I would say you should -only- use Galio in the solo lane personally... o_O

... And Frozen heart is in no way shape or form counter productive to your ult... Slowing nearby champions attacks as a tank is what you always want to be doing.

Frozen heart is a vastly superior choice to Thornmail.

Fail :P

Your damage increases based on the amount of hits you take. Less AS=less hits=less damage.
I'm a strong independent black mage who don't need no mana.

As a single item yes, but your Ultimate synergizes with Thornmail much better than with Frozen Heart.
Tri lane for life.

I've been playing tons of galio in ranked. I've hammered out a pretty decent build order. Unlike most, my build is pretty much FULL TANK which means not a huge amount of damage but you are going to do enough to squishies, as well as be unkillable. Also with caster runes you are going to be very close to hitting 40% cdr, and you'll get there with a spirit visage.

start with:
Null-Magic Mantle OR Sapphire Crystal with health pots.

build order:
catalyst the protector Boots
Heart of Gold
Glacial ShroudOR Negatron Cloak(both will be built eventually. This is dependent on who you are laning against.)
Mercury's Treads
Force of Nature
Frozen Heart
Banshee's Veil
Randuin's Omen
Rabadon's Deathcap/ Spirit Visage/ Guardian Angel

Thanks to Anal Samurai for the sig!

No one is going to sit in your full duration ult. If they have mercs, they get 0.7 sec off the 2 sec taunt. If they have someone with a ranged stun (or someone with an autoswing stun or silence, like Blitz, Leona, or Garen) they will likely stop your ult, just as a good team will save a stun to stop Katarina's ult. It's funny to get a 1200 dmg ult off, but it's extremely rare.

Frozen Heart will benefit your team MUCH more than Thornmail will, and if you don't want Frozen Heart, get Randuin's Omen instead. FH brings more personal benefits than Omen does, though (dat CDR.) 20% attack slow dramatically reduces the amount of damage right-click carries put out and gives their team another reason to bring you down over others. You also gain a substantial amount of mana, which should eliminate any mana problems you might have had.

I consider Abyssal Scepter to be mandatory unless you already know someone else on your team will be buying one (Amumu, for example, might like to buy one for his MR item.) It benefits Galio way too well not to buy (you gain almost 100 AP from it as well as the substantial MR boost) and it will also benefit his team due to the aura.

Given the responses here, here's what I'm thinking now:

- Regrowth Pendant + mana potion.

- Make Philosopher's Stone and buy boots 1 as soon as you have the money. Stone provides income and sustain and will be turned into Shurelia's later, if ever.

- Buy Merc Treads, Chain Vest, and Negatron Cloak. If you plan on making a Randuin's Omen, buy Heart of Gold.

- Turn Chain Vest into a Glacial Shroud. Turn Negatron Cloak into an Abyssal Scepter.

- If AP is still a big threat (they've begun buying Void Staffs), begin building a Force of Nature starting with a Negatron Cloak. If AD is more of a concern, finish your Frozen Heart.

- If AD is still a problem after you complete Frozen Heart, make a Randuin's Omen (you should have had a Heart of Gold already if this is the case by looking at the enemy team's items and heroes.) If you don't need more armor, turn your Philosopher's Stone into a Shurelia's Reverie.

- Build a Force of Nature if you haven't already (again, starting with Negatron Cloak.)

This leaves you with one slot free for wards. All items (assuming no Omen and both FoN and Shurelia's) can be bought for under 12,000 gold. Galio is not a weak farmer, but if we can assume he will not be getting CS unless his carry is elsewhere, it seems reasonable.

We will be using magic pen reds, flat armor yellows, scaling MR blues, and variable quints. If you're solo top, take magic pen quints. If you're duo bot, take gold per 10 quints (again, you won't be getting much CS as duo bot since you will be in the support role.) Health quints and movement speed quints are also possible options.

Using 9/0/21 masteries to get 9% CDR, 15% magic pen, and quicker Summoners. Use Flash and Clairvoyance if you're duo bot. If you're solo top (meaning your team has another support), replace CV with Clarity, Heal, or Exhaust (ideally Clarity or Exhaust since you cannot get the perk for Heal.) Flash is mandatory for easier ult uses.

With this setup, at lvl 18 we can expect:

2300 HP (ick)
1635 MP
191 Armor (6683 EHP)
212 MR (7167 EHP)

187 AP with about 34-35 Magic Pen using magic pen quints (29 pen otherwise.)

I'd probably finish with a Rabadon's Deathcap if the game went particularly long and you didn't necessarily need that slot for wards anymore. Shurelia's + Frozen Heart with your masteries will CDR cap you as well. I feel CDR is very important for higher uptime on Bulwark if nothing else.

Thanks to Jsta for the sig image.

The damage from ult and passive is just a noob trap. You definitely want full tank, and thornmail is iffy. Pretty sure there's a cap for the damage on his ult, too. You really only use his ult for the taunt.

I usually rush catalyst, and run tele in case I have problems earlier than that. After catalyst, you really don't have mana problems.

From there, it's pretty situational, but I always like to aim for at least an aegis and glacial shroud, on top of the banshees.

mercs are an obvious, except on those super rare dodge occasions when they pick no cc, and you don't know what to do except run dodge runes and masteries. xD

But serious. full tank. Galio doesn't do as much damage as you wish.

oh yeah. and don't be afraid to run fortify if you have a boss blitz. >:D But that's kinda troll...

I'm aware of that. His ult's not difficult to get max damage on or at least close to max damage.

And regardless you don't want to tunnel vision into the ult. You'll get way more out of the CDR and the AS slow than what little you'll get out of Thornmail.

Are you tanking or do you have a full tank in addition to Galio?

If there's no other tank, you ought to build real tanking items.

Evildice, Urscythe, and Freddy are right. Full tank.

Evil's build is essentially exactly what I use on Galio. I've never finished with Rabadon's however because I just quite frankly don't care about dealing damage on him.

Also, I will very often sneak a Rylai's into the build somewhere.

Galio CAN build AP Offtank, but you'll need a real tank to back him up.

A Galio Offtanky build might be (Early Chalice which can be sold later) Merc, Sorc, or CDR boots, Abyssal / Rylai's / Zhonya's / Rabadon's / GA

You could even use a DFG I spose o_O

Frozen Heart is just a fantastic item. Who cares if you get 5% less damage on your ult? Your point is to tank. For example, take a late game teamfight. Both AD carries are extremely farmed. Your team has a Frozen Heart, the other team doesn't. Who wins?

Tbh, one common denomonator I see in TSM vs CLG is that hotshot always has a frozen heart, while a lot of the time, rainman doesn't. It should be noted that CLG usually beats TSM when these games get to late game. I'm not saying Frozen heart is the only reason for this, but in late game teamfights, usually the AD carries are going to pump out the most damage. Reducing this dps on an AD carry is just invaluable.

Thanks to Xiaowiriamu for the sig!
