I can assure you that the benefits of doing this are immense and I can guarantee you will see the difference in your huge damage output of your ultimate. Tanks are always either as support, top or jungle. The support tank will always build armor as he needs to try counter the continuously growing output of the AD carry. The jungler will always go for his jungle items first, like Spirit of the Ancient Golem or Feral Flare. None of these jungle items grant Magic Resist. Top tanks like Singed, Malphite or Shen will usually start building Armour items first, as Spirit Visage and Banshee's Veil are usually the third, forth or fifth item they buy. This means that all tanks will start off with low base Magic Resist stats, only a bit higher than an AD carry or an AP carry due to their scaling MR blues (most likely). By having so much magic penetration early, even tanks will not be able to withstand the full rage of Katarina's Death Lotus. This means that you get more kills early on, and when the tanks start to then build their Magic resist items, you will already be getting your Hextech Gunlade, which means that you gain health as you use your ultimate, making it almost impossible for them to kill you. Choosing to get it as one of your final items to counter the opponent's tanks Magic Resist may already be too late, as your damage output will be reduced by a lot during the time you are trying to get your Void Staff, which will lead to many deaths and failed attempts to carry your team.
