Extreme Threats

LeBlanc
LeBlanc’s high mobility, burst, and invisibility make her extremely dangerous. She can dodge your skillshots, trade in and out instantly, and potentially delete Vel’Koz before he can react. Her chains can also catch you out of position, preventing safe poke.

Draven
Draven thrives with Vel’Koz because Vel’Koz’s poke and zoning make it easy for Draven to stack his Spinning Axes safely. Vel’Koz can poke opponents out of lane, setting up Draven for huge early-game damage and kills.

Champion Build Guide
I’ve been playing League for a year and Vel’Koz has been my main obsession for all this time. Between support, mid and even the occasional off-role chaos (apc and toplane), I’ve stacked up hundreds of games on him in this short amount of time and built a pretty deep understanding of how to get value out of this champion—whether it’s controlling fights, punishing positioning, or squeezing every bit of damage out of your combos.
I’m not a pro player or some big streamer; I’m just someone who genuinely loves the champion and everything about him and i respect Azzapp a lot. This guide is my attempt to put everything I’ve learned into one place—straightforward, practical, and actually usable in real games, not theorycraft that falls apart in soloqueue. Feel free to correct me but hey at the end of the day I got 100 at geometry so I'm right :)
If you’re someone who enjoys Vel’Koz, wants to pick him up, or just wants to get better results on him, I hope this helps you do exactly that. And if you want to ask anything, talk matchups, or just chat about the champion, you’re always welcome to reach out to me on my Discord (frostytheg)
Dark Harvest, Cheap Shot, Sixth Sense, Ultimate Hunter
Secondary:
— Legend: Haste + Coup de Grace, or
— Manaflow + Transcendence if you need mana and CDR.
Pick this when the enemy botlane is squishy and you know you can get stacks early. DH gives huge execute damage mid–late game.
Take Coup de Grace here if your goal is to one-shot squishies, because DH + Coup lines up perfectly.
Take Cut Down only if the enemy team is high-HP and hard to burst.
<
>
Comet Page (Consistent)
Comet, Manaflow, Transcendence, Gathering Storm
Secondary:
— Legend: Haste + Cut Down, or
— Legend: Haste + Coup de Grace
Use this when you want consistent poke and reliable damage in lane. Comet works best when the enemy botlane cannot dodge easily (immobile champs or short-range lanes). Manaflow + Transcendence keeps your poke up without going OOM. You take Cut Down because support Vel’Koz often fights longer fights vs tanks and bruisers, and Cut Down gives more value than Coup de Grace.
Comet, Manaflow, Transcendence, Gathering Storm
Secondary:
— Legend: Haste, Cut Down
This is the most stable rune page for poke control in midlane. It’s for matchups where you intend to play the lane slow, farm, poke safely, and scale. Comet is easy to land with E setups.
<
>
Dark Harvest Page (burst APC)
Dark Harvest, Cheap Shot, Sixth Sense, Ultimate Hunter
Secondary:
— Legend: Haste + Coup de Grace (most common) or
— Manaflow + Transcendence if you need mana regen and long fights.
DH APC is for matchups where you can reliably hit Q or force trades. It scales extremely well and pairs with your R for kill pressure. Coup de Grace is correct here because APC Vel’Koz plays for burst kills, not long fights. Cut Down is only better when enemy team is heavily tank-stacked.
Safe lane pairing. Heal gives you and your ADC extra sustain and helps you survive poke lanes. Use this when fights are drawn out or enemy botlane has strong chip damage.
<
>
Flash + Exhaust
Take this into divers, assassins, counter enemy mobile ADCs, Draven players, all-in lanes. Exhaust allows you to survive dives and turn them. Very useful against hyper-aggressive supports too.
<
>
Flash + Barrier
Use this when the enemy botlane has burst combos (Leona, Rell, Nautilus, Brand, Annie). Barrier denies kill windows that usually punish immobile mages. (I don't really recommend this btw, but I mean technically its true)
The safest and most consistent pairing. TP lets you return to lane fast, cover roams, and maintain tempo. Best for scaling matchups and for playing around map pressure.
<
>
Flash + Heal
A defensive alternative when you’re into poke or harass lanes. Heal gives you the sustain to stay in lane without being forced to recall early. Helps you avoid losing tempo against long-range mages.
<
>
Flash + Barrier
This is the anti-assassin setup. Barrier denies kill windows from Zed, Talon, Katarina, or any burst champions. It lets you survive their full combo long enough to turn fights with your R.
Default support order. Best poke, lane control, and consistent harass.
<
>
Q → E → W
Use this when the enemy botlane is aggressive or you need earlier CC to peel or counter-engage.
Your go-to midlane order. Maxing Q gives you waveclear + lane poke. E second gives you safety and setup opportunities. W last since it's just extra chip until midgame.
