aatrox is incredibly strong with his dirk powerspike, so try to avoid getting hit in the crit area of his q's. he can dash while q'ing, so try to run at him if he q1+e or q2+e and run away if he q3+e to avoid the sweet spots. always get on top of him with q3/e when fighting as he will be forced to either q1+e backwards, creating a gap between u and he can't follow up with q2+e or q3+e. this is the ideal point to all-in but keep in mind he will still have his q3. run out of his w with e whenever u can, if necessary. keep poking him until u force his ult out. keep him locked up in his ult so he cant get healing off, and use ignite (if applicable). rush executioner's otherwise
Akali
not as bad of a match up in top as it is in mid bc of the lack of roams, and top akalis usually take conq/fleet which reduces her dmg, if only slightly. this is still a skill match up so respect her q+aa poke dmg and level 6 spike. trade with her when she misses q/e or is low on energy, but keep in mind she might have shroud (w) up, which gives her energy back. try to ignite her (if applicable) before she pops w as it gives vision and u can still fight her in there. she will try to e u if u run at her with e, so be mindful if she recasts it after u recast ur e. there is a shuriken over ur head that changes animation to crossed blades when she recasts. if you want to fight her, wait for it to appear before q3/r, but keep in mind her cd's as if she has ult or shroud, this could **** u over instead
Akshan
same match up as mid lane but a little less annoying as he cant roam to get extra gold from kills/revives. respect his passive/pta and poke him when he aa's a minion or throws a q. he gains ms from 1 auto and a shield from passive proc (3 aa's), so they will kite u with 1 aa and poke with multiple aa. top has more safety spots to flash away to/from so its slightly less punishing to make a mistake here as well as bushes to hide from passive/pta procs. freeze against him early and get ur jg to spam gank him 2-3 times
Camille
this would be in extreme if the camille is extremely good and takes flash, but majority take tp/ignite and play for grasp stacks, all-in, and safety. moving on, camille is very mobile as well as an excellent diver with true dmg, armor reduction, a stun, a slow, an unescapable ult, and a shield on-dmg proc. try to trade her when her passive is not up as she will just mitigate dmg with it. avoid the negative space of her w since it both slows and reduces armor. her q1 deals ad, and she has two q2's: one that deals additional ad and one that deals true dmg. to know the difference, her ad q2 looks exactly like her q1 while her td q2 makes her backflip. there is a sound cue for her true q2 and it sounds like a laser, so avoid engaging with her if u hear that. make her waste it on a minion or miss the window. her e is easy to dodge as u can use e urself, however, it is also an escape tool, so if she's low, try to intercept it with ur body (tho u will be stunned be careful) or q3/r her to lock her in the same spot. she can follow ur q3/flash with her ult. she CAN follow, even if u ult or recast e first. u cannot r or e-recast if she ults first, tho, so try to build up q3 or prepare to flash/r when it ends if u cannot comfortably fight her. try to build armor shred items as early as possible against her as they usually take grasp, overgrowth, conditioning and become quite tanky in addition to items like divine/dd/hydra
Cho'Gath
with the introduction of heartsteel, cho has become a lot tankier than before but he is still the same cho. build armor shred items early to keep him down and prevent him from stacking hp/armor. his r-execute window is a lot earlier now due to more hp being gained, so be careful when fighting him if u do not have good sustain. during lane phase, constantly move as his q's are easy to dodge as once u see his foot slam down, u can easily adjust ur cursor to where u should dodge. his w silences, so try to preemptively w to mitigate any dmg u take and cant dish back due to ur spells/summoner's/items silenced. his e gives him vertical projectiles so be mindful when standing near the minions in front of him. he is very immobile so use ur mobility to ur advantage. he uses mana and his spells cost qutie a bit, so consistently trade him to make him use his spells back at u
Darius
darius is easily kiteable when his grab (e) is on cd. due to this, they typically take ghost to run u down and use w to slow u. every attack of his stacks bleed, which deal true dmg, and at max stacks, his ult deals the most dmg, which is also true. avoid long trades with him, especially out of e as he can easily grab u or flash/ghost on u. short trades go a long way as if u consistently dodge the outer ring of his q, he will remain at low hp. respect his e grab range as it is actually pretty big, and he can grab u over or out of walls if u use q3 (not r tho u are unstoppable)
Dr. Mundo
another champ that has become extremely tanky due to heartsteel, but during laning phase, he is not that much of the late game threat that he can become. yone is one of the few champs that can consistently get rid of his passive, and once off, u cannot reduce the duration of airborne. it's a lot easier to trade then as u can get more hits in and less hits on u as ur q3 will actually knock him up. stand behind minions when cs'ing but keep in mind his e goes through minions. he cannot move while e'ing so try to dodge and poke him while he's locked in anim. his w is an aoe field that deals bonus dmg at the end, so be careful in prolonged fights while he has that up. ignite him (if applicable) when he r's as he gains hp and hp regen. otherwise rush executioner's
Fiora
trading with her feels useless as she has easy means of regaining hp, whether thru d shield, second wind, vital proc, or grasp proc, or a combination of all. consistently walk out of her passive range to reset the vital until its in an unfavorable spot. counter-poke when she goes in for a q by preemptively w'ing to mitigate dmg and following up with a q (+ aa). she can parry ur q3/r which can stun u (not r tho, u are unstoppable) and allow her potentially to ult u, so try to bait it out before u engage on her by getting on top of her with q3 up. if she doesnt parry, simply wait out the window and engage with q1. consistently trade her with her w on cd as u can fit in extra hits if u hit ur q3. if she ults u, try to get against a wall so she can't hit that vital
