Introduction
Kennen has a decent early game, a struggling middle game and a fairly strong late game if built properly.
He also has can farm fairly easily while still safely throwing down harassment and has a decent disengage.
I've played almost only kennen and I have over 200 ranked games as kennen this season and over 1000 normal games as kennen throughout my time playing LoL.
Hope my guide is helpful.
There are quite a few different combos of runes.
Little Extra AD
As I mentioned in the masteries section. Some people like the extra AD in this case. You would build either Movement speed or AP quints, Marks of Hybrid Pent., Health Seals, And either scaling MR or flat AP glyphs. This is a little more of a hybrid style.
More AP
Flat Ap quints and glyphs, flat Health Seals and magic pent runes. This is a very bursty style and is quite a bit more dangerous against assassin jungles and laners.
A little more tanky
Flat AP Quints or MoveSpeed Quints. Scaling MR Glyphs, Health or Armor Seals (I prefer health) And Magic pent Runes.

Kennen is strong early against champions who have to melee to cs. Champions like Fizz and Kassadin can be shut down early by harassing A LOT. Fizz especially falls into this category. However As the game goes on you are going to need to be far more careful because they can easily burst you down. These champions can be very easy to shut down as long as you play very safe. Often times they only get fed off kills not farm. So just play it safe, beat them in CS and when a team fight roles around they will not be very dangerous. This is the case for most assassins.
Kennen struggles against champions with really strong poke with easy CC. Syndra, Lux, And annie all fall into this category. They are all extremely difficult to lane against. Just focus on farm and staying away. Make sure to read up on their abilities when you are matched against them. Understanding their abilities and more importantly the cool downs is VITAL to success in mid. Knowing when your enemy has an ult or a stun or can completely change how and trade goes.
In laneing there it is important to know when to engage on champions. People like annie and fizz can be very easy to blow up early. Or at least harass and force them to back. These early levels and CS will give your snowball a good push in the right direction. This will come with time but a better understanding of champions abilities will decrease the time that it takes.

Work on your CS. It is easily the most important part of any lane aside from support. Knowing how to manage your minions and easily throw in a little harassment with both autos and abilities will drastically help in lane. Focusing on this alone will raise your elo. I know this is said a lot. But knowing how to practice this is very important. Set goals for yourself to hit by certain time points. Take missing CS seriously, you are just allowing your enemy to catch up.
Learn how to manage your Energy. Last hitting without abilities will help with this. However sometimes it is one of the only ways to get CS when your enemy you are fighting can burst you down to fast. Know how to reset some of your energy is very important. Things like using your E to run away can really hit the amount of energy you have. Also know that landing stuns and making contact with any enemy with your E does give you energy back. Your ult requires no energy whatsoever. Also Many people do not know this but Blue buff towards mid game is incredible on kennen. You have faster CDR and much higher energy regen which makes you be able to throw down a lot of damage rather than having to wait for energy to reset.
Don't underestimate the power of your auto attacks. Not only does reseting your special shuriken faster help you with harassing. That little extra health from your masteries and your Dorans blade keep you in lane much longer.
