If fight is inevitable, try to use e first. This way the clone get's tangled up into the fight, and as you target the enemy there is a big chance that the clone will get hit too, which will increase your overall damage by up to 60%.

When using e, nearest tentacle will automatically hit the clone once every 3s. You can play around that in early game for an additional tentacle slam. When enemy goes in, e him first, line up your q the way that the enemy champion has to get hit by either e or q tentacle, then use w for a third slam.