Gangplank
first-strike gangplank is really annoying to fight against as he will almost always have a gold lead on u due to easily proc'ing it with his point-and-click q. there is no way to dodge it so try to preemptively w him or minions to mitigate some dmg with ur shield. he can w (cleanse) ur q3/r immobilization as well as give him some hp back, so be careful when fighting him if ur both low as u may die instead. his barrels can be chained, and they will usually put one around cs so if u try to walk up, they will put another and set them off. they are his main source of dmg, but u can bait them out with e/e-recast or simply step to the side in e (since it gives more ms) when he goes to set them off. his ult is global, and they will usually use it to help with a cross-map fight. tho be careful when fighting him in lane at a disadvantage as it's a large aoe that deals magic dmg and slows anyone in the field, try to get out of it with q3 or r/flash if absolutely necessary. gp's rush essence reaver and crit cloaks, so respect those item spikes and rush healing items (sceptre, pots) to keep u healthy in early lane
Garen
similar to darius in how kiteable they are, but garen is a little trickier as his ms scales with atk spd and his q gives him ms as well. his q silences, so try to bait it out of him before engaging by forcing him to use it on a minion or miss the window. when all-inning, it's sometimes best to ignore ur e checkmark (assuming u use e) unless u know his w is down as his it gives him armor and mr, which might give him just enough to survive. it scales with every enemy unit he kills, so dont let him cs for free. his passive gives him health regen, so consistently poke him. he can stack conq and any other on-dmg effect with his e very easily, so avoid getting hit by that when fighting him. his ult deals true dmg so avoid him when below half health, even if ur under tower. u win all-in's whenever u have shieldbow up as it will negate some or at the very least enough dmg from his ult, allowing u to heal thru to live and get away or live and kill him. majority of them take ignite so dont get too cocky
Gnar
gnar is really good at kiting immobile champs with his baby form and punishing them with his mega form. though yone is incredibly mobile, gnar's passive proc slows u and majority of them take fleet, so he will more often than not be faster than u. get on top of him when u want to trade and stay on top of him by weaving in spells/aa's while moving with him. his q is a boomerang he must catch to receive a reduced cd that can proc his passive on top of his aa. his e is a jump, becoming a double jump when landing on enemy units. a good gnar will e to u when turning into mega gnar to get on top of u and keep u locked up, so respect his mega gnar bar when it's above 80%, especially if u are weaker than him. mega gnar gains hp and his q changes to a rock that slows, w to a vertical skill shot that stuns, and his e to a single jump that deals dmg on any enemy unit he lands on. his ult is only available in mega gnar, which throws enemy units to a selected direction, stunning them if hit against terrain. avoid fighting mega gnar near walls. in this form, he is easily kiteable and his animations are slow, which allows u to skirt around him
Gragas
gragas is fairly mobile with his dash-stun (e) and has hard cc (airbone) with his ult, which when paired together can keep u locked up for a long time, especially if they go ap and take everfrost. when diving him, if u miss ur q3 or r, disengage as if he has e or ult up, u might eat too many shots before u can kill him. in lane, try to bait out his e with ur q3 or e when going for trades. he gains dmg reduction while in w animation and bonus dmg on his next auto, so try to make him waste that auto on a minion and avoid dmg'ing him while he's in anim. his barrels are his main source of poke, and they work a lot like lux's e, so try to consistently move around to adjust ur cursor to dodge, or even use ur e. u can dodge his ult fairly easily with q3/r/e/e-recast before ever needing to flash. he is very skillshot based (except w) so use ur mobility to ur advantage. buying a mantle early will go a long way or even spectral/mercs as his poke dmg/e stun trade start to build up
Gwen
as a melee champ, "gwen is immune" is not that annoying to see considering if u walk in or e into her mist, u can easily q3/r her. she gains armor and mr, so like garen, it's best to sometimes ignore ur e checkmark unless u know her w is down as it might give her just enough to survive. respect her at 4 stacks as she can easily q+e at u, and since it deals true dmg, no amount of mr can reduce that. u can preemptively w to mitigate some dmg tho. her e gives her a dash that gives her atk spd, converts her aa to ap, cd reduction for every enemy unit hit by a %age, and allows her to go over walls. her ult has been buffed so there is only a 1s delay between each cast, and it still slows. avoid running in a straight line. she is strongest mid-late, but ur stronger than her at all stages of the game, assuming u stay ahead
Heimerdinger
his turrets are very annoying as it prevents u from cs'ing healthily and chasing him into bushes is dangerous. however, they are easy to take out with q3+aa and they give 5g. it doesnt seem much in the moment, but if u consistently take them out, the gold stacks up. his w and e empower his turrets's attacks on the enemy unit they hit, so try to avoid being hit by them. they're all skill shots but can go thru minions, so avoid standing too close to them and consistently move or bait with e. like karma, his ult empowers his spells, his q a large turret, his w a longer, stronger, and wider barrage, and his e a double bounce. early laning phase is annoying as the poke builds up, so a refillable and a mantle/spectral early will go a long way. he is hard to trade with as they mostly let their turrets do all the work, allowing them to play far back, but consistently destroy his turrets. when fighting, get on top of him, and keep him locked up so he cant place more down or stun u with e
Illaoi
