I dont see a lot of this guy anymore and probably for good reason as hes considered pretty bad now. If you dodge his knockup which is pretty easy then you completely out trade him with your combo.
Jax
Jax is flavor of the month right now thanks to rageblade but hes no problem for Shen. Your Twilight Assault really hurts him and he's mostly AA based which gets blocked by Sprits Refuge.
Mordekaiser
Really easy matchup for Shen, he has low range poke and most of his damage comes from Mace Of Spades. Luckily for Shen he can time Spirits Refuge to block the 3rd hit which is where most of the damage comes from. Morde is better in the bot lane right now.
Illaoi
Most people say Illaoi is a problem for Shen but thats only because she annoys the piss out of people. Shes a decently high damage lane bully that can stop you from farming but smart players will find her predictable. All of her abilities are quite easy to dodge cause they have slow casts and Twilight Assaults hurts her a lot. Late game have your carries kite her and DO NOT fight in the jungle.
Malphite
This will mostly be a farm lane because he doesnt have a lot of early damage and lacks mana. His sheild and grasp of the undying keeps him fairly healthy in lane but if he messes up you can kill him pretty quickly. I put him higher because he is probably the best teamfight initiator of League.
Master Yi
Master Yi is always seen in the jungle nowadays so dont expect to see this matchup much. However Shen deals with him pretty easy as he is heavy AA based and his Meditate can be cancelled with Shadow Dash. However he is still a carry champion and can snowball hard if you make mistakes so be warned.
Nasus
This is a farm lane but you dont want it to be. Constantly harass this guy out of lane and deny him farm. If he starts getting some stacks behind him and decides to fight then you are actually pretty good at duelling Nasus. Late game just taunt the hell out of him and dont let him touch your carries.
Teemo
Teemo is a joke, I'm just going to flat out saying it. He's an annoying lane bully who falls off mid to late game and has very little team fight prescence. Get a specters cowl first buy and proceed to dominate him.
Zac
Zac top is rare and with him being a big blob of health stats, Twilight Assault really hurts him. However he is very tricky to fight sometimes with how much space he can cover with his abilities and his team fight is really powerful.
Tahm Kench
You wreck Tahm with Twilight Assault due to the health shred and deny him passive stacks for devour with Spirits Refuge. However Tahm is very cheesy when it comes to surviving which makes this lane a bit harder.
Riven
Skill based matchup. Taunt her in the middle of her knockup to cancel it, get your 3 hits of Twilight Assault in and then walk out. You can win trades with her by playing around her mobility and taking note of her cooldowns.
Dr. Mundo
Twilight Assault shreds his health but he is still annoying due to his ult and cleavers. Consider taking ignite to cut the healing from Sadism.
Renekton
Renekton is an annoying lane bully with high damage early to mid game. However you can win lane if you take note of his cooldowns. If you see him use any ability on farm then go in for a trade as he wont be able to fully combo you.
Sion
Sion is statistically the biggest tank in League and has a lot of CC. However Shen is very good at fighting tanks and your %health hurts him like hell. You can dodge most of his stuff with Shadow Dash as well.
Taric
Dont underestimate this outrageous man. His damage is actually pretty decent on a full combo and his stun is annoying as sin. His heal is pretty strong when he has some levels on it but at the end of the day.... it's ****ing Taric.
Zed
You are the superior ninja. Early game this guy can push you around a bit but on your first buy you will start shrugging it off. You can fight him pretty well with a full combo, just watchout when he gets duskblade.
Tryndamere
AA based champions is what we like however Trydamere can be a handful. He has extremely high damage and can crit without buying items, his heal is strong and his ultimate makes him a 1v1 king. Play smart by only trading with him on low fury and you should be fine. Watch out for any backdoor cheese.
Cho'Gath
I hate this guy. Health and Mana sustain, decent cc, high damage, tankiness without buying items and a silence. Since you are an ability based fighter this guy can wreck you. Just farm and ask your jungler to gank as he doesnt have much mobility.
Darius
Broken as heck and you know it. Pre level 6 he is difficult to trade with and post level 6 it pretty much impossible. The best you can do is not give him kills and keep farming. Also watch him constantly if he roams and follow it up with your ult. Make sure to Shadow Dash him in teamfights as much as possible cause hes more dangerous than an ADC most times.
Fiora
I dodge this matchup most times. She has everything that counters you. Sustain, %health true damage, a gap closer, can counter your Shadow Dash. Basically she nukes you at every point in the game. Just starve her of kills and farm and wait for ganks.
