Why this guide? (Gold player)

If you are looking at this guide you are trying to climb. There are guides from higher division so why should you look at Gold division? Because I'm in a division majority of players want to reach. This is their wish. To reach Gold. If they can climb higher that is great but they want Gold. Also I am a person who struggled to for a season and a half to reach it so I know somewhat of playstyle that happens in bronze, silver and gold.

(Also I'm not try to climb higher that Gold. I'm just going for season rewards and then I'm playing normal games. I find ranked can be very stressful and people are taking it too seriously.)

I started playing in season 5 preseason. I had a really hard time climbing out of silver. I even dropped back to bronze once or twice. It also didn't help that back then there was no "select your preferred roles". It was mostly like normal blind games. First come, first serve. It was a little more civilized but you couldn't really enforce someone to play some role. If he wanted adc or top he would pick it. He didn't care if this would throw a game.

So with that in mind I also hated when I had fill in the role and then babysit as a support knowing that I would play adc better than some people.

I tried my best but most support champions couldn't change the outcome on bot lane if adc was average or below average.

Then came Taric rework. It allowed me to actually carry bot lane. Not only that. He allowed for great synergy with junglers and almost every champion if I decided to try and help that lane.
He is able to change the tide of teamfights. As long he has mana he can change what would appear losing battles or escape certain deaths. As long as he has mana you and your adc will dance on 200 health and not die while enemy is frantically trying to kill you. They will use all their spells while you are freely spamming your heal like Soraka while not actually reducing your own health bar.

This false sense of impending death, that enemy team will kill you in any second now, will actually result in them over-committing and your team getting kills instead. Also after a engage or two they will be afraid of attacking you so your adc will be able to free farm.

There is also possibility that you will attract attention of enemy jungler. With your kit you will usually have enough time to run away or turn the 3vs2 fights in your favor. That will ease the jungle pressure from other lanes. This lets your top, mid more secure and allows jungler bigger map control.

Why Taric?

So you want to play support? But you also want to climb in divisions?

Most people don't want to play supports and with few exceptions most players don't really care about support role. They hate it when they are autofilled into this role because now they can't play mid and carry as Zed. They can't be play makers. They see this role as least influential team member.

This is why many people when they are stuck in support role decide to play Lux, Annie, brand, zyra, velkoz, malzahar supports. They know that they can't rely only on hope that their adc is decent player. Also it doesn't help that supports are champions that are mostly just there to protect the adc without really having any damaging abilities. And if adc fails in his job then support isn't really able to save bot lane.

If your team loses bot lane it is support's fault. And if your bot lane wins it is because of AD CARRY. Not Support Carry. Playing support is being a babysitter. Usually it is thankless job and you aren't paid enough gold (at least we get gold income items).

By now you are asking yourself "Who in his right mind would want to play this thankless role? I want to win games."

Well Riot answered your prayers with Taric rework. And season 8 runes didn't break or weaken his playstyle.

Pros / Cons

Pros:

- LOW SPELL COOLDOWNS - When you get used to it, you can efficently juggle between your spells and constantly cast spells.

- TRUE DEFINITION OF A WORD "SUPPORT" - Why protect one person and having to stay by his side the entire time? When Taric casts his W shield on his ally it doesn't matter if Taric is in front line or backline. He will be able to protect that person even if he they are far away. Also ALL Taric spells are also cast from his designated ally.

- SUSTAIN GOD - You can effectively juggle your spells and keep on healing and shielding yourself and your adc (or another person you are protecting). In addition you are healing your entire team that are standing next to you or standing next to an ally you are protecting with your W thether.

- GREAT ENGAGE POTENTIAL AND GREAT CHASE POTENTIAL - This is what makes Taric great. Sometimes junglers or adc will try to engage and will miss at last second. And some of those mistakes can be fatal and instead of successful engage frontliner will die and you are left in 4vs5 situation.