a very annoying matchup for not just yone but any melee top laner. her passive creates tentacles in the lane which can be destroyed with 2 aa's. try to get rid of these as often as possible as they slam down after she lands a spell or in her tentacle realm (e). also they give 5g each. her q goes through minions, but it is a slow animation and a vertical line, so it is quite easy to side step or bait out. her w allows her to jump a short distance to an enemy unit. her e is a skill shot that pulls the soul out of a champ, allowing her to dmg it. if u leave the ring or if she 'kills' it, u will play a mini-game of dodging tentacles until it's over. a lot of illaois will run away to avoid being poked when they miss their e, so get on top of her with (e+)q3 gap close. be mindful of when she has it up as if u q3/r/e forward and there is no ally unit in front of u, she will land it. they will typically (counter-)poke with w as its the shortest anim if u walk up/q3 up to cs, and if they try to q as well, skirt around her and poke her back. dont fight her in her ult unless u have ignite or executioner's as even if she's low, she might regain enough health to kill u or force a bad recall on u
Irelia
irelia is not a hard fight unless the player knows what they're doing. her q resets only after killing an enemy unit with it, and it (+ w) gives her a passive stack. avoid fighting her with her stacks full but do poke her when she goes to q a minion. she's locked in animation and typically cant strike back, so u can either get her low by consistently doing this and force a bad recall or at the very least force her to burn her pots/summoners. be mindful of her stun (e) as they typically put it behind them then behind u for max distance. try to stay out of range to force her to recast or miss the window. when she lands her e or r, she can q onto the afflicted unit and it will reset, like diana's q+e. her r is a skillshot, making it pretty easy to dodge with q3 or e. when landed, it slows u and prevents u from aa immediately. they typically rush bork and tabs so try to match her 1v1 potential by building bork first urself and picking up an executioner's. treat her like yasuo and dont fight her on a stacked wave unless u have means of keeping her cc'd and quickly bursted down
Jax
his e dodges on-hit attacks (yone's q, w and aa) as well as stuns at the very end of it. it can be held or recasted early, so always keep ur distance. u can use q3/e, and if absolutely necessary, r/flash to get away before or after he q's onto u, if at all. as a mana champ, he can comfortably build frozen heart, and with the re-introduction of shojin, his cd's become incredibly short. he can q to an ally unit (including wards), which forces u to have the best positioning at all times, especially with ur e, as he can easily engage or disengage. his r gives him armor/mr and his passive gives him stacks for every aa, which can be empowered even further with w. jax is easy to poke but hard to fight as once he burns his e, u can land ur q/w/aa. he strikes back harder due to his passive, w, and r so short trades and landing ur q3 is essential. he typically starts with corrupting pots and rushes bork, so look to get an early executioner's (or even bramble), bring ignite, or match his 1v1 potential with bork first urself, or a combination of all. he is a mana champ, so use that to ur advantage and fight him when he's low on it. dont let him freeze against u and avoid letting him hit ur tower as his w resets on structures
Jayce
good jayces can make this match up an even threat, especially since they typically take first-strike and build extremely cheap but good items. yone outscales tho so u will feel far better in mid-late game. he's annoying early if nothing else as he can choose between ranged or melee, and they typically cs in ranged form and poke with an accelerated q (e+q) and sometimes followed up with a triple aa (w). trading can be quite difficult as they typically switch to melee form to counter-poke with q, w before knocking u away with e, getting the final hit (most of the time) and winning the trade. stay behind minions to avoid his accelerated e+q in ranged form but not too close as it does splash dmg
Kayle
pre-level 6 kayle will play safe, so be aggressive and zone her off cs from even level 1. her level 1 is actually pretty strong with lethal tempo, but u will win if u take lt urself. she outscales u late game so dont let her get a free lane to reach that point. good kayles will just soak up exp instead of trying to fight for cs pre-level 6, so freeze against her early. even good kayles will get antsy for gold, so take those opportunities to poke them or even all-in them. her q slows and reduces armor/mr and her w heals her (and a nearby ally) while increasing her (and their) ms. on top of lt, this allows her to kite easily, so try to save ur gap closers for when she burns either or both of these. her r makes her or an ally invulnerable while also dealing magic dmg to enemy units in its aoe. in lane, avoid diving her or an ally she's with if she has this up as even tho she doesnt have cc, u still might waste an ult or a summoner's. and if shes with someone that does, u might die. she is a mana champ and her q, w, r cost a lot, so constantly force her to use those spells. they more often than not take tp for mid-late game sidelaning, and even tho it would be easier to shut her down earlier with ignite, take tp to constantly match her. ad kayle is not that great at all stages of the game but ap kayle is one of the best champs post level 16. it hurts a lot, so a spirit visage, wit's end, or even fon, if absolutely necessary, will help u out. regardless of lv 16, she's still extremely squishy and u have q3, e, r, flash to get on top of her and not allow her to kite u
Kennen
kennen is a pretty even matchup for yone because he's ap ranged, which makes it a little difficult for yone to comfortably lane due to constant poke and stun. kennen is an energy champ, so even if he's low on it, he has means of regaining it. u should still engage on him when it's low as he won't have spells up and his aa are ad and won't do more dmg than ur aa (and spells). an early mantle and refillable will help u withstand his poke a lot better. he's fairly easy to trade as he has criteria to meet to stun, which if u engage with e, u can "dodge" it by recasting early (ur main body will still be stunned). his r can stun too, though he typically uses this in team fights. he is a great team fighter due to this (+ zhonya's) which is why they usually take tp, so take it as well to match. his r provides only one instance of cc, though it's long, so unflinching or even mercs is ideal against him.
