Sett-Guide From Noob Sett-Player! [Season 12 | Patch 12.2]

About Me
Hello, everyone!

I'm jmp_01_. I made this guide because I had too much free time and wanted to show you guys how much I know about Sett. I peaked Platinum I on the EUW server and I have 300k mastery points on Sett. You can find me on op.gg:
here.

My Discord is P.#4686. Feel free to add me.

You can join the Sett-Mains-Server here.

Sett's Patch-History + Patch Preview
You can find Sett's Patch-History: here.
Why should I play Sett?
"Why should I play Sett?"

There are many reasons why you should play Sett. He is flexible, has a lot of playmaking potental, can turn the tables in a teamfight and is easy and satisfying to play.
The best time to pick Sett is if the enemy team has a tankier frontline that scales good with HP like Sion or Cho'Gath - your Ultimate will do tons of damage to the backline and you automatically win the teamfight or even the game.
Pros and Cons
Before playing Sett you need to know what his strengths and weaknesses are.

Let's start with the Pros of playing Sett:
  • + He is flexible
  • + He has a lot of sustain
  • + He is a good teamfighter
  • + He is tanky
  • + He has good counter-engage
  • + He doesn't use Mana or Energy
  • + He has solid crowd-control
  • + He has tons of AoE damage
  • + He is easy to play
  • + He doesn't need a lot of gold to be useful
  • + He has a good early-game
  • + He has good peeling

Now let's continue with the Cons of playing Sett:
  • - He is short-ranged
  • - He is easily kited
  • - His damage is gutted by armor
  • - He is predictable
  • - He is easy to gank - no abilities to escape
  • - He has high cooldowns
  • - He doesn't really have consistent damage
  • - He has no farm safety
  • - He has no poke
  • - He falls off late-game
  • - He is often played in pro-play - explains his nerfs.
Items
In this Guide-Chapter I will explain the items that I buy and when to use them.

Preseason Note: Not much changed, they new items don't affect Sett's playstyle or builds in any way. Everything remains the same.

Mythic Items:

Divine Sunderer: Questionable item for Sett. The mythic passive doesn't do so much with the magic penetration since you don't deal magic damage but the armor penetration can be really nice. I didn't play the item that often but I still wouldn't build it when Goredrinker already exists. It's also receiving a nerf in Patch 11.17.

Iceborn Gauntlet: It's good if you are behind in gold and need to be tanky and/or already have enough damage in your team. The mythic passive is also really good.

Goredrinker: Good item into 3+ melee champions. It makes you much tankier than Stridebreaker as well.

Stridebreaker: Due to many recent nerfs, I personally don't think you should build this item anymore. The dash is removed, even though some base stats were buffed, it's still not worth to buy it.

Trinity Force: It's sad to see this item doesn't get buffed, it would be a good option on Sett but it's a scam for 3333 gold. If the item gets buffed, I will update it as soon as possible here.

Turbo Chemtank: It got changed although it's far better than before, you can definetly buy it.

Legendary Items:

Abyssal Mask: Good into AP-heavy enemy-comps. Not sure what to say due to recent changes to this item. But I still think it'll remain a good choice.

Anathema's Chains: Underrated, but good item. Especially when they have a fed carry or strong splitpusher you need to match in a sidelane. Can be built anytime after your first item if you have to.

Blade of the Ruined King: It's a good item if you want more dueling power, you'll definetly need it against something like Irelia or Fiora or if you want to kill tankier opponents with less armor. Also - never buy it past your first item.

Chempunk Chainsword: Cost-wise the better anti-heal item compared to Thornmail . But you usually don't have to finish it as second or third item, unless you play against champions with tons of healing like Aatrox, Fiora or Irelia.

Dead Man's Plate: Just like Stridebreaker . In my eyes it's gutted. Nerf after nerf. Not worth to buy it anymore. Just take Ghost at that point instead of Teleport if you want to have an alternative to it or wait for it get buffed (which probably won't happen at all because mobility is broken).

Death's Dance: Sadly, this item is not as broken as in season 10 anymore. Now it gives you only Armor and not Magic Resist. Just build it if you are far ahead and the enemy team is mostly AD.

Force of Nature: It's a bit like the Magic Resist version of Dead Man's Plate , but more cost-efficient. It's an alternative to Absyssal Mask . E.g if your Alistar Support already has Absyssal Mask , take Force of Nature .

Gargoyle Stoneplate: Great item, but only build it if the opponents don't have hard assassins like Kha'Zix or Rengar who can build Serpent's Fang .

Hullbreaker: Great item for splitting. It also got a small recent buff. If you are more of the solo-player or want to avoid aram-ing, this item is a great choice.

Maw of Malmortius: Into AP-heavy opponents (4 AP, 1 AD or even 5 AP). Be careful - it has the Lifeline-Passive, which means you won't be able to buy Sterak's Gage or Immortal Shieldbow .

