Introduction

Hi everyone it’s Mattheos here and in this Guide i’m going to share with you everything you need to know to become a Challenger Thresh God in Season 8. Thresh is mainly played in the support role and has one of the highest pick rates of any champion across all ranks, this owes to his extremely fun playstyle and his impactful ability to play both aggressively finding picks and defensively peeling his carries. Thresh is considered a champion of medium-high difficulty but this is only because of his steep learning curve. Picking up Thresh for the first time you may find his abilities awkward to grasp but you will soon feel comfortable playing him, that said he is certainly one of the most difficult champions to master both in terms of mechanical skills and knowing which situational playstyle to adopt.

Thresh is always a popular pick because his extremely good cc, playmaking ability both engage and disengage and the fact that there if few counters. Cons are that he requires a lot of communication with teammates especially in lower divisions and has long cds on skillshots if you miss them.

Summoner Spells

For Summoner Spells on Thresh you want to be taking Ignite and Flash in most situations as this synergises perfectly with his potential to aggressively dominate laning phases and make all-in plays for your team, however Exhaust is a necessary choice in many situations so should be changed respective of the enemy team comp.

Runes

With regards to runes in Season 8, Resolve is the number 1 primary tree on Thresh and Aftershock should be your keystone of choice it has good synergy with Thresh’s ability combo and playstyle. It gives you increased Armor and Magic Resist by 20+30% for 2.5s after immobilizing an enemy champion and then does AoE Magic damage to nearby enemies. Other Resolve runes can be considered personal preference as are secondary runes but I currently recommend Inspiration in patch 8.14+.

After immobilizing an enemy champion gain defenses and later deal a burst of adaptive damage around you.

After taking damage from an enemy champion, the next three spells or attacks you receive from enemy deal 20-50 less damage.

Duration: 5 seconds
Cooldown: 45 seconds

Start the game with an extra 60 health. At 4 takedowns, consume that health to gain an adaptive bonus of 9 Attack Damage or 15 Ability Power

Gain additional permanent max health when minions or monsters die near you.

Gain a free Biscuit every 3 min, until 12 min. Biscuits restore health and mana. Consuming a Biscuit permanently increases your max mana.

Your potions, biscuits and elixirs last 20% longer, and you gain 5% Movement Speed while under their effects

Abilities

Damnation (Passive): Provides armor and ap scaling by harvesting souls that drop from monsters and minions.. This improves the damage of your abilities, and your tankiness but means, you need to always collect souls. Besides walking over them, you can throw your lantern to collect souls from far away.

Death Sentence (Q): This is tThresh trademark ability, it is a gap closer, engage tool but also a means of escape surfing. It is worth highlight that once cast it has a .5 animation delay so when aiming this ability it is crucial to Madlife predict your opponents movement. It can also be used to interrupt abilties that require casting and temporarily displaces enemy. Its important to know that you also dont need to be facing the direction to which you throw your Q which allows for many sick plays. Curve hook through by throwing Q to the right side of a minion. Neat tip is if you flay immediately after castin Q it will speed up your cast.

Dark Passage (W): This is one of the best and easisest means of providing escape to your team mates to reposition but also allows you to make aggressive plays by pulling in teammates from fog of war to follow up an all in hook+ flay combo. It also provides vision in brushes which prevents you from having to face check if you are coneerned the enemy might be setting up a sneaky baron.

Flay (E): Is One of the best and difficult parts of Thresh kit. Using it’s passive thresh can put out some seriously good poke when managed but Flay’s main attribute is for its peel potential allow you to knock enemies away or bring them near. Notably, you can use it to disrupt enemy abilities and escapes.

The Box (R): One of the most slowing abilities in the game, Thresh's ult makes enemy players make the decision between keeping their position within-side or trying to escape taking damage and a slow penalty and for this reason it can be decisive in teamfights. What’smore if used well with Thresh’s Q and E abilities you can lock down an enemy easily for your adc to do his business.

For skill order, you want to be always start your E ability Flay for extra damage, poke and peel, levelling up Q Death Sentence second followed by W Lantern. You should prioritise maxing Q, then E and lastly W. Putting a point in your ultimate The Box at every oppoturnity.

Gameplay

Laning - in lane aggressive, look for hook opportunities, full cc chain, using AA’s whenever you have max damage up from your flay passive and enemy goes up to last hit. If enemy support is squishy utility such as Soraka or Lulu, often betterto focus your engages on them, as they will be easier to kill. When against a melee support, you want to peel these from your adc at all time with flay but also pressure them ith auto attacks because they woint be able to easily trade back without going for a full-blown engage. By keeping aggressive tanks pressured and low hp, it makes it very difficult for them to engage for a favorable fight. To avoid getting poked down yourself, but hard poke lanes make sure to utilize the bot lane side bushes and don’t be afraid to pop health potions.

Roaming - Thresh is one of the best roaming supports because of his Death Sentence and Flay. His ganks are especially potent when joined by your jungler. Since mid lane is the closest lane to bot lane, you can easily traverse the river with your mobility boots and gank mid at every opportunity helping snowball your mid laner - in pullin off such a gank you always want to walk up and start with flay before using your q.

Best times to gank -You just recalled and you are supposed to go bot lane. This is a good time to roam because the enemy won't notice your disappearance, they'll assume you are still buying or just haven't arrived in lane yet for some reason, and the enemy mid laner won't see you coming because he won't get pinged back most of the time. This is most successful if you come from the top side of the river as it will be entirely unexpected and is far less often warded against.
The enemy mid laner is pushing and in your laner's zone. This makes it hard for him to retreat because his base is so far away.

When bot lane is shoved into the enemy tower. While the enemy bot lane duo is forced to last hit under tower, you can roam (and even bring your ADC) mid and surprise the enemy mid laner with a gank.

When your jungler is ganking mid. The best support roams will often be in conjunction with your jungler. When both you and your jungler gank a lane, it’s an almost certain kill even if the enemy laner has Flash. Imagine playing mid lane and a Maokai and Thresh suddenly appear in your lane. You’re dead.
AS thresh in teamfights, you primarily want to focus on using your multiple forms of CC to peel your adc and keep him safe so that he can do damage to win you the fight, this is especially iumportant when you have an immobile adc such as kogmaw and the enemy have an assasin or big burst. The key here is to use flay to push enemies away and death sentence/the box to lock them down. Your lantern can be used to either provide an extra shield to your carry or help them reposition if they get caugh out. The other more aggressive way in which you may find yourself is as the hard engager in a teamfight, knowing when to switch from being a peel support to start team fights really discerns the legendary thresh gods such as bunnyfufu, olleh and mad life from your mum’s home videos.

Combos

Level 2/Pre 6 Combo:

You start with your Flay rather than your Death Sentence because 1) it makes it harder for them to dodge your Death Sentence after they've been slowed by Flay and 2) it gives your opponent to waste Flashbefore you've thrown out your Death Sentence. If necessary to close the gap, you can use Flash before E. Also make sure to AA a lot during your Combo, especially at early levels when your AA damage is very high.

Combo Post 6:

This gives them a chance to Flash out of your box, but then get dragged back into it by your Q.

But you can also start with your Q if you're sure you can hit it. If the enemy has a gap closer like Rocket Jump, once you've Q'd them in you can wait a second or two before using your Flay and then interrupt their gap-closer with it.

Lantern Combo:

The lantern combo entails dragging your ally into the enemy with your W, having hit your Q first. Your ally can either be your ADC or your jungler, usually they'll either be in the fog of war or just far away. Once your ally is in and you've Q'd them close, you reactivate your Q quickly and flay them towards you and your ally.