Kled
kled has two forms: mounted and dismounted. mounted is when he is strongest as his q is like leblanc's e, only shorter and can go thru minions. unlike leblanc, the circle gets smaller, which allows u to get out of it quicker, but the smaller the circle is, the easier it is for him to keep u in it with e. at this point, he will combo u, and if ur low, he may kill u as he deals % max health dmg mounted. dont be conservative with ur q3/r/e/e-recast/flash. kled's can comfortably dive u when on skaarl due to dismount making him untargetable for a brief second (like yi's q or elise's spider e). exhaust is the best summoner's to take against him over tp/ignite as when he's dismounted, his skaarl bar regenerates for every on-dmg ability against an enemy unit. exhaust reduces dmg dealt, thus lowering the stacks gained for him to re-mount. only on skaarl does he deal % max health dmg, so if ur low and that bar is over 80%, dont fight him as when he re-mounts, his hp is once again combined with skaarl's
K'Sante
k'sante is strong mid-late game as he gets incredibly tanky, he's very mobile, and he has consistent displacement. early on, he's fairly weak as he doesn't have cd reduction to stay on top of u, so winning trades and avoiding his q3 is fairly easy. he must land q1 to chain them to q3 unlike yone, but if he lands a q, he also gains an empowered aa, so avoid staying in range and make him waste it on a minion before re-engaging. his w makes him unstoppable, so avoid q3/r'ing him when he does this as he won't be cc'd, tho he will still take dmg. his kit is similar to riven in the sense has 3 q's, the last a knock up, a shield+dash, and an ult that increases his ad on his spells. his ult, if knocking u against a wall, sends u thru it and does additional dmg; otherwise, he gets behind u. he loses a threshold of his hp and resistances but he gains omnivamp and ad and becomes manaless, so keep in mind he might be a harder fight at this point than u think
Lillia
lillia is very annoying but very easy to kill when ur a mobile champ. she's extremely fast, which makes it somewhat difficult to hit ur q3 or r. instead of trying to engage with either, get on top of her before using those spells. respect her burn damage if she builds liandry's, but lillia top typically takes riftmaker and builds tankier. in the case she builds that way (usually frozen heart), just stack atk spd with bork, berserker's, and wit's end. treat her q like u do darius, but u should run at her rather than away because unlike darius, she's fast, and will be able to get off her outer ring (unless she has no stacks). her w is easy to dodge as u can use q3 or e, tho they typically only use this if ur asleep or locked in anim. be careful of her ball as the aoe spreads when it hits a minion, so dont stand too close to them. if she ults u, try to q3 or r away, and if u can hit either (or both) on her, do so at the end so she's airborned for the duration of sleep. otherwise, flash away (if applicable) or e away as far as possible. be mindful with e as if ur low, when u recast, she can easily kill u.
Malphite
second wind is not worth taking, and perhaps bone plating instead is for when he combos u with r, but malphite is more annoying than an actual counter as opposed to what other guides say. malphite is not a champ without his r, and his q-poke is nothing more than annoying, especially if u have d shield to passively heal and sceptre to heal off minions/him. his q-poke does take a lot of mana, so watch his mana bar and engage with him when he has little to none. it'll be difficult to counter-poke as his q is not only point and click but gives him ms, so try to rush tier 2's against him to give u enough to at least get a few hits on him. they like to rush frozen heart, so mercs is not worth the build. grab as much atk spd as u can and mantle/negatron. the full spirit visage/fon is not worth it against him unless he goes straight ap
Mordekaiser
mordekaiser is really scary for jungler's, but not really the enemy laner. yone is quite good against him because u have means of dodging his only real combo (e+q) and in his realm, u have the mobility too despite the boundaries. try to engage with him when his w is down as he has no way to shield or heal himself and will be forced to soak up any damage. keep in mind his cd's, especially his ult because if u ever try to dive him and u get ulted, ur ****ed. try to only ask for ganks pre-6 or when his ult is down as it can **** over u or ur jungler if he plays it right. he is ap, so try to look to build mantle/negatron early and spirit visage later (fon if absolutely necessary)
Nasus
nasus is very passive and not a difficult match up until mid-late game where he has more items and stacks. pre-level 6, they will play very safe and only look to freeze and farm. instead, u should freeze and zone him off cs by being aggressive and poking consistently whenever they walk up. it's hard to fight him as he has one of the best slows in the game (w), and they will either use this to engage (solo or with their jg) or disengage. yone does have q3/e/r to negate the speed by instantly gap closing, but if they take ghost or flash, it can be difficult or just impossible to catch up or run away. his e reduces armor and does magic dmg, so avoid fighting him in the field or with the debuff lingering. his r increases his hp, hp regen, and ad, so if u want to fight him like this, use ignite (if applicable) or rush executioner's. they typically build frozen heart, so stack atk spd. tabs is not worth the purchase due to this, and mortal/bork/wit's end will help a lot
Olaf
olaf used to be even, but with his recent buffs, he is a pretty tough matchup for yone. his q reduces armor and slows, which is really annoying as u dont have a tenacity rune nor swifties to handle the slow. his w gives him a shield, which can be frustrating when he's 1 hp and all u need is 1 aa/q and he pops it and u die instead. his e deals a lot of damage, especially when paired with his q (assuming he didnt miss). he can pick up his axe and re-throw it, so try not to let him just casually take it. he is a mana champ, so use that to ur advantage. try to q3 + r him before he pops ult because one or the other or even both will be useless against him and u wont be able to dish out as much damage as possible, and u could potentially die. u outscale, so dont let him get ahead. play smart and dodge his q's. if he then uses w or e on minions, that is ur time to trade
Ornn