Randuin's Omen: Great into AD-heavy opponents. Its Active reduces damage from incoming critical attacks and slows the opponents' movement speed as well. It's really good into Tryndamere and basically any AD-Carry like Caitlyn or Tristana.

Silvermere Dawn: I would only pick this item if the enemy has Mordekaiser to escape his Realm of Death or Malzahar to cleanse his Nether Grasp. No need to finish this as second or third item - Quicksilver Sash does more than enough.

Spirit Visage: Great item into AP-heavy opponents or if you have an enchanter like Lulu or Soraka that heal/shield you a lot. It also synergizes really well with Revitalize and Sterak's Gage .

Sterak's Gage: Great item into mixed damage. Build it when you need more survivability. Try not to use your Haymaker the same time as the passive procs. A lot of shielding gets lost and has no usage then.

Thornmail: Cost-wise the worse item compared to Chempunk Chainsword , but better in terms of defensive stats. Finish this item as third or fourth item. The 60% anti-heal will be more relevant then.

Titanic Hydra: Good for splitting due to its AoE damage and gives you 500 HP and usually around 20-40 AD depending on your build.

Warmog's Armor: I usually never build Warmog's Armor , because in my opinion there are many better options and it just gives you a lot raw HP and that's it. There is no usage for its Passive - Warmog's Heart in teamfights and you already heal a lot with your Passive - Pit Grit.

Wit's End: More aggressive Magic Resist option than Maw of Malmortious . It has the best usage on champions with many auto-attacks - so it's good for Sett. You can even rush it as first item against something like Mordekaiser Top and Diana Jungle.

Boots:

Boots of Swiftness: Mostly played on Sett Support against champions with slows like Ashe or Janna.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity: I usually never played them on Sett but it's often used on "Mathematically Correct Sett". It's an item build that focuses on his Haymaker-damage and -cooldown.

Mercury's Treads: You take Mercury's Treads into AP-heavy opponents. It also grants you 30% Tenacity. (Important: If you have Legend: Tenacity fully stacked, it won't be 60% total tenacity, it's going to be 51% instead).

Plated Steelcaps: You take those into AD-heavy opponents. It also grants you 12% reduced incoming damage from auto-attacks.
Runes
Now let's talk about runes and trees for Sett.

The Primary-Tree is: Precision
It includes:

Lethal Tempo: Insane rune now, much more effective than Conqueror and synergizes extremly well with him.

Conqueror: This is the most-used rune for Sett and many other bruisers. It grants you AD and healing in extended fights.

Fleet Footwork: Fleet Footwork is really good into ranged / heavy poke lanes. It's better than Conqueror because you won't be able to stack it ever. The healing that Doran's Shield, your passive Pit Grit and Second Wind provide you is insane because no other champion in the game has such poke resistance.

Triumph: The only choice for Sett because Overheal and Presence of Mind are just useless.

Legend: Tenacity: I take Legend: Tenacity almost always because there is so much crowd-control in the game, you won't be able to take Legend: Alacrity or Legend: Bloodline ever. Also Legend: Bloodline takes too long to stack so it's a no-go anyways.

Last Stand: The same with Triumph over Presence of Mind and Overheal - Cut Down and Coup de Grace are just useless on Sett.

The best Secondary-Tree (if you play Precision as Primary-Tree) for Sett is: Resolve.
It includes:

Bone Plating: Good against melee champions that do a burst of attacks. E.g Renekton and Jax.

Conditioning: Really good into scaling lanes or where Second Wind and Bone Plating aren't useful. E.g Kayle.

Demolish: Good in match-ups where you can walk up and hit the tower without being in danger.

Overgrowth: Good against tanks such as Ornn or Cho'Gath. Insane scaling combo with Conditioning but sometimes both runes are not possible.

Revitalize: Good in lane where you fight a lot in the early game. It grants you also extra-healing and -shielding, meaning it works perfectly well with Doran's Shield, Second Wind , Spirit Visage and if your Support is an Enchanter such as Soraka or Lulu.

Second Wind: Take Second Wind into poke lanes or champions that can easily get rid of your Bone Plating . E.g Teemo and Volibear.

Unflinching: Take this into teams with high crowd-control and slows such as Zilean, Leona, Nautilus and so on. You get tons of tenacity if you are low on health and it makes crowd-control-effects such as Stun or Blind much shorter. Tenacity doesn't reduce the length of supression and airborne.

Rune Shards:
Offense: +10% Attack Speed

Flex: +9 Adaptive Force (5,4 AD or 9 AP) diamond

Defense: +6 Armor or +8 Magic Resist (depending on the match-up)

Who to ban?
Patch 11.24, 11.25 and 12.1

I recommend to ban Gnar, Tahm Kench or Mordekaiser.
