Question about Doran's stacking

I usually see it when they have a hard time in their lane, but I rarely see high elo streamers actually get doran's shield, just wondering if it was possible to emulate the same thing. For the early resistances business, would it make more sense to buy a chain mail and pots than 2 doran's shields when you come back? From what I gathered it was better to build HP first and then resistances than the other way around, or is that a wrong view?[/quote]