ornn is a really easy match up for u but respect his damage. he is a mana champ, but he conserves it pretty well as he will only use his pillar to poke and not engage further unless he knows u have cd's/no flash. he has hard cc (airbone) both with his dash and ult, so if u see his pillar or ur against a wall, be mindful of his dash, and always be mindful of his ult. he has a move where he becomes unstoppable, so refrain from q3'ing or r'ing when he does that. he builds in lane, so make sure u freeze so that he doesnt have the chance to build up gold and gain item advantage over u and keep u in lane. back every single time u have enough gold and can crash the wave. and they all typically rush bramble against champs like yone, so if u have no items or only a sceptre, respect that item. there's no need for counter-building as it's not his damage that's worrisome, it's his tankiness so rush bork
Pantheon
pantheon is a mean early game champ, but u outscale so hard, it doesnt really matter what happens. yone is an assassin, which pantheons are great at shutting down, but he is also a skirmisher. he has amazing 1v1 potential, and pantheon has 1 combo. when he blows it, if u are not below 40% hp, fight him. u will win, meaning he dies or u force a bad recall. respect him in team fights as even if u live through his combo, his instance of cc and burst can help his team jump on u and kill u. he's not scary at all in lane, but play smart from level 3-6 as ur trades will be even. post level 6, u win as long as u play smart and dont get overconfident. try to follow his ults with tp if necessary, otherwise get **** done by taking plates, tower itself, rift herald, enemy jg camps, or roaming/counter-roaming to mid
Poppy
poppy is another anti-assassin, but unlike pantheon, she scales pretty well, especially when taking dark harvest. tho, most, if not all, top poppy's take grasp. dont not q3 or flash with her w up, u will get stunned, and if u have no other means of escape, u will probably die unless u can 1v1 and win. u can e-recast or r away, however, iirc u will be stunned after cast time. stay away from walls as she can charge u into them and stun u. she's a pretty tough matchup because she's anti-assassin, and 90% of poppy's will treat u as such. remember, yone is also a skirmisher, u will have the dmg and sustain to fight her for a prolonged amount of time. they build quite tanky, and their damage comes from dark harvest (if applicable) or out-sustain. when building shieldbow, bork and any other armor shred item is essential. otherwise, eclipse, or even kraken, actually goes extremely well against poppy. u can proc the shield easily (on top of the shield from ur w) which helps u mitigate a lot of the dmg she dishes out and provides the survivability that u usually get from shieldbow. kraken is self-explanatory, she's a tank. respect her in team fights and try to skirt around her if u have another frontline, especially if u have no other assassin. if u have another assassin, keep her on u so they can deal with backline
Quinn
second wind should be taken here along with d shield since she pokes a lot and if u q3 towards her or e, she'll just e and get off a few aa's or just run away. post-6, she will attack u a lot more rather than just poking. quinn is more annoying than good, so just respect her poke in the early game and only go for trades if u know u can hit ur spells and dish out more than she can. dont try to cheese her unless her w (ashe's hawk shot but in a wide circle) is down, and avoid letting her hit u if she hits u with valor. it marks u as well as near-sights u, which makes fighting her difficult and her dmg slightly stronger. u can avoid this by hiding behind minions. always ping when she's missing post-6 because quinn's like to roam with all that speed. if u can match her roam with tp, do so if necessary. otherwise, take the opportunity of her being out of lane to get **** done, as in taking plates, tower itself, rift herald, enemy jg camps, or roaming/counter-roaming to mid
Renekton
a tough match up for yone in the early game as renekton is super mobile (e) with a really good stun (w). most renektons take pta and rush bork, which gives him amazing 1v1 potential. try not to stand too close to minions as if he e's through an enemy unit, he can recast it. respect his fury bar and don't engage if he has a full bar with w up. his r gives him health, more ad, and creates an aoe around him like morde passive, so if u want to fight him, ignite him (if applicable). otherwise, rush executioner's and match his atk spd/1v1 potential by building bork first urself. their mythic option is typically prowler's, however into tankier teams, they sometimes go gore
Riven
her cd's become extremely short mid-late game but in early, her q is 5s with gore/lucidity. a lot of rivens like to wait in between their q's to chain them after q3 (knock up) so track her animations and know when she has q3 up before u engage. her w also stuns but its a relatively short aoe so if u engage on her, keep some distance. rivens go for short trades, so try to preemptively w to mitigate dmg and poke back with q+aa or q3+aa(+q). she can easily dodge ur q3's or r's with her q's and e so either get on top of her or engage with either (or both) when she has cds. her r2 sends out a shockwave upon recast so avoid running in a straight line. if ur low, it deals more dmg based on % missing hp so even if u think ur safe from her, just keep running
and ensure ur completely safe before backing. rivens are very aggressive but take advantage of the times they cant be when they have cd's. try to keep her locked up with q3+r so she cant get a w(+gore) off and her q stack goes on cd
Rumble
treat rumble like u would a viktor. his q is his main source of damage while his e is his poke. be mindful of his heat metre as when hes over 50%, he gains bonus damage and at 100%, he gains bonus atk spd. his e can slow but it's a projectile, it does not go thru minions. try to poke him when hes below 50% heat and avoid his e. keep in mind his w, which gives him a shield. dont get greedy for long trades as his cd's are not too punishing. play slow and dont get greedy for cs, bc his q poke builds up over time, and as he whittles u down with it, when he can all in u, he will be over 50% heat and force u to flash or even kill u. an early mantle will go a long way, and u can build into spirit visage or wit's end later (fon if absolutely necessary)
Sejuani
sejuani is one of the most mobile tanks next to shen. respect that mobility and try to fight her when her q is down. if she does have q up AND she is low, trying to stand in front of her so she cannot create distance is the key when all-inning her. it does airbone briefly, so if u make a mistake, she may get away.
