

    • Improvements have been made that should allow streamers to use the windowed capture mode in popular streaming software.

    • We've added the ability to manually toggle the video quality for recording Highlights from your Replays. Before you start a video recording, you can alter video and audio quality, vertical resolution and frame rate via the Video tab in the Options menu.

Is there a reason why they are mostly nerfing champs and not buff some champs that are underperforming? That looks really odd

My understanding in 7.1 and 7.2 they had other things on their agenda outside of primarily champion balance. In comes 7.3 where they decided to do a heap of needed champion balance changes. My guess is we'll see a few more champion balance changes in 7.4 or 7.5 as they figure out who is abusing the lethality changes (either that or they'll target the items. likely a bit of both).

Yeah, i also heard they want to adress lethality abuser, but this also sounds like another round of nerfs rather than buffs

You can't just buff champions underperforming because that leads to power creep (google it if you don't know what it is, it's kinda long to explain). Sometimes you have to nerf those with too much power.

An evidence of power creep, IMO, is the fact that they're thinking of hitting a lot of damage increasing masteries next patch. This means that the constant increase in some mastery effects probably went overboard in some contexts and they want to back it down a bit.

But yeah there's no point constantly buffing underperformers because that'll lead to more and more increased power and eventually all will need to be pulled back. It's best to aim for a balance (which is ultimately impossible to reach as there'll always be FotM strong picks and champs that aren't meta)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against nerfing these champions. I just have the feeling, that they are currently 90% concerned with nerfing. But we will see, they said they have some reworks planned, maybe they dont want to buff champs like aatrox because they want to wait for the rework to come out.

Aatrox will get a small mini-rework this year. Balance changes can't fix him. Riot only buffs those in need of reworks when they're way too weak and they can be sure they'll still stay out of the top tier (e.g. when they added mana scaling to Urgot's W shield).

And they are 90% nerfing, but they have different reasons to nerf different stuff. They have stated power creep as their reason for some mastery tree changes in PBE right now, and jungle plants and lethality buffs have also crept up the power of a bunch of champions way too much (plus some of the reworked assassins ended up being overtuned).

All in all, even though you might be seeing just nerfs, it's mostly about retuning previous buffs.
