Its time to look at Zilean “ The Chronokeeper “ or as I like to call him “ The 2nd To Last Time Lord “. ( Yes as in doctor who ). Anyways Zilean is a AP mid/support who depends on his ability combos, poke, and speed to do focus down enemies, allow Zileans teammates to get kills, and get his teammates out of bad scenarios. Zilean is a rather less played support since he is seen by some as a " fake support " and " kill steal
master ". Here are some pros and cons to zilean.

Flash

A must have for Zilean. For defensive purpose Zilean may be fast,but CC will be the death of him and of course those LCS plays with the wall flash is always a bonus. For aggressive this is to take down a enemy with your overpowered bombs.

Heal

If your adc doesnt take it you should take it. As of now it seems that all adcs have been taking heal over other spells, but if you find a adc that has another spell id say take this spell.

Exhaust
Maybe. Id say no since Zilan already has a slow, but if your adc already has heal you can take this just to go overkill or to slow 2 people down. Only take if all other spells don't seem to be needed.

Ignite
Probably not. Never take this as support of course but mid lane maybe. You already have time bombs that act as a for sure kill making ignite not seem necessary. However having a champ ignited and being bombed will do tons of damage. So once again if you want to go overkill take this then.

Smite
God no. If I ever see a jungle Zilean again in my entire life I will personally report and deport that Zilean.

Barrier
Nope. You have Chronoshift so why take this?

Clarity For expert Zileans no. However this spell is great while you are still learning zilean. Zilean is mana hungry so having this for your first few games will help you at first be better with Zilean.

Teleport
Nah. Zilean cant push lanes for ****. Also hes super fast already so there is no need.

Clairvoyance

Revive
Not even on super rapid ultra fire ( Or whatever it was called ) should someone take this becuase zileans Chronoshift that. Duh!

Cleanse
Never used it on Zilean or any champ. Id say no but if you see some hidden super power behind this spell be my guest.

Ghost
You are already super fast! No need to be that much faster...

Basically You want to focus on Zileans Time Bomb skill. Then get Rewind Upgrade your Chronoshift when you can. Also the last thing you should upgrade is Time Warp.

Heightened Learning
This is Zileans passive. This gives Zilean and his allies 8% xp gain. This is global and is awesome for Zileans teammates early game since it gives them a 1-2 level advantage to their enemy. It only works when Zilean is alive however so it is important that you remain alive especially early game. This should not be a problem when you get Chronoshift however :D.

Time Bomb
This is Zileans Q. This is his main source of damage as well as his amazing poke. It has long range and is very annoying to the enemy team. It also has a small area of effect that is great to see as the support you just bombed runs into their adc so they take damage to! Its not till you get Rewind when this becomes super good. When you bomb a target use Rewind and bomb the target again. The old bomb explodes and the new bomb is placed. This deals a nice amount of damage but don't try this to often till you get Athene's Unholy Grail or another item that gives you mane regeneration.

Rewind
This is Zileans W. This reduces the cool downs of all of Zileans other ability's. This is great since it allows Zilean to do nice combos such as his Q+W+Q combo or his E+W+E combo.Considering that you get a 40% Cool down this allows your cool down on Chronoshift which is about 108 secs to be reduced to about 30 secs! Your Time Bomb as well as your Time Warp will have even shorter cool downs than before. So this makes Zilean able to use all his abilities with very little cool down time even if you don't use rewind. This makes Zilean amazing late game as long as you build for the cool downs as well as mana regeneration.

Chronoshift
Zilean's Ult Is chrono Shift which allows Zilean to revive a allied champion or zilean himself to be revived if Zilean or the allied champion dies. This is great all game since its effective all game, and will make your teammates love you. It does take time to master it however since you can use the ult to early or to late often on you or a team. This ability is one that with only practicing zilean and his ult can you master. Some people say that zilean should never use his ult on himself. This is not true. Especially late game its ok for zilean to use his ult on himself since he can use it twice in a teamfigth! ( 30 Seconded cool down if you use Rewind and have max cool down reduction. Zilean can also use his ult for nice baits. Sometimes I dive into a rather unskilled team so they all focus me. I just use my ult they all focus me and then my team comes in to kill them and I live!

Zileans build should be focused on Ability Power, Cool Downs, Magic Penetration, And Speed.

MUST HAVES

Athene's Unholy Grail
This is without a doubt the most important item for Zilean to get. I love this item on mages in general but this thing WAS MADE FOR ZILEAN. Not only does it provide the cool downs, ability power, and magic Resistance that Zilean needs, but it also provides massive mana regeneration that allows Zilean to go bomb dropping all day every day.
This is the very first item you should get for Zilean for every and any game.

Zhonya's Hourglass
This is also a must have for Zilean. Not only does it provide massive ability power and a nice defense that Zilean needs, but its active will save his life just as much as Chronoshift. If you find that your going to die, but a teamate will to if you don't do something fast using Chronoshift on your teammate and then using Zhonya's Hourglass on yourself will save both of you life's.

Items To Consider

Spellthief's Edge
This is probably the best support item for Zilean. Not just because Zileans poke works well with Spellthief's Edge passive, but also the ability power, cool downs, and slow that you get when you upgrade it into Frost Queen's Claim is really attractive to Zilean and other AP poke champions.

Ancient Coin
Id take Spellthief's Edge over Ancient Coin any day. However I realize that most of us are men not gods when it comes to how well we can play Zilean. If you want to play a more passive lane with Zilean Ancient Coin may be for you. Also upgrading it to Talisman Of AscensionProvides max cool down if you also have Athene's Unholy Grail. And active for Talisman Of Ascension will make your speed god like.

Sightstone
A must have for any good support. You should get this after getting Athene's Unholy Grail. I don't say its a must have however because when I say must have I mean it in general. So mid lane Zilean would not need this; support Zilean however does!

Sorcerer's Shoes
Everyone needs to get some shoes and this is what I find overall the best on Zilean. Of course you may want to get different boots for different situations however.

Rabadon's Deathcap
A nice addition to any mage. Definitely get this if you are going mid and maybe for support. If your support get it if your team lacks much ability power or if you just want to nuke some noobs.

Banner of Command
Everyone seems to think this a troll item. However in the right hands its a not a bad item at all. It provides some nice ability power and cool downs! Also making the minions a bit better doesn't hurt. This is probably not a item for everyone, but I enjoy using it.

Void Staff
Only get this if you are against a really tank team and they have a lot of magic resist. Otherwise id say to pass on this item.

Guardian Angel
This is a troll item for zilean. If you want to make the enemy's team a living hell then take this. Otherwise id say avoid using this.