she must land 4 stacks of e to actually stun u, but in the event that happens, ensure u have enough tenacity by taking unflinching or even rushing mercs. her w can go thru minions and terrain, so dont stand too close to minions when cs'ing and dodge it when fighting her. go for long trades with sejuani as u can bait out a stun with ur e and recast so she doesnt have time to use her e. even if she does, u will be able to snap back in time where ur main body gets stunned, and as long as ur in a safe spot, it wont be too bad
Sett
this could be either even or major depending on the skill level of the sett player. out of all the immobile bruisers, sett is the easiest to kite as he only gains ms with his q. yone has an exceptional gap closer and creator with q3/r/e and a combination of all. sett has the same passive as garen, altho its a lot slower, so poking him doesnt feel as useless. his cd's are relatively long, so once he blows his e, use that opportunity to trade him. when hes dmg'd, he stacks grit on his w, which converts to true dmg in the centre and ad in the wings and grants him a shield based on missing health. the key to fighting him is to poke him down so that his grit bar never really becomes full, and u can comfortably all-in without taking too much dmg. use e or flash (if u absolutely cannot walk around) when he uses w as the dmg is no joke. a lot of setts will w then flash, so be prepared to react if ur low and he has w+flash up. his r is not as scary in 1v1's, so try to bait it out with e. a lot of setts have good discipline to not ult u in spirit form, but in the event that they do, u can recast at the exact moment he ults (ur unstoppable, u wont be suppressed). otherwise, just recast at the end, u'll be fine unless ur super, super low. dont try to fight him immediately out of his r as ur disarmed (similar to irelia r), u wont have much time to do anything and u may die if ur low enough
Shen
early game shen is the scariest shen. he deals a lot of damage without taking a lot due to his q increasing his ad and providing him as shield. he blocks on-hit attacks with w (like jax e). and his taunt gives him back energy every time it hits an enemy unit. also, hes a tank, so trading him a lot of the times feels useless, especially since a grasp proc gives him hp and heals. what makes shen so difficult to lane against is his r, and knowing when to let him go or stop it. u typically want to let shen r if he decides to do it while ur wave is at his tower. if he didnt take tp, this gives u free plates or even a tower. if he does, u still get a crash and a good reset, maybe even a plate, too. if the wave is at ur tower, make a choice: stop his r if his presence will help his team or let him go if it won't. i like to hold q3/r every time hes in lane bc if i ever feel like i SHOULD stop shen r, i can. i categorized this as a major threat not based on the skill level of the shen player but of how every minute of this lane is crucial. do not waste time against shen; make his ults not worth the plates, tower itself, herald, or even the game
Singed
can be a really annoying match up for anyone. a good singed will proxy farm u into ur nexus and never get pinched a single time. the key to shutting down a singed lane completely is to spam-kill him with ur mid and/or jg. will it stop his proxy? sometimes, no, but it will give u ur minions back, which finally gives u plates. if they dont proxy as hard as that, they will just run u around in lane. they usually rush rylai's to make fighting and chasing him unbearable, but dont bother doing so unless u can hit ur immobilizing spells and keep him locked up enough so he cant flash/ghost/r away or flip u away. mantle, an early spirit visage/wit's end or even mercs will help a lot. dont dive him unless he's super low or unless u know his w and e are down because u can't q3/r/e-recast/flash while grounded
Sion
easiest match up for anyone, really. pre-nerf sion was a bit of a problem in terms of matching, but current sion is no longer a threat in sidelane. and he was never a threat in laning phase. his q can knock up when charged long enough, and the key to knowing when is his axe glows briefly. dont run vertically out of it, just run/e to the side. treat it like aatrox's w. his e reduces the armor on the enemy unit it hits and subsequently slows anything behind it, so be mindful of that as it allows him to hit his q's easier. luckily, yone is extremely mobile with q3, r, and e, so it's typically never an issue getting hit by either. his passive/shield gives him infinite health from enemy units, so they typically take grasp + overgrowth to have as much hp, hp regen, and resistances as possible. rush bork and constantly match him so he doesnt scale for free. if he somehow gets to, just be prepared for a 5k+ sion in ur face. worry not, if they build straight tank, they are nothing but a body, so if u dont have to play front to back, ignore him for more volatile champs
Tahm Kench
tahm is a lot like ornn in the sense that they're super tanky but do a lot of damage, but tahm is a little harder for yone than ornn bc he's more mobile. he has great gank set-up, so him using his w to engage (when ur not super low) is a tell-tale sign that ur being ganked. his q does not go thru minions, so u always want to hide behind them. each lick slows u and after 4 licks, he can stun u, so keep that in mind for when u do fight him. it is a skillshot, tho, so try ur best to dodge as u fight. after only 3 licks, tho, he can eat u, so be prepared to be spat out under a tower. tahms have good discipline to not eat u in spirit form, but in the off-chance the tahm does, like sett, if u recast at the exact moment he casts, u wont be ulted (unlike sett tho idk if his ult goes on cd). otherwise, once u get spat out, e duration will be over or u can just quickly recast it and get back to safety. try to always engage with e post-6 as this will err tahms from wanting to eat u. altho be careful as if he gets 3+ stacks on u and ur body is not in a safe place, he will either w onto it to eat/stun u or simply walk past u and camp it
Teemo
teemo is not that hard of a counter as many ppl think despite yone's on-hits getting blocked. his blind (q) does not last very long, and even tho u cannot dmg him with aa, q, w, u can still get ur shield from w to mitigate any dmg u've taken. once blind is over, he has nothing to prevent u from shredding him. mid game makes it a little easier to deal with him as with more atk spd, q + aa weave-ins are ur main source of dmg. in early laning phase, however, teemo is annoying. they have control of the wave as they can blind u and prevent u from cs'ing and/or poke u away from it. they usually take pta and rush nashor's, berserker's as its easy for them to proc pta with more atk spd. if he hits u and u see the stack, run outta range until it goes away. its not worth the 60-90g, 21g or 14g over a hefty % of ur hp (unless u have means of regaining that quickly). trading with teemo is a little difficult as his w gives him enough ms to sidestep ur spells, especially a q3 or r engage, so try to get on top of him before u q3, or mix it up, and sit on q2, engage, and build up q3 while u fight him. try to bait out his blind before u go for early trades. a mantle and an early spirit visage/wit's end will go a long way as their job is to keep on-hit heavy champs down. u will be their target for blinds in skirmishes and team fights. pick up oracles post 6 and buy a pink everytime u back as well bc when ur oracle's is down, dropping a pink in lane or river will reveal any more shrooms he's put down since u left
