I am a level sixteen summoner, I play alistar almost all the time, I am looking for a build that I can use with him that will allow me to be a support/tank type player. I never back away from a fight, and at times I basically kill myself trying to save my teammates from the other players(or bots). Any tips for me?

Runic Bulwark is your best friend. Just to make yourself a crazy tank, stick to tanky items that give health and resistances. Banshee's Veil, Frozen Heart, Randuin's Omen, Guardian Angel, Sunfire Aegis are all good examples of tanky support items.

What would be the best method of going about that build. Like what should I try to get first?
Also, would a warmogs be a good replacement for the guardian angel? I like the health boost that you can get from the item, and it helps with staying in battle longer. Although I can see the advantage in the Guardian angel, I also would like to know if the Warmogs would be a good replacement for it if I was just looking for a good health boost instead of the armor and revive capabilities.

Well you start off with a philosopher's stone and get Mercury's Treads. Beyond that its really all about situational building. Warmog's Armor is decent but grabbing a bunch of items that give you health AND resistances are mostly better than than just getting health. After you get the philo stone and merc treads it would probably be a good idea to get a Ruby Sightstone, then start building the Runic Bulwark. It is a good idea to wait to sell the philosopher's stone until after it has earned you some money and more than paid for itself. Past that, build based on what you need and who on the enemy team is the biggest threat.

No, absolutely wrong. I don't know where you expect to get all this gold for items. As a support you have to make due with the limited gold you get. There is no way you're going to be able to purchase Warmog's Armor and Runic Bulwark, both items that cost over 3k. Getting Runic Bulwark is already difficult enough given it's cost.

On alistar, I would open up:
Boots + Sight Wardx2 + Heath Potion (you'll have to wait in base 10 seconds before minions spawn for the potion)

or

Faerie Charm + Sight Wardx3 + Health Potionx2

The difference in both starts is personal preference and depends on the enemy lane. Against ranged champions you may want to go Faerie Charm, if you're looking to be aggressive and make alot of plays bot go for boots. A passive enemy support like Soraka probably warant Boots while an aggressive one like Sona might require Faerie Charm.

On your first trip back, always buy Sightstone even if you started Faerie Charm. As a melee support and one that hard engages, you need the health for survivability. Besides the effective g/10 on Sightstone is higher than Philo Stone. If you build Philo first, sure you get g/10 (not as much effective g/10) but it doesn't make you tanky, it gives you health and mana regen, that doesn't actually make you tanky. Alistar is an all-in support, once he engages, he's all-in, he needs to be able to take punishment.

After that you can build Philo if the lane is going well, if it isn't then you may want to start working on your Runic Bulwark and skip Philo all together.

If you feel you need to get tankier, you can always pick up a Kindlegem after Aegis of the Legion

Only upgrade Sightstone to Ruby Sightstone once the laning phase ends. The two wards should suffice for lane, but you will need more warding power after the laning phase.

Your core items should basically be:

Sightstone+ Runic Bulwark+ Shurelya's Battlesong+ Locket of the Iron Solari

These are in no particular order.

Locket of the Iron Solari is good against AoE based teams and champions like Karthus and Katarina. Armor Health and CDR for 2000 gold is basically a supports best friend too.

Runic Bulwark and Sightstone are pretty much mandatory on Ali, and you should get them every game

Shurelya's Battlesong is really good on ali, gives him an engage or escape, in general Shurelya's is a really good item because of the active, even despite the S3 nerfs it should still be bought

As for boots, I'd probably upgrade them into something like Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi. If you're trying to catch someone out then Mobility Boots and Swiftness are really good, but they aren't as effective late game. Even though CDR is ali's friend, Ionian Boots of Lucidity don't make him tankier or faster so I try and stay away from them and buy other boots. You can always get CDR through other means. Also, pretty much always get Enchantment: Distortion so you can flash+pulv frequently.

The items The Overmynd listed are good for tanks, but there is no way in hell a true support Alistar is really going to be able to build any of those.

Frozen Heart is in the realm of possibility as a 6th item and so is Randuins, but you should never get Warmog's, GA, Sunfire Cape, etc. You just won't have the gold income

^Don't forget Twin Shadows. The slow lets you catch up/stick to people better, and MS is always nice.

Shard is good too~

Also:

This isn't S2, and Ali synergizes with health MUCH better than with flat resists because of his ultimate.

95% of the time I skip Kage's Lucky Pick on ali. I generally don't want to delay tankiness for utility. Twin Shadows and Shard of True Ice are both good, but there is rarly a time when I want get Kage's rather than start on my Aegis of the Legion

Alot of what I suggested is based on doing well and HAVING the gold income through alot of assists (they are easy to get on ali, just heal everyone once during a teamfight and you dont even have to touch anyone on the enemy team to get 5 assists out of a fight). Yes, the items are hard to get as a support, and if you aren't doing well other items will have to be bought. And I believe that resistances are still important, even given the fact that their costs have gone up in general. Case in point, the fact that Runic Bulwark is essential for not only Alistar, but really for almost any support or tank. And you cannot tell me that Banshee's Veil is bad, in any sense. And I also agree with Moonie, kage's and its upgrades just don't really fit on alistar most of the time. For AP supports like Zyra, Nami and Lux its fantastic, but ali needs as much tankyness as fast as he can get it. I agree that focusing on health more than resistances is likely optimal on ali, but they cannot be ignored altogether.

Visit an Alistar build, read it, and test it. If you don't like it, try the next one!
