Yes well, this time I don't agree Searz :P Sowwy.
It's like playing Fizz mid. He's full melee, and has to gap close to get the job done. You can also run Fiora mid and use the same style of play, but sheeple don't want to do it simply because they think AP should mid always no matter what because they do it that way in tourny. You can also run Tryndamere mid in certain match ups, he ***** on Kassadin for example. (Have to be careful about being camped though when you run gap closing melee champs, but yes Tryn can chain kill Kassadin easily.)
Even Lee Sin is a very solid mid laner. He can usually out sustain auto attacks and outsustain entire mana bars of harass to boot. Then landing a Q or W to minions and E for slow and harass into Q and you can chunk most squishy mid laners for the majority of their HP. Not to mention he's incredibly hard to gank mid. Almost impossible.
If they lane swap, have your jungler camp the squishy AP laner top and you can leave Lee mid if you please or send him top to follow.
Anyway, point being, yes, I think it's harder to be successful with most melee AD's under ranged harass, but once you hit an item like Wriggles to out sustain that harass, or get a few D blades and a vamp scepter, sure, I'd say melee AD champions can play mid lane quite comfortably if you are excellent with your zone control and reliably gap close.

It's very hard to be successful in mid without burst or range. That's why melee AD is usually a weak choice against ranged AP.
Melee ADs with burst work sometimes (that would be Pantheon and Talon).