Trundle
trundle is pretty fast but also pretty kiteable, so dont stand still and fight him. the goal is to get him low enough to where u can all-in him with ur gap closers without worrying abt him running away with his ice field (w), stopping u with pillar (e), or turning around and ulting and stat checking u. if he r's and u do not think u can beat him, just run away. he steals a % of ur armor and mr, which is huge at all stages of the game. he is an incredibly good skirmisher, but as are u. poke him as he goes for cs, and give him extra pokes when he goes to bite (q) as its a longer animation than an auto. make sure ur positioning is the best it can be at all times as like jax, he has means of getting on top of u, staying on u, and killing u or forcing a summoner's/bad recall
Tryndamere
tryndamere players are very one-dimensional, as is the champ. his passive gives him up to 60% crit level 1, and they will all-in u in hopes of getting a crit off and a cheesy first blood. and if they dont get the crit, u get first blood and a free long sword. besides that, up until level 6 is pretty much just a cs'ing game as u have all the control. he is very auto-attack heavy, therefore u automatically have more range than him. his w slows u, so be ready to q3/r/flash away if absolutely necessary. post level 6 is dive galore where they will pop ult and dive u under turret off cd. try to keep him locked up with q3/r, use e to run him around, or flash, if necessary. in the event that u are one more aa from death, he will be forced to choose: continue going for u or trying to get out. at that point, either an ignite, a turret shot, or e recast damage should be enough to kill him when his r ends. rushing a warden's mail against him is the meanest thing u can do. and if u want to be even meaner, build frozen heart/randuin's omen
Urgot
urgot has a rly strong level 1 if he gets his dash-grab (e) off on u, otherwise if he misses or doesnt start e, hes quite an easy match up. he will poke with q, which slows, and it can be annoying if ur trying to chase him or run away from him. u can easily dodge his e with ur own as if u just e in the opposite direction of him, he will never catch up UNLESS he e+flashes. the meanest thing u could do against urgot is rush warden's mail as urgot already struggles with dmg, and that basically kills it off until he gets black cleaver, or another armor shred item. his abilities go thru minions, so dont stand too close to them. dont be greedy for cs if u know his e is up and ur low. he is ranged, so his poke will be annoying, especially if they run pta, which most urgots take. u can dodge his r relatively easy too with ur e, if u know its coming from a long range. iirc, ur w gives u enough shield to not immediately get r-recasted if ur EXACTLY at the threshold it procs, so if u can kill him during that window or somehow regain enough health thru some sort of source, he'll just never be able to kill u
Vayne
she's on par with quinn, but vayne is more annoying in terms of mobility, meaning she can dodge ur q3, r, or poke with a simple roll (q). vayne is a lot less scary in top than in bot because she has no support, therefore she is extremely vulnerable to ganks and yone himself. the little mobility she has is her q, and her e pushes u back, which stuns if u get pushed into a wall. her r+q turns her invisible, but yone has 3 aoe's, so if u can see her brief outline, u can guess where she is and hopefully lock her up or even kill her before she has the chance to do anything. otherwise, if ur not confident in fighting her at that point, get back to safety and re-engage when u feel its better. keep in mind she does deal true dmg, so dont be too cocky just bc shes an adc. dont stand close to walls and wait for her to e first before u try to gap close. her poking will be a lot more annoying than urs early on, but again, warden's mail rush. be a bigger ******* and build frozen heart
Vladimir
vlad isnt too major of a threat to yone in the mid lane in the first place, so he wont be any more in top. the only annoying thing about vlad is his q health regen as he doesnt have to q u, he can q minions, other champs, neutral camps, etc. so exe/bramble rush is pretty useless against him, but u'll need it at later stages in the game. his damage and sustain are no joke, so watch his bloodsucking(?) bar as when its full, he gets more health and deals more dmg when he q's. he can e and w at the same time, meaning he can become invulnerable while dealing dmg, which makes him perfect for a quick dive or trades. though, w does take part of his health, so dont let him q u right after to regain what he lost (he can still q minions but he gains more from champs). trade him when u know his w is down, and it is a long cd, up to 22s level 1. vlads build for ability haste and ms, so dont underestimate how fast his spells come off cd later on. if he r's u, dont try to fight him unless ur not low as even if hes low, he can regain so much health, and if ur not careful, u can still go from 100-0 if the vlad plays it very smart. if u think u can fight him, ignite him when he r's. he outscales u post 16 so pick up a wit's end/spirit visage (or even fon) fairly early on so he cant quickly level up by uncontested farming or winning duels against u
Volibear
voli top is not as scary as voli jg bc they mostly take grasp top. some go ap voli for perma splitting and one of the best 1v1's, which hurts like hell, and would prolly be in major if not for the majority of them taking grasp and going tank. voli's passive allows him to chain lightning between enemy units, which will hit u if u stand too close to them, so be mindful of that when u go to cs or poke him. his q gives him ms and stuns when hitting an enemy unit. they usually try to run u into their e and stun u in the aoe. the key to trading is waiting out his lightning for longer trades or quick trades so he doesnt e+q and combo u. his e gives him a shield, it's best to sometimes ignore ur checkmark and go-all in until he's dead unless u know his e is down. dont bother staying under turret when ur low as he will just r it and kill u, unless he's low as well and u have q3/r/e/flash up. tp is the best to take against him. DONT OVERSTAY if u think he will ult and kill u, even if ur relatively healthy
Warwick
