actually I was wondering about this the other day. manamune is a pretty ****py item overall. It's just a necessary evil for some AD champs with a ****py mana pool.
Not exactly. It's a good item on those champs because it gives them unlimited mana AND makes them stronger. Normally you can get, say, a BF Sword and a Pickaxe on Ashe for roughly 2500 gold because she concentrates on last hitting with autoattacks and only occasionally pokes with Volley or uses her arrow.
Urgot or Corki, on the other hand, are INCREDIBLY skill dependent and not only are aided GREATLY by that extra mana, but also gain extra AD on top of it equating to roughly a BF sword in mid-game for about 35% more gold. Not to mention that Tear gives them a lot of lane sustainability early on so they can farm better and play more aggressively.
Overall you could achieve the same results on Urgot or Corki by getting a standard mana sustain item, like Catalyst or leaving it as an unfinished Tear - but the fact that Manamune gives you AD which DOES help you instead of not giving any added benefits makes the item icing on the cake for Urgot/Corki.

Actually...
Archangel's Staff's pool is unique. It's the AP-Mana% ratio that's stackable.
If you stack AAs, you won't get more then the initial 450 mana from the 2nd AA. Only the first passive mana-pool applies.
Manamune has a unique AD-Mana^ ratio passive. EDIT: It seems the mana-pool is not passive however.
This means you CAN gain 5000+ mana by stacking Manamunes, but this would be irrelevant, because only the first manamune's 2% AD ratio would apply.
Personally, I think Manamune should have it's mana-pool reduced, but have the AD-ratio increased as well as made stackable.
I want to be able to stack Manamunes for the luls.

@Jebus McAzn:
Well, that doesn't change my point.
Stacking Manamunes when the AD-Mana% Ratio is unique is quite the waste.
As for the Passive being unique but not unique on the site. Fix it, Jebus!

The mana is not only unique, I think it's globally unique. If you stack manamune up to 1000 and then buy AA staff you can't stack up any more.

Manamune, AA, and Tear are a set of super-unique items whose "pool" passives don't stack with each other. Other "super-unique" items, I believe, are Wriggle's Lantern+Madred's Razors and Sheen/Triforce/Lich Bane.
Although it would be awesome if they could stack... 3000 extra mana with those mana items, around a 3% chance to proc for 1000 damage on a minion and a 29% chance to proc the 500 damage, or just MASSIVE ****ING SHEEN PROCS

Sheen/Triforce proc for 220% of your AD on Tryn. Kgo!

My old Heimer build was 4 Archangels, Rabadon's and Boots of Swiftness.
The way to get the most AP possible out of items is 5 Archangels, Rabadon's and Elixir of Brilliance.
As far as being viable, well, the price adds up very quickly and you also have to worry about MPen and defence, so I would only suggest getting 2 or 3.