<
>
Q → W → W → E (heavy poke)
Use this when the lane is extremely easy and you want to shove and poke constantly. Strong AoE waveclear and harassment under tower.
<
>
Q → W → W → E → W (full poke path)
For matchups where you have zero threat and want to play from maximum range. High DPS poke from W + Q chips the enemy constantly without interacting.
Sorc Boots → Zak’Zak → Luden → Horizon → Shadowflame → Rabadon
Full poke build when the enemy team has many squishies. Play to delete carries with Q + R combos.
<
>
2) 4+ Squishy Build
Sorc Boots → Zak’Zak → Luden → Stormsurge → Shadowflame → Rabadon
Similar idea but Stormsurge gives more mobility and burst. Perfect when you can snowball botlane.
<
>
3) 3+ Tanky Build
Lucidity → Zak’Zak → Blackfire → Liandry → Shadowflame → Rabadon
Use this version against tanky teams. Blackfire + Liandry gives you strong long-term burn damage.
<
>
4) 4+ Tanky Build
Lucidity → Zak’Zak → Malignance → Liandry → Shadowflame → Rabadon
Even stronger against tanks. Malignance + Liandry shreds HP bars in teamfights.
Doran → Lucidity → Blackfire → Horizon → Liandry → Rabadon → Shadowflame
General midlane build for normal games. Strong poke, good sustained damage, and solid teamfight presence.
<
>
6.2 Burst vs Squishies Build (4+ squishy)
Doran → Sorc Shoes → Luden → Shadowflame → Stormsurge → Rabadon → Zhonya/Banshee
Full penetration and burst build to delete enemy carries. Zhonya/Banshee should be bought right after Shadowflame if needed, not last, since squishy games have high damage and fast fights.
<
>
6.3 Anti-Tank / Heavy Teamfight Build (4+ tanky)
Doran → Lucidity → Malignance → Liandry → Void Staff → Rabadon → Shadowflame
Use this version to burn tanks from full HP. Malignance + Liandry + Void Staff gives insane sustained DPS, and Shadowflame adds extra penetration.
Excellent when you win lane early and can poke without dying. Replaces Doran’s and gives huge AP spikes later.
<
>
2) Banshee’s Veil
Ideal against long-range engage or heavy CC. Can replace Shadowflame or Void Staff depending on your core build.
<
>
3) Zhonya’s Hourglass
Perfect versus assassins or divers. Best bought mid-build to prevent deaths before you spike.
<
>
4) Cosmic Drive
Fits games where you can safely poke and need mobility + ability haste. Usually replaces Horizon or Shadowflame.
<
>
5) Morellonomicon
Required against heavy healing teams. Replaces Shadowflame in your core build.
<
>
6) Cryptbloom
Great against shield-heavy compositions or magic-resist stacking champions. Can replace Horizon or Shadowflame depending on your core build.
<
>
7) Abyssal Mask
A niche tank item for full AP enemy teams. Grants MR and amplifies your team’s magic damage.
<
>
8) Rylai’s Crystal Scepter
Great when you need slows to catch mobile enemies. Usually replaces Horizon or Shadowflame depending on your core build.
Play for poke and lane pressure. Hit Q splits, zone enemies off waves, and punish mispositioning. Never front-line; your all-in is weak unless your jungler is nearby.
<
>
Midlane Vel’Koz
Control the wave with Q/W, punish with E, and look for angles to ult. Don’t overfight early unless you have Dark Harvest stacks available. Farm safely and hit item spikes.
<
>
APC Vel’Koz
A more aggressive version of midlane. Play for burst, roam timings, and quick picks. Damage spikes hard with Luden/Shadowflame and Dark Harvest stacks.
Standard burst combo. Use this to quickly delete carries when they’re isolated.
<
>
E → W → Q → R
Reliable full combo when the enemy fully commits. Maximize your crowd control and damage output.
<
>
Q split → W → R
Long-range poke kill. Ideal for safely picking off low-health targets from distance.
<
>
E defensively
Never waste E early unless you have a guaranteed hit. Use it to disengage, peel, or set up for a safer follow-up combo.
Go for Anti-Tank build + Cut Down + Comet.
<
>
Squishy enemy team
Burst Luden build + Dark Harvest or Comet for maximum kill pressure.
<
>
Assassin midlane
Take Barrier + early Zhonya to survive their all-ins.
<
>
Heavy poke lanes
Use Heal + Comet page for sustain and lane safety.
<
>
You are winning lane
Pick Dark Seal to snowball and scale faster.
<
>
Enemy has shields
Build Cryptbloom to break through protective barriers.
<
>
High healing team
Pick Morellonomicon to reduce healing and sustain.
<
>
Need extra safety
Buy Banshee or Zhonya depending on threats.
Changelog
-1st entry [24/11/2025]: Made Guide Chapters and they are probably definitive i dont have plans on expanding, cause I think I have covered everything I know of (that isn't extra af).
-2nd entry [25/11/2025]: It took a lot of effort for this update and it took me some hours tbh. I made it so you're able to choose between supp, mid and adc. and also made the "starting items" and "item guides" in the builds section. I also want to thank everyone who has upvoted this and helped me reach top 5 trending currently. Love you all even if you dont see this
