So many people have said 'side note' in this post XD
Anyways,

Cho'Gath is primarily a tank. I know he has some good ap scaling and becomes tanky anyways.. But if you are playing him top lane I usually go an ad bruiser.
Ap Cho'Gath is nothing new to anyoe anywhere, in fact that is the most common way I see him built, so I wouldn't say this is a out of meta build at all.

I sed to build bruiser Cho'Gath back in the day.. With Frozen Mallet/ Atma's Impaler/ Wit's End and Guardian Angel.
Though in season 3 you would probably need to mix it up some more to make that viable.

Basically, for ap Cho'Gath, rush Rod of Ages then build ap items. Though Rylai's Crystal Scepter isn't very good on him.

Side note, (kehehe) not starting Boots is the meta. I would be more likely to consdier you nooby if you did start boots :3 Just start with Crystalline Flask with some Health Potion's and sight ward's.

Mundo goes where he pleases.

And pleases, where he goes.

I actually intially tried him ad seeing he started with a such a huge ad and good health. Then when I tried for the most part it was countered and easily failed (In season 2). It was to unreliable, and I still saw that more common that ap cho, which I only saw 1 other time. Also I forget that I have potions sometimes and they just sit in my inventory till I see I cant buy my sixth item, haha.

So.. How new are you to League exactly?
If you aren't using your pots something must be wrong. I mean.. even with Cho'Gath's built in sustain you would have to be taking some form of damage.. Do you actually vs lane opponents? :3

Yes I do. I didn't say I never use pots, but I will forget they are there sometimes seeing I do try to conserve mana, unless I'm fiddlesticks in which case I'll just throw crows all day. And yes I do take alot of damage seeing chogath is a tank and I do play some other tanky characters, or at least ones to throw themselves into the fray. And even if I had pots for battles I garuntee my vindictive mousepad would not allow me to use them. Don't ask why but it hates me when I play league. And I have been on league for a few months so not relatively new, maybe not on your level but no I am not thoughtless of the game.

You can (and probably should) use the item hotkeys for your potions. There's no reason to click on them.

Potions are mostly used for sustain in lane. It takes too long for them to heal you for them to be useful in a fight. However, when trading poke with an enemy champion, the three potions you could buy if you started with boots are a total of 450 effective HP, versus the 180 of a red crystal, not to mention the obvious benefits of having boots.

I do buy boots but only in the case of chogath I don't. And I understand they are meant for sustain but I see many others use them in battle to regenerate some damage over time. Also I don't know the hotkeys for the items. I just never new em.

Do you know of the hotkeys for attacks? Q W E R?
Hotkeys for items are just 1 2 3 4 5 6, respective to their item slot.

Specifically, item hotkeys for each slot are:
1 2 3
4 5 6
Unless you've re-bound them. Keep in mind that some items are by default click-to-use (such as wards and targeted actives like Hextech Gunblade's) while others are not (such as potions, aura-ish actives like Shurelya's Battlesong, and self-effects like Zhonya's Hourglass).

I do not recommend getting an Archangel's on Cho'Gath, at all. Early game he's mana starved, and it's just rough trying to build up the Tear. Rod of Ages is a much more reliable item on Cho'Gath (extra mana, health, and AP, and the Catalyst passive). You defiinitely don't need both. I do disagree about Cho'Gath being either/or for AP or tank. I usually build both, favoring one over the other depending on team composition.

Rather than start with Ruby Crystal, try starting with Saphire Crystal. You get a bit more mana (allows an extra Rupture or two), and leaves you with enough gold for a pair of health pots.

I've found that to be fairly effective depending on who I'm laned against. A little extra poke, helps build catalyst a little faster, and gives a pair of pots if you had a bad exchange.
