[Patch 9.12] How To- Mordekaiser Top (Reworked Edition)

By LighterDay
Introduction
Hello, ladies and gents, I am Lighter Day and this is my guide to playing the reworked Mordekaiser! This guide will go over the basics of what has changed with Mordekaiser as well as talk about how these changes impacted his in-game capability. The first thing we will talk about are his abilities and how they changed with his recent rework.
Mordekaiser's Abilities
Mordekaiser was severely reworked and, thus, he is not the same as he was before. Here will be the topic of Mordekaiser's new abilities. First thing to mention is that Mordekaiser no longer builds a passive shield for the damage he does, but he does get a shield that I will mention in a bit. Another thing to know is that, while the old Morde had to spend health to use abilities, this Morde does not have any cost for his abilities, but they do have rather higher cooldowns than before. Lastly, Mordekaiser no longer can steal the dragon's ghost like he could before. Now, let's go on to Mordekaiser's newest abilities as of Patch 9.12.

Passive- Darkness Rise: When Mordekaiser successfully damages an opponent with attacks or abilities 3 times in a row, Mordekaiser gains an AOE ability that damages those in the radius and gives Morde a boost of movement speed. This passive works with items like and . Building Rylai's first, though, will allow you to catch up to your enemy to do more damage.

Q- Obliterate: Mordekaiser slams his mace down and deals damage opponents caught in the area. Damage from Obliterate is increased if it's on a single enemy. Use Obliterate on waves in early game to help build up Mordekaiser's W, so you can quickly gain a shield and potential health.

W- Indestructible: Mordekaiser gains a white bar that grows from the damage Mordekaiser takes and deals. Activating W will grant Mordekaiser a shield from the bar. Activating W a second time will convert part of the shield into health. Indestructible heals for a good amount of the shield given, so if you build up enough, you can easily heal for enough to stay in lane and continue farming instead of recalling or wasting potions.

E- Death's Grasp: Passively, Mordekaiser' gains bonus magic penetration. Actively, Mordekaiser raises a hand from the ground in a path in front of him. Enemies caught are pulled towards Morde and damaged. Death's Grasp doesn't pull the enemy all the way towards you, just enough to bring them within Obliterate's range. Also, Death's Grasp can be used to slow down enemies who are chasing you, so it's also a great escape.

R- Realm of Death: Mordekaiser selects an enemy champion. Then, he and the target are teleported to another realm where the two fight in a 1v1. If Morde successfully kills the enemy while in ult, Morde gains his foe's stats until that person respawns. However, while in ult, both champions are resembled through two floating orbs: one blue and one red. This does not mean abilities will effect either, it just shows where the two champions are.
Early Game
Mordekaiser can create a presence if he's in a solo lane. His Q and E have a wide range and his passive gives him a special Sunfire Cape whenever he fights. However, try not to start fights until you get your W for the bonus shield. Also, Morde's Q has low damage in level 1, so unless it is just you and your opponent with no enemy minions around, avoid starting fights. Your Q is good for wave clearing, so use it for that early on. Building Rylai's first will give you the damage and health you need to start fights more against the enemy laner.
Mid/Late Game
As stated before, Mordekaiser works better in 1v1. His Q does more damage and his passive helps create an AOE field to damage your enemy. When mid game comes, be prepared for team fights. It is best to analyze the enemy team and pick out who the carry is exactly. Once you find out who the major threat is, use Realm of Death on the target. Even if you can't solo them, you still keep them away from your team. Realm of Death will always be a great separation to help your team, so remember that, even if you're feeding, if you can keep the carry away from your team, then that'll help more than you can imagine.
Conclusion
As Mordekaiser, you have to build a mixture of tank and AP for the team. You are the front liner for the team. There are two ways to keep the enemy from going in on your team: one is with Death's Grasp. This pulls any enemy caught in the path of the ability. Position yourself off to the side of your team and use this ability to try and pull away the enemy team. Another way is with Realm of Death, Morde's ultimate. While this is a single target ability, it can still work in splitting up the enemy team. However, always keep in mind if your team needs you because Realm of Death also separates you from your team. In team fights, it is best to target the carry as soon as the fight begins. Getting rid of the threat gives your team a chance to damage the enemy team. Mordekaiser is tough in early game, but once Mid game comes around, Mordekaiser starts to shine. I hope this guide helped you in learning of Mordekaiser, the Iron Revenant. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to mention them and best of luck to you on the Rift!
Frequent Questions

Q: Does Mordekaiser effect other abilities?

A: Mordekaiser's ult can effect the abilities of other champions in negative ways. Since Mordekaiser teleports him and an enemy into a 1v1, it is just them. No other abilities, no other champions, and no other minions are there. Any outside ability will be null and void for both Morde and his target.

Q: Are there any champions that can bypass Morde's ult?

A: No. No champion can join Morde in Realm of Death. If any champion is on Mordekaiser or his target such as a Yuumi, they are immediately expelled.

Q: What about global abilities like Soraka or Karthus?

A: Morde ult makes it a legit 1v1. Any champion outside does not have any effect those in Morde's ult.

Q: Are there ways to avoid a Mordekaiser ult?

A: Certain champions have abilities that can dodge Mordekaiser's ult if timed right and certain items can be a shield from Morde's ultimate. Also, it seems that if you targeted for a Morde ult, if you get into Fog of War or just out of the enemies vision, you can avoid Morde's ult altogether.
