The support role becomes less relevant as people either end up feeding horribly or getting fed as a result of people feeding horribly. But don't fret, why not help your ad carry get the better end of the bargain?
And like everyone else said; pick aggressive, tanky, melee supports (
Taric,
Alistar,
Leona)
PS: Do practice with
Alistar before you play him, it may be hard to pull of his basic combos at first.
1. Walk up to target =>
Pulverize =>
Headbutt target back to ensure kill [into turret].
2.
Headbutt target into wall => Wait until stun is over =>
Pulverize.
3.
Headbutt + instant
Pulverize upon contact. Much like
Unstoppable Force.
And like everyone else said; pick aggressive, tanky, melee supports (

if you're good at support you can carry. I got to gold playing support and top so far this season. I've been playing support for a long time now though. It's deffinitely harder because your presence late is minimum, but if you can get your AD fed consistently you won't have problems. And there are so many derp bot-lanes at low elos. Go for it

Thanks for the Signature MissMaw!
If your ADC can't farm or follow up, it don't matter how good your supporting is - your lane is ****ed (unless the laning opponent is equally as fail...). The best you can hope is to support other lanes during mid-late-game and let them carry your ADC.

I disagree moon. Doesn't matter how good you are at support, if your adc can't cs, you're in a lot of trouble
if your ADC can't cs you're in trouble regardless of what role you are

Quoted:
Sona. Crescendo. Enough said. That and her powerful poke in lane and inexhaustible health and mana for both her and her partner.
Why mana? She is a mana biatch, I am getting Soul Shround on her because of she just consumes too much, IMHO.
Alistar: Well, has been a while, but two things came up into my mind;
When I am playing him while gaming with a certain friend which shoots for Graves he complains that I shouldn't pull the enemy back if I don't need to - Because I am messing up with his (Graves) skillshots. Is this true or should I knock the enemy back once I knocked him up so he can't escape that well?
The second is that I suck with him during laning, after it I am doing really fine. How to do as an Alistar? AFAIK you can send him on a farm lane, as I recall a pro once said that Alistar gives not only heal but also enough CC to shutdown all enemy aggressions?
And if I want to go in, what is the combo/best way to do it during laning? Malphite-mimicing-combo?
@OP:
Which ELO are you, btw?
I personally see it this way: If I don't do support someone worse could do it. I have seen an Alistar warding in my team after he went boots and Doran's Shield first. Then he bought 3 wards only to stop 5 minutes later because he said and thought we only need wards during the laning phase.
And you can carry as a support - At least your ELO in the long way: If you influence in general is better than the enemy supports, your team will get to a win chance of more than 50%. There is no doubt in this.
Plus: If you don't start at low ELO, when then? Once you reached 1.7k ELO? Really, nobody wants to have a "noob support" which tries for the first time at this level.

Ba dum, tshh.
I'd recommend someone like

Thanks to Jovy for the sig!
You can carry in solo-quee just for the love of god don't pick nunu until you're at least 1500 elo. Nunu requires your ad to know how to win the lane by "himself".
Pick a support that can make big plays with minimum risk, and also keep your ad safe. Snowball potential is apreciated but not necessary.
Taric is the god tier of low-elo soloquee. His aura, his lane pressence and his ability to make a play without being bound to it and stuck if the ad-carry doesn't engage with you(his stun is ranged)
Lux is really ****ing strong as a support pick too. Her major strength is that she goes into a lane and wins it by herself, low-elo's can't comprehend her and at level 6 at equal grounds a bind which is hit is around 70% of someones health. She also has the ability to build a mejais and carry with a (almost) full ap build.
Lulu this ***** has the poke of a sona and the protection of a janna she's so ****ing strong throughout the game and she wins the lane by herself.
Blitzcrank fail a grab? doesn't matter wait 20 secs and zone again.
Zyra do you even lift? cuz this ***** does, she lifts the whole ****ing enemy team. All this while doing a ****load of damage.
YES you can carry in low-elo soloquee, with above mentioned supports.
Who didn't make the list?
Janna not enough lane pressence, your ad-carry is gonna have to use your shield - you can only make defensive plays(almost) she almost made the list and is still gud as niche.
Sona situational CC, you can only make a play after either 3 power chords or post 6 when ulty is up, not enough to effectively carry you through solo-q.
Leona Real stronk, playmaker of the ****ing year - this ***** does ****ing everything besides healing and shielding holy **** she stronk. BUT when she goes in, she goes all in. If your ad-carry just farms for 4 seconds before even noticing you, you're gonna loose out on the trade and you're gonna loose the lane from there almost(no recovery)
Nunu & Willump Almost no play-potential. Leaves too much to the ad-carry(also who the **** plays nunu, so boring :-/)
Pick a support that can make big plays with minimum risk, and also keep your ad safe. Snowball potential is apreciated but not necessary.

Champions like Janna or Sona aren't that great tbh if you can't rely that much on your teammates. Ward the opposite blue buff and encourage your jungler/ad carry to take those objectives from the jungler.
