Introduction

Nocturne, nowadays in season 5, is know as a pretty weak choice as a jungler. However fellow Nocturne players, with this guide we can rise up defeat those who look upon us as weak induvduals. We will make them fear us, when ironically, we are 'fearing' them. We will be looking at the rune and masteries, the items, his skills, spells, pros/cons, and some more advanced tactics. Below are the easy steps from people thinking as a walking nerf to a god of the jungle!!

Rune and Masteries

These runes and masteries will, in a famous quote from Mohammad Ali, help Nocturne 'move like a jet fighter, hit like a truck' or something along those line. Anyways 21,9,0-pretty standard champs like these. The offensive masteries give his auto-attacks a buffs, as well as his sustain and damage(in general). The defensive masteries give him health, more sustain and helps against incoming damage. The runes I brought, attack damage because he is auto-attack based as well as attack speed quints so he can attack faster. I the have armour seals to tank him up a bit an then cooldown reduction glyphs to he can use the abilities more often like him ult, which has quite a long cooldown of 150/125/100 in the 5.6 patch.

Item Builds

Item Sequence

Ranger's Trailblazer - Devourer 2250
Ravenous Hydra 3300
Mercury's Treads - Homeguard 1550
His starting items are pretty simple, the usual Hunter's Machete, health potions and warding totems. I go out and clear a few camps and coming back as soon as I have enough gold for the Ranger's Trailblazer and I buy it so I can clear camps more efficiently. I then pick up the enchantment Devourer's so that it can start stacking ASAP. Then I pick up the Ravenous Hydra so I can do extra splash damage and take down camps more easily. After all that, I finally take the Mercury's Treads boots so ganks can be faster. Then I get the Blade of the Ruined King and Youmuu's Ghostblade for all that sexy damages and life steals. Lastly I get the Randuin's Omen because it get Nocturne to last longer(insert inappropriate joke here) in team fights during the late game. There are other options there, for example if you want to troll around you can try the full damage build or the ganking build if you want to gank a lot for more kills(greedy). Naturally these are just guidelines and items should be used accordingly to how your team, and the enemy's team is doing. If your team is feeding(but not you) and it is up to you to carry the game, try rush Randuin's Omen and Blade of the Ruined King and skipping Youmuu's Ghostblade until later.

Abilities

For Nocturne's abilities, I prefer to put a point into my Duskbringer first. This is because it is the only move Nocturne has that does splash damage. After the Duskbringer I put a point in the Unspeakable Horror and then the Shroud of Darkness. Unspeakable Horror for the stun and Shroud of Darkness just so I have the spell shield for later. Once lv 6 I get my ultimate, Paranoia, so that my ganks are improved. I prefer to max out my Duskbringer first followed by my Unspeakable Horror and then the ult and finally the spell shield ( Shroud of Darkness). Strategies about this in a chapter below, somewhere. His ult is good because when using it, the whole enemy team will have reduced vision. If you use it to gank (for example) bot lane, the enemy top and mid laners will be much more alert and may retreat back to the safety of the turret. This give helps add to the pressure of all the lanes at the same time. Dispite not having much teamfight potential, Nocturne's ult does help by limiting the vision so enemies can see your retreating teammates.

Interesting Facts about moves

There are some interesting things you can do with Nocturne's move. For example, of your Duskbringer hits an invisible target one of two things can happen. The target may panick and move and the dust trail will follow them or they will remain stationary not showing their position that well. Dispite being able to tell where they are your duskbringer will not reveal opponents.

Interesting Fact: did you know that if you hit Lucian with your Duskbringer, he disappears. This affect is more obvious under Nocturne's ultimate.

Jungling

Jungling with Nocturne takes a certain amount of skill. This is because he is rather weak during early game. However if done well he can be a force to be reckoned with later. I prefer to start his with Ancient Krugs (smite), to get to lv 2. I then activate a health pot and move to the Brambleback(smite). After this you may be quite low so you should go to the Rift scuttlers so you are pick up some much needed health and a bit of exp. This also prevents an early dragon( if you are on blue team). Then move towards the Blue Sentinel side of the map, but take wolves on the way there. Then warp back and by the Ranger's Trailblazer. Once you take the Blue Sentinel(smite), kill the Gromp(smite) and then the rift scuttler. After this try a gank at a lane. Repeat the process, just skip out the part where it says buy Ranger's Trailblazer, you cant have more than one of those. Try not to invade with Nocturne, he might no be able to clear buffs fast enough.

Ganking

Ganks are relatively difficult with Nocturne before lv 6. Before lv 6 you should go initiate with your Duskbringer to get in and follow up with you Unspeakable Horror so that they are feared. Have your Shroud of Darkness on hand in case they throw skill shots at you. Once you hit 6, go in with your ult and they follow up with an Unspeakable Horror, while feared hit them with your Duskbringer. Before you ult, try activating your Shroud of Darkness so that any skill shots they immediately throw at you will be useless. If top, try the bush near the river. If bot lane try the tri-bush area so you can get in faster. If mid try coming from behind the enemy turret and fear them immediately so you can catch and get them by surprise.

Strategies

Since Nocturne doesn't do a lot of AOE damage you would think he would be completely useless in teamfights, but no. He has a very important role. To ELIMINATE the enemy ADC and other squishies. Because Nocturne's ult is long ranged, it can reach the ADCs that are hovering about behind the more tanky people. Once the ADC has been eliminated, your team has a higher chance to win since their highest damage character has been slain.
Another thing Nocturne can do is before the teamfight he can use his Duskbringer to slightly poke at the enemy team since the move can pass through enemy players.

Escaping

the good thing about Nocturne is that you can use all his move for retreating. For example, since his Duskbringer increases his speed he can use it to speed awy from enemies. Also his Unspeakable Horror is long ranged so that he can use that move on people who are in hot pursuit and really close to you, this mean that you will do damage as well as fear then and cause them to walk away. His ult will rush him forward quite a bit(to an enemy minion in front of him) but it is not reccomended because the cooldown is too long to waste it on minions.

Pro/Cons

With a hard champion like Nocturne, there are many pros and cons to him.

Pros
He has powerful ganks after lv6
His ult cause the enemy team blindness
He his fear also does damage
All his move can be used when running away
    Is good against squishies ADCs
Cons
    Has weak ganks early on
    Has barely any AOE damage
If invaded early can have weak late game

Final Comments

Before I go I wish to tell you something very important, 2 people have written this, one is me, who did all the writing and the other is my friend who helped with the runes and masteries. So I would like to say a big thanks to Jimmious(another guide writer) for helping me with this build. Please check out his guides (though they are no way near as good as mine) and give him your support(a hook or a heal, anything is fine).
