Main Strategy
Out-shove your opponent by E+Q on the wave, back when really low in mana, purchase items, repeat. Try and poke your opponent simultaneously with auto-attacks that charge your Conqueror(rune), and try to get him with your E+Q combo.
QUICK INTRO
As a general idea, you need to play AGGRESSIVELY. Capitalize on your early spike attributed to the Magic Penetration. AfterShock helps your never ending trial by not letting you get punished significantly. Ganks can be averted more so than using the classic Phase Rush path.
Aftershock boasts a luxurious 30 second cooldown, while mainly giving you a heavy boost in Armor and Magic Resist. Your W is the only spell in Ryze's toolkit that enables you to be granted that tankyness, therefore you must use your W with care. When Aftershock is down, trades from a heavy damage dealer can take place, and more so from an enemy jungler. You won't have the PhaseRush movement speed enhancement thus your flash is in danger or even a meaningful, for early game Ryze, death. Using W for trades is NOT suggested, only if those trades are of a meaningful value or you are about to return to base. ALSO use your W[i/] quickly when you are trading heavily with your opponent in most cases, depends on if you are expecting a gank from the enemy jungler or not.

EARLY MANA MANAGEMENT
MANA RESERVOIR
For the laning phase a normal of at least 200 Mana in reserve is suggested.
SHOVING
Be REALY careful on using E + Q if the only thing you want is pushing the wave.
LAST HITTING
Try not to use abilities to farm but don't mark it out completely in every single situation.
GETTING BAITED INTO DEALING DAMAGE EARLY AND MANA'S STRENGH OF POTENTIAL
Sometimes the enemy lets you put some significant damage on him early on, and that by using your E to deteriorate that health bar. The problem is that Ryze's Mana is as significant to his early laning phase and presure as a health bar might be for other non-spamming mages or other midlaners in general. A health pot will definetely save the day for your enemy, but your corrupting potion(which is suggested as a first item) will never be able to back an early low mana bar. Usually the lane pressure that can be put just from a full Mana Ryze, without him being needed to use any significant amount of it in poking, is enough to get you an early minion/experience advantage as well as a ROAM potential. In addition to that, enemy junglers usually can't contest your point and click W(root)and Q's movement speed and shield, neither your AfterShock , but that won't be the case if your Mana reaches a crucial spot(about 100 Mana).
HOW TO POKE AND WHEN
Now, poking in lane is of course needed, don't be scared to unleash your adrenaline rushing combos, neither the well-known fast trades( E->Q)/(W->E->Q). But, and that's really important, never do these fast trades if you are not going to back to base and you don't have the potential for a full scale pursuit afterwards or at least a quick combo that might be able to kill him off. That goes for the meaningful trades as well, never waste Mana if that will put you in a situation where your Mana won't be enough to scare your enemy or maybe to follow up a gank.

MASTERING THE ART OF TELEPORTATION (ULTIMATE)
Classic strategies can take place with a classically coordination based ultimate.
-Baron power-plays (getting there fast as a team)
-Split pushing(like a teleport to go back to your team)
-Team fight escapes/engages(self-explanatory)
-Positioning tricks in a team fight/gank/objective(eg pushing as a team, getting a pick and then ulting on Baron or to split on a lane or inside a base etc)
AND MANY MORE SATISFYING STRATS CAN BE APPLIED
ON THE OTHER HAND
This ult can have a self-centered role. It can be a solo fight tool.
It can be used in ENGANGING, DISENGAGING, HUNTING DOWN.
Hunting down: After an enemy flash, a dash ability or worst case, your inability to follow, Ult can be used to catch him.
The optimal position to ult when he is close(can reach him if he follows any diagonal path) is a bit in from of him(200 units or so).
The optimal position to ult when he is a bit far(can't reach him if he follows any diagonal path) is exactly on him.
In the cases that you can reach him if he follows a certain path(s), be creative.
FUN TECH
You can teleport in between a slim wall, so u can teleport on either side depending on that dynamic situation.
CAUTION: IF STUNNED WHILE CHANNELING(2 seconds) YOUR ULT WILL STOP
