Introduction
Hello dear readers, you have come across a Jungle Phoenix

When I play
Udyr I aim to be an off-tank, I will deal moderate amounts (to high in early game) of damage with
Wingborne Storm without any real offensive items, runes (except for
Greater Mark of Attack Speed) or masteries. This is the main reason why I chose to go down the defensive tree and put the remainder of the points into utility. Another important reason why I chose these masteries is because we want to get the maximum amount of movement speed available for the very reason that
Udyr ganks are mediocre and his real only ganking tool is his raw movement speed. Last but not least, we want to have the increased buff duration mastery. This allows us to gank more often with red buff and be able to spam skills for a longer time when we have blue buff.

I want to get one thing straight and that is the misconception that Phoenix
Udyr needs
Wriggle's Lantern. The mitigation of damage and recovery of health that
Udyr gets from
Iron Mantle is sufficient to keep him at a reasonable health level. You might need some additional potions early on in the game but that's it. Next to this,
Wriggle's Lantern provides you with lifesteal and because the damage from
Wingborne Storm is magic lifesteal is a wasted stat. Spending 1600 gold on an item that you do not need is waste of money and utterly useless.
Boots and 3
Health Potion: We start off with these items because we have sufficient armor to do a full clear and have enough health left to gank afterwards. The reason we choose these items is because like mentioned before
Udyr's only gankign tool is raw movement speed and with
Boots we will outrun anyone and hopefully get off some succesful ganks.
Mercury's Treads or
Ninja Tabi: We rush level 2 boots to get even more movement speed and be even better at ganking! As
Udyr you have 2 choices when it comes down to buying boots:
-
Mercury's Treads: You buy these boots if they have a large amount of CC and/or deal a significant amount of magic damage (when they are running dual AP or their jungler is AP orientated).
-
Ninja Tabi: You buy these boots if they do not have a large amount or CC and/or have a lot of physical damage.
I personally prefer
Mercury's Treads because of the CC reduction it gives you, because in my build there is no room for another item that gives CC reduction. I believe that CC wins you teamfights and ultimately the game, so CC reduction is your best option in teamfights. Besides this, once
Udyr has
Randuin's Omen he has enough armor to survive. The only magic resistance item we get is
Wit's End so with
Mercury's Treads we elevate our magic resistance to an acceptable level.
