I have been playing A LOT of top lane recently and on just about any early aggressive champ I have found the red elixir to be the most effective starting item. Not only does it provide you with better stats then Dorans blade, it also allows you to pick up 4 health potions (which is more sustain then boots) and a ward!
It also gives huge baiting potential in the early levels, when an enemy garen sees you half hp just hanging around farming they might think it would be a good idea to go for a kill. Chuck your red elixir on and show them who is boss.
It really dominates the lane in the current meta.

It's a very risky move and if you don't gain an advantage off it, you're set behind by a bit.

If the potion times out, and they've gotten nothing off it, you've gotten a kill for almost nothing.

Very true. It is more risky then the standard starts of Dorans blade or boots. It is more about the discretion of the user though, you have to know when to use the pot to make the advantage stick.
It doesn't really have to give you permanent stats, it also brings a psychological factor to play. When they go for a trade and you walk out with an extra 50 hp and barely survive they won't be wanting to fight again. It may be circumstantial, but if you use it correctly and establish your lane dominance, the 3 minutes it lasts is more than enough time to give you a huge advantage in lane.
WHile being sustained by 4 pots and having a ward to prevent ganks.

Red pot is really strong on manaless champions like Riven and Renekton. I think Flask is nicer on most mana-using top laners though.
Thanks to Jovy for the sig!

How strong is flask at the moment?
I know on mana hungry tops like Elise it is great, but since now it is more expensive is it still worth buying on almost every mana consuming top lane champ?

I'm no expert on top lane, but the four starts I see are Flask+ward+pot, cloth 5 pots, 9 pot + 2 wards, and red pot. I almost never see red pot or 9 pot on mana users.
Thanks to Jovy for the sig!

how does that contribute to the topic? o0

anyways, redpot is really good if you have aggressive potential in your lane. It will help you stop dives and get off insane 1v1 kills. Its not even that risky because you dont have to pop it till you need it (sometimes takes 20min before you even pop it rofl). I take a redpot on any champion that i want to get an early kill with (not only manaless). Stacking up massive potions +1/2 wards is really good when you think your lane is weak and you just want to survive. Cloth 5 is a good mix of survivability, sustain and early stats. Use this when you want an early armguard.
Flask+pots is not that great anymore on most toplaners but i still use it on singed nidalee and elise in some situations. Its not a mustbuy anymore, just takes a little longer to get your moneys worth.
