Threats & Synergies
Teemo's Q cancell your auto-attacks, making unlikely for you to win the trade early game or stacking the passive. Plus, this build is focused on armor in the early game. You can still win because teemo is squishy, but he'll give you a hard time. My advice, avoid Teemo, especially if you still don't know the limits of Tham Kench.
Like Teemo, Shen can cancell auto-attacks, causing the fight to go to his favor. On this patch, Shen can build tank, ad or ap, make sure to respect the champion cause it can do a lot of damage. Tahm Kench easily wins trades against Shen till lvl.3. Dont dive him because of the taunt (on Shen's E).
Garen can't contest Tahm Kench. Hard Counter. That's it. Just be careful for kites early game and/or bad trades, he recovers his health, you not so much. When Garen hits lvl.6, make sure you have health to tank 400 dmg from his R.
Whenever he wants to trade and stacks his passive, use your W on him, wait for the ability to finish, the stacks will go away :) . Just make sure when he leaves your W to use Tongue Lash (Q) to leave him slow and impossible to hit you if you are still stacked. If he is agreesive and wants to ulti right after passive is stacked, make sure to not use E during the fight and you'll have enough shield to sustain.
Careful for her Q... it's just annoying. You can't punish her if she has the smoke thingy. Play aggresive and ask for help to get her behind early game. When she hits lvl.6, play safe. You can win, but with all the dashes she have you can't keep up.
Kayle's early game is weak, you can punish and zone her so that she doesn't get farm or even XP. It's easy to kill and she knows that, so she'll play super safe and wait for the jungler. On lvl.6 she still can't contest farm or punish your mistakes. When she hits lvl.11, my advice its to get the lane phase done with. She'll win the trades and eventually kill you.
When Hecarim is the Jungle, you have 2 options: play super safe or punish the enemy top laner for Hecarim's mistakes. Tahm Kench can 1v2 or escape easily from fights with his tankiness, but it's almost impossible to 1v2 against the top laner and Hecarim. If you still want to try, take Ignite over Teleport to quickly kill the top laner and the focusing Hecarim.
It's not a big threat, but we all know that his Airborne is annoying. Make sure to not get CC'ed and you're fine. Whenever he uses E wait for it to go away, you will lose the trade. If he wants to get you when you are slowed by E, Tongue Lash (Q) him.
You can hit your abilities very well since he needs to get close to you to give damage, and also he's squishy. PUNISH HIM :) Note: use Devour (W) after his ultimate to wait for the extra damage on hit to end.
Tryndamere has one of the best early game damage in LoL. Do not engage on long fights, he'll win. Wait for any mistakes, wave of minions favorable or for Bramble Vest. You'll win mid-late game if your mechanics are on point (and early if you are ahead).
If you are still new playing Tahm Kench, it can be stressful playing against Aatrox. He does a good amount of damage, and lvl.6 powerspike can be game changing. So, make sure that when he gets lvl.6 you have Bramble Vest and counter his R with Devour, to spend some time of that ultimate. When he's using Q, walk towards him, you'll win the trade.
HE DOESN'T DIE!!!! You can't do anything against him, play super safe.
Carefull for his combo, it can one-shot you easily early game. Late game it's just annoying, can take you off the team fight and be a pain in the ass. Or kill the ADC, it's 50/50 :).
Not so much of a threat, early game he can't do that much damage to kill you and if you can zone him early he does nothing in the team fights. Just be careful for his Ultimate.
Her Parry makes "cancells" your attacks. They become so slow it's impossible to attack. Be careful for that. If she gains a lead early it becomes tricky to kill her.
Don't let the dog eat :). Easy to kill, does nothing all game. Just stay in lane and punish him for stacking.
Annoying. As. FFFFFFFFFFFF. You can't farm, you can't poke, but he can't kill you without the jungler. If you are ahead of him, take advantage of that. And on top of that he was nerfed on his W, so try your best.
Nunu & Willump
Yep, Tahm Kench doesn't like champions with speed. Nunu is like Hecarim but less painfull and not that tanky early game. Plus his snowball is kinda easy to dodge.
If your jungler is Skarner, then you my friend have the game on your hands. His R his perfect for stacking your passive and perma-stun the unfornate. Unfornately Skarner doesn't deal that much damage, so this synergy is not perfect.
When lane phase is done, Senna becomes your best friend. The heal that she gives you can help diving somebody, the stun helps too and her Ulti makes wonders! Keep her close during fights.