His W has large casting range and even larger tether link with his partner. This way you can save your frontliner even if you are nowhere near him.

When enemy is running away it allows you to link to champions that are great at chasing down running enemies (like Lee Sin, Rengar, Khazix, Kayn, Hecarim, Amumu etc.) and stun from your partner, when they engage, even if you aren't engaged with enemy team. This allows your jungler to jump on your target and gives enough time for the rest of your team to follow. (You can heal, shield and stun with your ally even if he jumps over a wall.)

- FRONTLINER AND BACKLINER - As long as his team is near, he can protect them all. Even if Taric is in front he can efficiently protect the squishes, like adc and mages, in the backline.

Cons:

MANA HUNGRY EARLY GAME - If played way to aggressively you can deplete your entire mana bar in 1-2 early game fights.

MELEE CHAMPION - Enough said. Ranged supports can be a nightmare if they are good and you are bad at dodging their skills. Also they poke you easily. (Sustain and survive the laning phase)

- SUSTAIN GOD - You are good at sustaining. You don't deal enough damage. If your adc decides to build attack speed items, instead of at least 2 Long swords, enemy will win the trades. (Personal opinion: There is no difference early game between having 0.70 or 0.80 attack speed. Having 120 AD instead of 80 AD makes a difference.)

- POSITIONING - your team needs to be aware of yours, theirs and enemies positioning to fully utilize your spells. If your team is good you will win even losing teamfights. If their positioning is bad, they will throw teamfights and enemy will be able to pick you one by one.

Why max Q first instead of W?

At first glance Q heal feels awful and very mana inefficient in comparison to W shield. But math proves it otherwise.

Lv 6: 1,136 health, 975 mana. - items: Forbidden Idol, Targon Embrace, Glacier's Shroud.

rank 3 heal - 140-150 heal - 90 mana - cooldown 2 sec
rank 3 shield - 124 shield - 60 mana - cooldown - 11,25 sec

lv 11: 1,670 health, 1,076 mana. - items: Ardent Censer, Forbidden idol, Targon Embrance, Glacier's Shroud
rank 3 heal - 230 health - 90 mana - cooldown 2 sec
rank 5 heal - 400 health - 110 mana - cooldown 2 sec
rank 3 shield - 200 shield - 60 mana - cooldown 9,75 sec
rank 5 shield - 220 shield - 60 mana - cooldown 9,75 sec

Also it is worth nothing that after casting Q Taric will make a 2 quick basic attacks and automatically prepare 2 charges to be instantly cast.

In short, Taric can spam healing but he can't spam shields as efficiently.

How are you still alive?!?! - Quick guide to Taric's Spell Juggling

Q W, Q E,

Explanation: when enemy engages and attacks you or your adc use Q first. (Cooldown is almost instantenous, two basic attacks and you will already have 2 charges ready to cast again.)

ON HIGHER LEVELS:
Q W E or Q W Q E

Q first to heal all the dmg. W to protect the target, E to stun. (By this time you cast two spells you will do 4 basic attacks and have 4 charges of Q ready.)
In frantic teamfights try to press Q every time it comes of cooldown because it will help your team stay alive longer. It will also reduce cooldowns on your other spells faster.

EXAMPLE OF HIGH LEVEL TEAMFIGHT

If you have a diver (Vi, Yi, khazix, lee Sin) cast your W on them as they engage)
If you are in back, shield your frontliner when enemy engages.
If you are in the front or middle, keep your W on one squishy (ADC or mage).

When enemy goes all in, immediately cast your ultimate (it has 2,5 seconds cast time). By this point enemy will start dealing damage to your team and will try to kill you all before your ulti is able to give invulnerability. They won't disengage.

Use Locket of Iron Solari to shield your team and give your squishes and low health team members enough time to survive till invulnerability.

While invulnerable cast Redemption for extra free healing when there is no incoming damage.

All the while cast your heals and stuns.
