Garen is pretty easy despite what people think. The only thing you have to be careful about is his q,which can easy be baited and juked,or shielded. Try to bait it,if not go for it with e,then all in.
Sion
You can take Sion on pretty easy too,he cant hit you because you have a lot more mobility than he does, and for him to hit you with spells you gotta stay still or be AFK. :)
Vladimir
Vladimir isn't a threat at the beginning because he is super squishy. Tho he can outsustain you if you make a bro lane,so dont do that, poke him and all in him every time he uses q on a minion. Or when he uses it on you, shield it then all in. When you have 6,bait his W with an all in without ult,his cd is 20 sec at least,so you go for all in when you get your spells back from cd because he wont have his w to dodge your wind slash or stop the trade. Be extra careful when he gets his lvl 9,because thats when he gets his powerspike. Run ignite if you feel like it.
Lissandra
Lissandra is a little more of a threat because she can poke you down with her q and stop your engage with w,then back of with e. She wont run out of mana so easy if she knows how to use passive.
Dr. Mundo
Mundo isnt that hard, all you have to do is run ignite and dodge his q. Run ignite.
Heimerdinger
Heimer is hard if you go ham. Dont. Just farm up you will be much more useful in team fights, and when you have big wave clear his turrets then all in.
Cho'Gath
Cho is kinda hard if he knows what he's doing,if he interrupts your knock up with his q you lose trade, and if he lands silence in middle of your combo. So try to dodge any of that and you can have a chance. Go ham on him before he becomes tanky.
Jarvan IV
Try to dodge his E+Q combo and you will win any trade. At lvl 1-3 he is stronger because of his passive he can keep you lower in small trades.
Jax
Try to save your W to stun him when he jumps on you with E. As soon as it expires,go all in. Dont engage first when you arent sure you can get out unstunned.
Lee Sin
Lee has very high stats at beginning,so he will be stronger if he lands everything on you. So when you juke his q go ham,but care.
Nasus
Nasus is easy if he isnt a Nasus main with +40 armor on runes. :O so everytime he goes for Q you punish him with combo. Later he will outscale you and everyone else,so as soon as he gets tanky you go on other lanes and snowball them so they can resist the Doga.
Swain
Swain isnt that hard considering your mobility. You pretty much can juke anything he trows, and you should really run Ignite in this matchup.
Zac
Zac that knows the thing is hard, because he is tanky and deals decent damage. Try to walk over his slime to deny his healing.
Xin Zhao
When Xin engages with e,stun him and walk away, wait for him to use his knock up on minions, then full ham. Not a hard lane if you know how he works.
Jayce
Jayce is harder, because he can poke you a lot,you have to be patient and wait for him to make a mistake, like when he switches to his range form, you can go ham because he cant use E+Q combo when you are in his face, and he cant switch to melee right away to deny the trade.
Kennen
Kennen is tough because he can stun you 3 times in few seconds when his ult is up along with passive. So its a pretty -who makes a mistake first- matchup. If you are inpatient you will lose. Try running Hexdrinker asap.
Nautilus
Nautilus is pretty solid counter to riven imo. He can root you in 3 ways, which is pretty painful for riven to handle. Especially his tankyness provides him a way to deal damage and not to take so much on the other hand. One proof of this is Dyrus beating the cr*p out of Albert in Ranked Soloq.
Gnar
A good gnar can keep his range and poke you down. This is for me favorite matchup,i like to pick gnar against riven, its a fun lane. A lot of gnars make mistake at beginning that you can use to your advantage, which is: they think they are tanky as hell as soon as they go Mega Gnar. Truth is they are pretty squishy still. So you can all in and just try to avoid spells,it isnt that hard if they arent full concentrated and if you are. Try to all in every time they are mini Gnar and in close range. Their E is on a big cd so use it every time his E is down.
Malphite
Malphite is hard in this new tanky meta. He deals tons of damage and takes much less than he should. I advise building life steal and brut first,so you can survive. Dont expect to kill a good Malph that doesnt do stupid things in lane. And be careful of ganks, because he will most likely let you push.
Ryze
Ryze even after nerfs can still root you and control the trades. He will trade whenever he feels like it,and you wont. He wont let you engage if he doesnt like it. He scales High late game,so its a pretty hard matchup. If he makes a mistake thats the only way to kill him.
Tryndamere
Tryndamere will just press right click and crit the hell out of you. You cant possibly win lane against him, especially trynda mains. The only way i see is if you all in when he doesnt have his rage. If he runs ignite and ghost you will lose it and dont expect anything else.
Volibear
Voli is tanky as hell and deals a lot of damage, his passive gives him a lot of hp regen, dont all in when his passive is up. Wait for ganks, and play passive, build Black Cleaver.
Rengar
He has a lot more sustain and base damage from abilities, so you will have to be careful. I max E then W in this matchup to prevent us from trading before i get a better powerspike at 6. Be careful of bushes,he will jump out a lot.
Olaf
Olaf is very hard, because he can catch his axes and trow them again and again, slowing you and dealing damgage. His ult provides him cc denying, and he has insane healing when he is low.
Irelia
If she is careful, and plays clever every trade, she will win. If she misses her stun and slows you,you win. Better nerf irelia.
Renekton
No way to beat croc at lane. But you will be more useful late game if he doesnt make you 0/5 until then. Remember, every rene can beat riven, you can only beat him if he does something stupid as stunning minions, using q on them before trade etc etc.
Maokai
Tanky champion with a good kit to counter your kit. He has a passive that outsustains you,he has q that cancels your knock up,he has w to not let you disengage or run from his ult. Hard lane if he doesnt play Maokai 3th time ever.
