Cool, but why Veigar as a tank support?
- AP (pretty obvious)
- Movement speed
- Lethality
- AD (was more of a troll pick than an actual attempt)
- And obviously Tank

Veigar is a mage champion that’s known for his Phenomenal Evil Power and Primordial Burst. He deals large amounts of damage with his abilities and stacks extremely well. He’s not very popular, so people usually don’t know how to properly counter him. He also has funny voice lines lol
|
While it may sound weird, playing Veigar as a tank support is probably one of the best ways to play him, at least in my personal experience, it is. His early game, while not the best, definitely isn’t bad. You can stop the enemy ADC from getting an early CS advantage by spamming your Event Horizon, this can also be used to keep the enemy support from getting their Spellthief's Edge upgraded quickly. His Mid game is pretty good, his stun lasts a long time and gives great engage, he does a pretty decent amount of damage for peel, and he’s difficult to kill. His late game is phenomenal, being practically immortal while also one-shotting anybody with under 2000 HP. If you follow my guide and get Locket of the Iron Solari, you can save allies by shielding them, which makes them not feed as much, but also appreciate you a lot more. |
Stacking your Phenomenal Evil Power is a lot more difficult opposed to if you were playing him in midlane or as an ADC, as well as the lack of gold, it’s almost impossible to get as much AP as you would in other lanes. Being unpopular is bad for the enemies, but it’s also bad for your teammates, a lot of the time they think you’re inting or don’t know how to properly play alongside you. On top of this, it’s way too easy to steal kills, which can result in a lot of toxicity from your team. And finally, since you’re a tank, you get targeted a lot compared to your other teammates. |

Relic Shield (Aggressive) COST: 400 GOLD |
Relic Shield is usually my go-to on this build. You can get some minion stacks and still give the gold to your ADC. Though, if your ADC has trouble getting CS, you might want to get Spellthief's Edge instead. It gives 5 ability power, 30 health, 25% base health regeneration, and 2 gold per 10 seconds. |
- Only use your Relic Shield when your ADC has a CS advantage, all you’ll do by taking CS when they’re behind is getting flamed and losing lane.
- When you take CS with Relic Shield, last hit the minions with Baleful Strike so you get a Phenomenal Evil Power stack.
Spellthief’s Edge (Defensive) COST: 400 GOLD |
While not my favorite, Spellthief's Edge is a good item. If your enemy bot laners have hard pressure and you have to play safe, this is a good item to have. It gives 8 ability power, 10 health, 50% base mana regeneration, and 2 gold per 10 seconds. |
Core Items
Locket of the Iron Solari is a must. It grants 200 HP, 30 armor, 30 magic resist, and 20 ability haste. It gives you a tanky boost, makes cooldowns quicker, and you take less damage. Stats aside, it’s Active ability grants yourself and nearby allies a 230-385 (based on ally level) shield that decays over a few seconds. This is really useful in grouped-up teamfights, as you can give everyone a shield, thus giving an advantage to your team. Dead Man's Plate should be your first non-mythic full item, it gives 300 HP, 45 armor, and 5% movement speed. While moving, you can build up to 40 bonus movement speed, your next attack discharges built up movement speed to deal up to 40 (+100% base attack damage) physical damage. In general, the movement speed can be really useful, but when you build it up, that extra movement can help Veigar land a cage, possibly giving your team an extra kill (or maybe 2) Force of Nature is the last core item, but not least. It has similar stats as Dead Man's Plate, 350 HP, 60 magic resist, and 5% movement speed. Unlike Dead Man's Plate, though, taking damage from abilities grants you 8 movement speed and 4 magic resist for 5 seconds, which can stack up to 5 times. While I doubt it’s passive will save your life, it’s still a really important item to have, especially if the enemy team is AP-heavy. |

RESOLVE
|
|
”Cannonball!” Tristana is one, if not the best ADC you can get on your team while playing Veigar. Her Rocket Jump syncs great with Veigar’s Event Horizon, she does copious damage, she can easily destroy towers with her Explosive Charge, and her Buster Shot makes great opportunity of Veigar’s Primordial Burst! Overall, it’s a blessing to have a Tristana as your ADC. |
|
”The hunt is on” Caitlyn is another great ADC to be blessed with. Her Yordle Snap Trap (ironic considering Veigar is a yordle) stunning the enemies synergizes amazingly with Veigar’s Event Horizon, you can basically get 5 whole seconds of CC on the enemies with that combo. Her long range also allows you to cage an enemy all the way across a lane, and Caitlyn can still get a kill or 2 from it. While not my personal favorite, you wouldn’t catch me dead complaining about someone selecting her on my team. |
|
”Four!” Similar to Caitlyn, Jhin’s Captive Audience syncs well with Veigar’s Event Horizon as you can get around 5 whole seconds of CC on the enemies. Jhin’s Curtain Call also goes great with Event Horizon: Veigar lands a cage on both enemy botlaners, Jhin uses his ultimate and gets 2 extra kills, it’s practically guaranteed! |
Threats
|
”ff15” Samira is basically the kiss of death with this build. Her Blade Whirl cancels your Primordial Burst and Baleful Strike, she can use her Wild Rush to slip out of your Event Horizon, possibly costing your team a kill, and her Inferno Trigger is so annoying. With its long range, copious damage, and lack of a cooldown, it’s basically an outplay button. With this, Samira is basically an immediate dodge when you see her in the enemies champ select. |
|
”Twitch + Sivir + Draven + Lucian” Akshan is definitely annoying and a huge threat, but he’s not nearly as bad as Samira. He’s more of an even fight, Veigar can outplay Akshan, Akshan can outplay Veigar. I was able to beat him as most champions, but it took me a while to figure out how to beat him as Veigar, so that’s what I’ll be telling you how to do. Akshan’s Heroic Swing is a double edged sword for him when it comes to fighting Veigar, on one hand, it does what it’s supposed to do, swings him across an area to make himself hard to hit, but similar to Draven and his axes, it’s also very easy to predict where he’s going, making getting an Event Horizon hit a pretty easy task. Akshan’s Going Rogue can be easily beaten by buying Oracle Lens. Since this is Tank Veigar, his Comeuppance isn’t a big deal unless you’re really low, but that can be solved by buying Locket of the Iron Solari. |

Family issues Morgana is pretty annoying to go against, her Dark Binding is the most annoying. It stuns you for about 3 seconds mid/late game, even building tank won’t save you from that if you’re in a team fight. Black Shield is also really annoying as Morgana can peacefully walk out of Event Horizon like it wasn’t even there, similar to Samira, this can cost your team a kill, which can be crucial early game. Other than that though, Morgana isn’t that hard to play against, as long as you dodge her Dark Binding and bait out her Black Shield, it’ll be just as easy as going against any other basic support. |
If I’m being honest, every level above 6 can be your choice, only levels 1-6 need to be specific for this build. A summary of what you should do though: Baleful Strike is practically useless as support, focus on Event Horizon and Dark Matter the most.
Thank you!
