early laning phase
In the early game riven either gets stomped or dominates, the way you can dominate is by getting a small early lead and all inning. A way you can win a losing matchup is learning when that champ is the weakest and expliot it(for example renektons lv.1 is bad so you should harass him and get a first blood or an early lead). For your starting items if its a poke matchup then get Dorans shield, if you are going against kale get long sword and if its any other matchup then go Dorans blade
late laning /mid game
If you are a head then roam and get more fed or put your other lanes ahead. However if you are behind then just stay in lane and get as much gold as possible.
Late game
If you are ahead assert the top diff, if you are behind use your cc to win team fights