warwick is another really good 1v1'er, probably the best in top lane as he has great sustain and cc. however, his wave clear sucks, and a lot of the times they'll start an unintentional freeze. they usually pick up bork or titanic hydra first, which allows them to clear waves faster, but in the beginning, try to last hit the very first wave so that ur not shoving towards him and giving him an early gold lead or fight on u. like vlad, rushing executioner's is useless as he can q a minion for health back, but do build grievous for mid-late as there is more team fights and less wave control. ur trades will feel less useless but consistently poke him. he's a mana champ, and if he wants his hp back, he has to use q. also, if he wants to trade u back, using his fear (e) will cost him mana. try to bait out his fear before trading with q3/e as u can do more dmg and take less. they usually take lethal, and ww will win an all-in against u even if u have lt urself. if u do fight him, whether from level 1 or anytime in lane, always ignite him (if applicable). if someone is low, he gains ms, so make sure he isnt on all fours when u fight post level 6 as this increases the range of his r. like any other suppression, if u recast e at the exact moment ww casts r, he'll either miss or u'll escape his ult and he'll be locked in anim
Wukong
wukong is as strong, if not a little less, in the top lane as he is in the jungle. altho, bc of the divine nerfs, he isnt as disgusting as he used to be. still, u should respect him from even level 1. good wukong players will start e and immediately poke u or even fight u from then. they typically take conq, so u could potentially win lvl 1 if u have ignite and a pot. but try to avoid fighting him early as a lead for wukong is the last thing u want. u cant bait out any of his abilities with e except for his w, which is usually used as an escape or cheesy engage for r. when he e's forward for u or a minion, strike back with q+aa or preemptively w then q+aa to mitigate most of the damage and win the trade. they typically e+q, and his q reduces ur armor, so be careful with long trades after u q's u. every aa stacks his passive, which gives him armor and health regen. u shouldnt fight him at max stacks (u can check by clicking him and looking under his hp bar) unless absolutely necessary. still respect his divine spike despite the nerfs. as long as u trade him properly and keep his cd's in mind, this is a fair lane and if u are the better player, this is a winning lane for u
Yasuo
the brother match up is no different than it is mid lane, altho as top laners typically play weak side and he cant roam to bot lane to pick up free kills, its more skill based than ever. yasuo is considered a counter to yone bc he can w yone's q3, but yone can e his q3. both go on relatively long cd's, but the best part is yone does not have to meet any criteria to r, as well as getting in 1-2 hits after the ult with greater atk spd bc of prolonged cc. at least for top lane, yasuo beats yone early game while yone beats yasuo late game, and this is primarily bc of wave control. it is a lot easier to control ur wave in the top lane than it is in mid lane, where volatile champs, like yasuo, primarily want to shove and roam or bully their laner. yasuo's main kit revolves around enemy units, so the best u could do against yasuo is early freezing and trading him if he gets greedy for cs. dont try to bully him under tower unless hes low as he has ur minions to make plays on u with. try not to use ur e to dodge his q3 as that is ur primary engage of getting on top of him to avoid his w. as long as u keep an eye on him, unless he e+q3's onto u or his teammates have means of airborning u, u will never get r'd. play smart and be the better brother
Yorick
he can be very annoying in lane early with his pets and cage and eventually at 6 with his maiden. ur trades with him will be easy as u get more and more atk spd, so just be patient and focus on freezing against him early as he can get punished for trying to walk up for cs or missing his skill shot for a last hit. however, he is annoying out of lane, too, regardless if he builds hullbreaker as u have to match him for the rest of the game. the bright side is, as long as u dodge the e, his pets are free money (2g but money nonetheless). dont worry if u get hit by it, even if it may slow u, u can w as the pets jump onto u and mitigate the dmg and kill them with aa/q's. the key to trading with yorick is waiting for him to use his e either on u or a minion then engaging. u can still trade before he uses it but disengage if it lands and take care of his pets. the damage stacks up over time, especially if u dont take d shield/second wind/refillable and/or if u dont have sceptre yet. his cage is easy to get out of as u can q3 or r thru it, aa it twice/thrice/four times (depending on level), and with more atk spd, its even easier. sometimes yoricks panic cage u while ur in ur e so just recast if that happens. the most annoying part of yorick is surprisingly not him nor his pets but his maiden. it feels like a constant 1v2, so just focus on killing her while u cs before going back to trading him, bc it hurts like hell dealing with his pets while maiden sucks ur soul
Amumu
work very well together in both team fights and skirmishes. amumu's aoe stun helps yone line up q3/r easier as well as double bandages keep mobile enemies locked up along with yone's q3/r. also yone is hybrid dmg and benefits from amumu passive
Braum
yone proc's braum's passive very quickly, and if yone hits a great ult, braum can follow up or vice-versa
Diana
not as strong as diana/yasuo, but if either hit a really good ult, the other has extremely good follow-up
Galio
as far as other tanks go, galio is the best one to pair with yone as he acts as the frontline the team needs for yone to fill the skirmisher and assassin role. he provides plenty of cc and help (if necessary) for yone in the backline. if yone e's in and his body is in an unsafe spot, galio can also peel for him with or without r.
Nilah
similar to diana, if she hits a really good ult, yone can follow up and vice-versa. stronger than diana, however, bc she benefits from the healing he can dish out
Renata Glasc
against melee-heavy teams, specifically, her r forces enemies to group up and hit each other which allows yone to hit a multi-q3/r, and if yone hits a multi-q3/r, renata has an easier time hitting her ult
Sejuani
similar to braum in how he procs her e very quickly. she provides plenty of cc to help yone line up his q3/r easier and vice-versa
Seraphine
she provides healing/shielding as well as cc in both her e and r that help yone land his q3/r easier
Yasuo
best wombo combo in the game. yone provides him free r's and easy multi-target r's
Yuumi
she provides healing/shielding as well as ms and atk spd from ardent censer. her r allows u to hit easy r's and her q slows down to make gap closing not only easier but u may not have to burn ur e so early or at all
Zilean
provides speed up's, slow down's--which make gap closing a lot easier, even better than yuumi. provides cc (altho can be tough to land) and a free guardian angel every minute that allows yone to skirmish as much as he wants