If your support doesn't care about the ADC, Lucian it's one of the best combos on the bot lane or late game punisher. You can use Devour (W) on Lucian while his R is activated to make a untargetable Lucian Ultimate.
Her Ultimate does not make Tahm Kench happy if used wrong. Because she is squishy, her ulti is used to push people away from herself :(
Champion Build Guide
Started to play ranked for real in this season (11) and i'm currently Silver IV, hoping to get gold soon.
I made this guide to show you what i think it's best for Low ELO Tahm Kench Top Lane.
It's still in early development, i'll update when I think is necessary or if some questions pop up in the discussion section.
V.2.0. is out!! - Updated in 22/03/2021
It doesn't outplay that much, you'll only need Good Positioning to play well.
Let's get to some mechanics that will help you:
- Your passive An Acquired Taste is your best friend throught the whole game. It's the core of Tahm Kench, making way for unbeliveable plays.
- Trade with champions for stack on Grasp of the Undying in the early game if you think you can't win.
If you are waiting for the enemy early game on a bush or if you engage first with Grasp of the Undying ready to stack, you'll win the fight.
- Using Tongue Lash on an enemy champion will activate Approach Velocity, making it easy to stack the An Acquired Taste
- While in long fights, stack An Acquired Taste and use Devour. Let him rot in your belly :)
Once he's out, Tongue Lash to slow him down and stack passive again.
- Some champions (like Garen or Darius) have high damage abilities.
I advice to keep your Thick Skin for their ultimates ( Demacian Justice and Noxian Guillotine)
To make sure you can take advantage of this, here are some hints:
- Zone your opponent. If he's a squishy champion or he died early and you're ahead, make sure he doesn't farm or get XP. If he tries to contest, KILL HIM :)
- Don't be afraid to stay in lane if you're ahead, specially when you have red buff.
Your enemy will see you at low life, but little he knows that it doesn't matter. If you have Bami's Cinder and Bramble Vest already, you only need to tank enough to stack An Acquired Taste and eating him with Devour, after that Grasp of the Undying will grant you more life and bonus damage, resulting in him dying.
DO NOT do this if the enemy has some sort of high damage ability (like Garen).
- Take control of the River.
After all, Tahm Kench is the king of the river. Make sure you get scuttle (if jugler is playing bot-side) and ward river every opportunity you have. It is important so that you can put yourself in good position to 1v2 if you are ahead!
- 1v2?? This man is crazy
Yes, 1v2 with no problems. ONLY IF YOU ARE AHEAD, make yourself seem vunerable, like still playing on the middle of the lane instead of backing to tower (stay close to the middle bush, but not too close to the first one).
Deal the first strike, focus on the more easy to kill and try to lure them under the tower.
By doing this, you are denying the enemy jungler to gank somewhere else or to farm, with low chances of you dying.
- If you are getting behind, don't panic. Focus on farming and building the core itens, you will help your team snowballing :)
- Your lane phase ends when you reach lvl.11, when your Abyssal Voyage hits lvl.2, unlocking the possiblity to teleport through the map for free, with gank plays without the enemy noticing. The enemy top-laner will continue to push the lane, but you will help the team get stronger. Get back to lane to stop the push if needed.
My advices for the rest of the game are simple guidelines:
- Spilt push while your teammates are stalling the enemy team.
Tahm Kench can split push good enough to take a tower solo with only a wave of minions with 3/4 itens. If the other team is coming , use Abyssal Voyage or Teleport.
- Make jungle safe for you squishy mates.
- Don't be afraid to engage solo, you are an immortal tank, your teammates will back you up (if you ping enough :) ). Even if you die, the play is already made, the enemy team are all together and without most of the abilities and your team is going all in.
- Make sure there isn't a camp in the enemy jungler, we don't need him fed.
- Take the jungler to drake with Abyssal Voyage if needed. Sometimes stealing the drake is possible with a 8500 range surprise
In short, help the jungler or be the jungler :).
If you see yourself in a 1v3 or more, RUN!!
Tahm Kench can't do anything alone late game, he's dependent on his team. If the team doesn't cooperate, do your best to make the jungle safe for them.
Check the counter list for some advices against some of the worst champions to play against.
NEVER engage on a champion with crowd control if you are on a bad position (like under a tower or in the enemy jungle). You're compromising yourself and those who are going to help you.
Only do this if you have 100% that no one is coming to help your enemy.
I hope this guide can make your normals/rankeds more enjoyable, Tahm Kench is really fun to play.
Let's get Tahm Kench to 1% pick rate?
