Threats & Synergies
Ahri has great movility, so is easy for her to escape your ult and hard for you to evade his abilitys. Also, Ahri's Q has better range, she easyly can repel you too far.
In early game is easy send Akali to base or kill her, after level 6 is more complicated to face her but remember your range and play safe.
Sona has better range than Annie, you can harrass her with Q, her early game damage is not too strong and you can cure yourself for poke damage. Annie's ultimate is always a threat, but Sona's ultimate has better range and you can kill her before she is close.
Brand's skills are very strongs, full of damage, passive stun and burn. Be extremely defensive and try to evade every spell.
Cassiopeia's damage core is her poison. You perfectly counter that with your heal, Sona has better sustain in lane.
Diana's gap closer can make things a little annoying. You can deal with it and damage her, but her shield can absorb damage and your combos are not too strong because of that.
Fizz in early game can be managed, but after level 8 or 9 is always a threat. But if you wait to Fizz use his E to attack, you can delete him with one combo.
With the new actualization of Sona's Q Range, you can destroy Heimerdinger's turrets easily and control the push on the lane. Heimer's other skills are very predictables, so you can dodge and attack. Heimerdinger is very squishy, one just combo and goodbye Heimy.
Karma has better range, better movility and shielding. If she plays offensive you are lost.
Karthus needs sustain to stay alive in lane. You can harrass him every times you want. You have a similar range but Karthus doesn't have the autoattack plus. If you play close to your minions, his Q will deal you a bit of damage and you can heal it, is really not a problem.
Kassadin has a poor early game, but since he is level 6 better play under your turret. His movility and burst damage can destroy you, and if you are close to kill him then Kassadin escapes. Is complicated to face using lot of champions, Sona is not the best choice against him.
Before level 6, Katarina doesn't have the range to be a threat for you, you can farm in peace and poke and harras her. Katarina can deal you strong damage, but in order to kill you she needs very much previous poke. You can heal yourself to prevent it, and bait her to use her ultimate and then cancel it. The only thing I highly recommend against her is face her if your ultimate cooldown is ready.
Le Blanc is always hard to face. She can do tons of damage in short time and your possibilites of avoid that are not much. Be care.
Lissandra has good range, large sized gap closer (but predictable), mana sustain and damage. In any case, you can control her, but be careful and play safe.
Lux can complicate things if you are trapped by his Q. Her ultimate is very annoying and has a ridiculous cooldown, but you can dodge her skills and deal more damage with your Q+AA to harrass her. Lux is very squishy, if you see her with half or less of her health you can kill her easily.
Nidalee has a strong poke/harrass, but Sona is better doing that. The only thing you need to do is dodge her spear. Nidalee can cure herself, but your range (if you are hiding back your minions) and damage are better, in normal situations she can't farm in peace if Sona is in front.
Orianna has a powerful burst damage and better range than Sona.
Talon's nerf was too strong... He can damage strong anyway, but until level 6 his lane phase is very complicated.
Twisted Fate has sustain thanks to his blue card, if you try to approach, you will get stunned by his yellow card. His Q damage is powerful and Twisted Fate has a very long range.
Veigar's E is terribly hard to evade. Once you are trapped, you are history and you need to approach to make damage to him.
Vel' Koz has very long range, you can't do nothing but try to evade.
After Viktor's rework, he is very complicated to face. You need to approach in order to deal him damage, but if you are trapped by is W, things will be very difficult for you.
Xerath is worst than Vel' Koz. Is more difficult to dodge his abilities.
Yasuo is always complicated (except if you are Zilean). His wind wall can destroy your combos, his movility and his damage are really going to destroy you.
Zed is very annoying, can deal damage safe in distance, if he is close to you then you are dead, his ultimate makes him impossible to target and his price to pay: no mana costs.
Ziggs has good range, but predictable. You perfectly can stay close to him and harrass him.
The most effective counter to Zilean play is healing in lane and barrier or shield. Sona can do similar damage, but Zilean can't recovery except for his ultimate, once he used it, you have total advantage against him.
Zyra is always a lane bully. But Sona can do more damage in short time and Zyra is very squishy. One combo and goodbye Zyra.
I play in Latin America South server, since 3 months ago, so I'm pretty new in this LoL stuff.
Personally, I don't like closed structures, I always try to break the meta with new alternatives, trying to propose new viables posibilities.
In this case, I bring to you this Sona mid AP guide. My win rate with her is really not bad, my ELO is low yet (Silver 5), but I'm trying, I'm not losing anything doing this haha (well, time I guess)
Early game: You try to farm as much you can. Sona's last hits are not the best, but if you try with Zilean then you will love Sona. Try to control lane push, use skills to charge your passive and poke with Q+AA when is possible. I recommend highly to keep your passive in stage 2, if your jungler or enemy jungler is near you can use offensively or deffensively your passive autoattack with E for slow your target. I always recommend buy in the first back to base a pink ward, then put it in one side of your lane an keep warded the other side with your trinket. In level 6 or 7 any objective can perish with R+Q+AA+Ignite.
Mid and late game: Remember that your Q has an aura, use it to destroy turrets and charge your passive to strike more powerful hits.
Sona at this points must have Lich Bane at least, with this item Q+AA will deal more than half of the life to a squishy enemy.
Team Fights: Sona has a very powerful ultimate, look for the moment to strike with it. Focus an objective and delete it with Q+AA after your ultimate (ignite if is necesary), use W to heal allies and E to escape/chase. In situations, you can charge your passive with W to save an ally for a powerful damage or with E to slow an enemy in order to escape or chase.
Sona in mid/late game is semi support. Your AP is strong, so your primary function is deal damage. But you have a impressive utility for your team, don't waste it. Other champions goes well with this play functionality, Zilean or Karma are good choices for mid laners with strong early game and mid/late game in semi support function.
Well, GG and stay strong. Bye!
