Introduction

Hello. My name is wolfenflautist, and this is my very first champion guide on MOBA Fire. I enjoy thinking of unconventional builds that may work in a game. Given that Jayce has the advantage of both ranged and melee at his disposal, I figured I would capitalize on that and give him items that would normally be exclusive for either ranged or melee champions.

My reasoning is because his diversity gives him an opportunity to shine in many different ways. The hammer mode for his weapon would benefit from Ravenous Hydra while the gun mode would benefit from Runaan's Hurricane or even Rapidfire Cannon if you so choose to buy that instead of Runaan's Hurricane. Jayce's flexibility allows him to use several unusual item builds, and while people may find this inconvenient in certain ways, I find that it's perhaps a good way to take advantage of something that I don't think others consider.

I've decided to play around with this build, and it's actually very effective. The purchase order is still a bit up in the air, however. This is because I've only experimented with this in one order instead of playing it in different ways to see how it would work. I do plan to experiment with the order a bit. You will also notice that I have some alternate items that can substitute for items that you feel may not work. This is entirely experimental, so I hope that the initial build is to your liking.

Core Build Description

To expound further on the reasoning for this build, I've decided to make another chapter detailing the benefits of each item featured.

Berserker's Greaves: Many people would find these to be a bit strange for a build like this. I'm an ADC and top lane main, so this kind of feeds towards the ADC side of me, I suppose. Attack speed is essential for pretty much any ranged champion. Since I tend to stick to the gun mode for Jayce's weapon 3/4 of the time, attack speed is ideal for him. This will allow for easier csing and smoother trades against your lane opponent.

Black Cleaver: Given that top lane champions are normally tanks, this would give him some extra health along with attack damage. It also fits the red theme, so I thought it ideal for what I was going for.

Runaan's Hurricane: Now before you all start getting all up in arms about this choice, hear me out. Not only does it fit the red theme, but it also works well with the gun mode for Jayce's weapon. Plus, it gives a chance for crit damage, which would be a nice addition to what I already have. And the attack speed it gives isn't too bad, either. Despite the item being meant for ranged champions, the attack speed that it adds still applies to Jayce's weapon's hammer mode, so don't think it's useless. It's far from useless.

Bloodthirster: This item may not come as too much of a surprise given that it's essential for almost all red builds. Attack damage coupled with 20% life steal is beyond ideal. The sustain will be there, and by this point, you'll be a monster in lane. I haven't made this one of the early items to build yet, but I plan to try it when I have a chance! I'll be sure to update this once I play a game with Bloodthirster being bought earlier than I have done before.

Duskblade of Draktharr: This one may seem a bit self-explanatory. THe extra damage is always nice, as well as the armor penetration and the tiny amount of extra movement speed.

Ravenous Hydra: Yet another unpopular item that people don't seem to think would work on Jayce. The life steal and damage as well as its AOE damage work well with his hammer. It would work well for Jayce to regain missing mana, and I wouldn't be surprised if the mana he gains from his hammer's basic attacks would be even greater with this item in his item set. And this is yet another item that I think could possibly be bought earlier. I would just say for you to play around with it a bit and see how it works best for you. Hopefully you enjoy using this new Jayce build and can win plenty of games with it!

Playstyle

To clear some things up, my main roles are ADC and top lane. I'm honestly more used to having some range, so I usually use the gun mode on Jayce's weapon the most. Because of that, his mana gets eaten up a lot due to using his Q and even the E and Q combo to either get minion kills or to harass my lane opponent. Always try to zone your opponent out so if you end up getting low on mana, you can just switch to the hammer and try regaining however much mana you need to push effectively or to clinch a kill.

If you need to get opponents off of you, it's best to switch to the hammer stance and use his E to knock one of them back so you can either escape or get the kill on the other one (assuming you're not too low on health and/or mana). The AOE from Ravenous Hydra can help you (possibly)regain mana faster. Add some life steal and attack speed to the mix, and you're back at full health and mana without needing to leave your lane.

If you want to take advantage of the benefits of attack speed, life steal, and attack damage, you may want to get some of the early items to benefit you there. This is shown in the Early Core Items list with two Vampiric Scepters, Caulfield's Warhammer, and Recurve Bow.
