Most guides on mobafire still build him mana tank but i noitced on solo mid and other sites do alot dmg and enough to live through fights obvious he still needs be somewhat tanky.

After Riot ****** up Ryze in the darius patch I guess this could work now.

Wait what?
He got hugh dmg buff for 25 range on his Q and the passiv mana on his ulti. I would trad that every day for the changes. The most commen build on Ryze atm is get a RoA and then the old tear of the godes into tanky stuff. Upgrading to AAstaff if you fell like it.

he needs mana, and mana goes with tanky in all items but tear and sheen...