Darius
Darius is hard because of his broken passive and E. Even when you flash+E if he pressed E milisec before you will be pulled across half a map. If he reclessly uses his Q on minions or misses you,go in,but still be careful of his stacks. Build a little hp (black cleaver) to survive his Ult.
Rumble
Rumble has great damage, but rarely anyone knows how to play him. But for those who do,you have to be careful. Attack when he is overheated,or when he used up his Q on minions, but care because it has very low cooldown.
Yorick
Yorick can just poke poke poke and push you out of lane anytime. Not much you can do,try going to bushes and getting out only for farm, ask for ganks or if he spamms it a lot,all in him when he has cd.
Pantheon
Max E first then W,save W when he uses his E to interrupt it,save E to block his Q,and at 6 you will be stronger.
Trundle
His ult is like activating 5 botrks in a row,so be careful. He can also bite you which deals a lot of damage. He can block your path when you try to escape. Fortunatly its not so viable anymore to play him top.
Ekko
Ekko isnt hard at all,you just back off when he activates his W (you will see it and hear it,shadow will apear behind him) and dodge q and you will win. Very easy matchup, and a fun one.
Yasuo
Yasuo is easy if he isnt a Yasuo main. If he is,then its a skilled matchup, but still you have the Edge. Example is Shy vs Faker, both of them knowing the mechanics but still Riven won, because its riven. No excuse on losing this lane. You dont really have to dodge anything, you are much more powerful. Just juke the knock up and thats it.
Aatrox
Atrox is pretty strong pick on top but rarely played because he is not so useful late. He has a good lifesteal and damage,so it will be a skilled matchup.
Teemo
A good teemo is horror,a bad teemo is freelo for you. Block Q with E and all in in the process. Care for shrooms, buy pinks.
Shen
Shen in higher elo is a boring lane, based on farm only, because he cant burst you and you cant burst him. In lover elo i manage to burst every shen i play against when i smurf. You can pretty much try to all in after 6,because you get a better powerspike,he has no use of his ult on his own. Stun him when he tries to ult other lanes, keep him top and its all good.
Gangplank
New Gangplank is a little harder than the last one, this one is strong early if he is played right. But its rare. Care for barrels and block his Q with E.
Hello,Wind Slasher from EUNE here. Im a Diamond Riven player, and this is my guide. I play Riven for almost 2 years now,and i think i know about her everything there is to know. I hope you find what you are looking for in this guide, ill try to not forget the tiny details.
Runes
Runes
I personally use 4 rune pages for riven, but in this guide i present the one i use most of the time. It gives 10% cdr and masteries give 5% which is in total 15%,more than enough at start, right?
Items
Items
I explained everything in Item notes, but ill say something more about it here. You should start with dorans blade, one health pot, core items are the ones for cdr and hydra. Take Scimitar instead of GA as last item if you like to be a full ad machine that is immune to cc. XD You should rush Hexdrinker if you are up against Ap champion that can burst you down or poke you down. When you buy it you should finish it as last item.
NOTE FOR ALL BOOTS:
i usually take homeguards, but distortion is good when enemy isnt even close to your base.So its your choice.
Ranked Play
Ranked Play
In ranked i rarely take brut, most likely ill go for black cleaver, and go a bit tanky with it. And ill usually have about 200 cs at 20 mins, farm up and pick up kills. Try to tp to bot and make some plays, dont die a lot on lane, because riven doesnt fit the current meta, you will notice that there is much more red and yellow than green in champion matchups in this guide. She will likely be countered every time. So usually you will much more focus on farming than killing your laner, because you wont be able to (at least in high elo,in low you can do it because people make a lot of mistakes that cost them the upper edge they had with the certain champion). Here you can see how i build in ranked games, sometimes i build brut, but only sometimes.
Pros / Cons
Pros / Cons
Pros -High mobility -High outplay potential -Has Decent amount of CC -Has good combo of passive and lifesteal -Great burst if ahead -Great Snowball if ahead
Cons -Not fitting the current meta -Low HP regen -Can't return to game if behind -Low movement speed base -Squishy -Hard to engage in team fight without flash
Team Work
Team Work
As Riven, its all about team work. Riven can't win game by herself, whatever some low elo people say. If you are ahead with Riven, you can only win by either snowballing otherlanes that are behind (so you should roam a lot when you take first turret, and even before that you should try some TP plays on a ward behind enemy bot lane) or you should protect your carries in team fight, and one shot their carry that is out of position.
Unique Skills
Unique Skills
If you want to play Riven, you need to learn all about her. Which is not an easy and short task. In my opinion Riven is the most complexed champion in this game, because i haven't seen a champion that can do more than 36 types of combos. So there are a lot of combos, and a lot of Animation Canceling that you need to learn. You have it all on youtube, but ill save you the trouble and give you my own link of my tutorial. Animation Cancel And when you learn it this is how it should look like: How it should look like in the end
Farming
Farming
Avoid farming with your abilities when your laner is near. I often tend to punish every riven i face when i see her farming with Q for example. Save that for the enemy, unless you are in front of your turret and you have to farm like that.
Skill Sequence
Skill Sequence
Now about the skill sequence,i want to say to this for all that arent confident enough to max them like i do. First max Q then E,that is a pretty standard max order. If you feel confident enough and want to kill your laner asap, max like i do. And of course i pointed out when you should max E then W over Q then W (dangerous matchups).

Tell me how this works for you,and if you have any questions or things that bother you, feel free to ask. Although this may not fit your style, dont bother to point that out, because i am well aware that there are a lot of different playstyles, which also vary from elo to elo.. Thank you for your attention.