Gangplank
Tricky to fight cause you have to keep an eye on those barrels and his damage is crazy high when he has a few items. His Parrley can proc Grasp Of Undying which is annoying but luckily you can outrade him with your combo when his orange is on cooldown.
Hecarim
Skill matchup. His teamfight is better and he has high damage but he needs to snowball to be effective. So just dont give him kills and play smart.
Olaf
This guy wins most fights cause of his kit so dont trade with him. Just farm and wait for ganks and try to dodge his axes as best as you can.
Poppy
She needs some nerfs. Her base damages are crazy high on Hammer Shock and Heroic Charge. She has high tankiness thanks to steadfast presence and can block Shadow Dash. Ganking her is also tricky thanks to her ultimate.
Pantheon
Annoying point and click spear and does a crazy amount of damage early game. Keep an eye on his mana pool before you trade. He will most likely take ignite as his ult gets him back to lane easy so watch out.
Quinn
I hate it when people cheese her top lane just cause she is ranged and has a blind. Not only that but she is one of the rare few who can follow your ult quickly thanks to her own. Just farm for a while till you get some armour then you should be able to deal with her.
Rengar
Snowball lane. If you deny him kills then he becomes pretty weak. Stay away from the brushes and watch his ferocity stacks. Keep a pink ward on you for when he ults and follow him if he roams bot.
Garen
This guy is my most hated champion. I dont like his playstyle, his yelling, his abilities, his tankiness, his damage. His silence wrecks you as you're an ability based fighter so its pretty difficult to trade with him. Leave lane if you're low health at all times.
Ryze
He is going to afk farm early game. If you try to fight him he will just snare you and keep farming. Mid-Late game he is crazy with a massive amount of dps. Ask for ganks and push constantly.
Singed
Singed is a tricky matchup due to his playstyle. He is going to farm as hard as he can so he can get to his lategame god stage which is what you dont want. If he tries to go for a level 1 proxy farm, stand on your minion wave and keep hitting him as he wont be able to take the damage without dying.
Wukong
The Godkong really hurts. He has crazy high damage and can use his clone to juke your Shadow Dash. You can win trades if you play smart and in teamfights he is a king so make sure to taunt him as much as you can.
Yorick
Yorick does what he does best. Which is win lane. Hide in the brush to lose aggro from his ghouls and ask for jungler ganks. Late game he falls off hard and just becomes a revive bot for his carry so there is that.
Vayne
Vayne top is just the worst. Her silver bolts completely shred you and her tumble can dodge Shadow Dash. However its not a common picked matchup so you're lucky.
Gnar
Annoying as hell. Hes going to constantly harass and kite you in mini form. Your best bet is to fight him in mega form and dodge his stun with Shadow Dash.
Graves
Graves rework has made him extremely dangerous. He has decent tank stats with his true grit passive and a massive amount of damage. You can fight him if you are quick to notice when he's reloading but its very difficult.
Nunu & Willump
You dont see Nunu top much but its very annoying. Hes going to constantly throw snowballs at you and sustain like crazy. In teamfights make sure to Shadow Dash when he ults to cancel it as the base damage on it is ridiculously high when fully channeled.
Nautilus
He's more played support now but is sometimes seen top lane. Do not underestimate this guys damage early on and he is one of the biggest super tanks late game. Keep your lane warded as he can set up ganks to be in his favor pretty well thanks to his crowd control
Irelia
Difficult matchup. She has sustain, a gap closer, a stun and true damage. You're going to want to farm and deny her kills as she can snowball extremely hard. Ask for jungler ganks.
Rumble
Very difficult in the early game. He is going to push you under tower constantly with his flame spitter but once you get an MR item you have a decent chance at fighting him. Ask for jungler ganks as he has little escapes and will constantly be pushing.
Trundle
He's an extremely strong duelist and is the definition of an anti tank. If you get a taunt you can trade with him pretty will, its just getting out before he trades back with you thats the tricky part. Late game you will want to stay away as his ult makes you as useful as a bar of soap.
Hello! My name is Horscraft and this is my first mobafire guide. Shen is my favourite and best champion with my highest winrate. I loved him both before and after his rework and he is a great top laner for almost any composition. I hope this guide helps both new and experienced players learn some new things about The Eye Of Twlight.
Who Is Shen?
Who Is Shen?
Shen was originally one of the best super tanks of League Of Legends with the craziest map presence in the game thanks to his iconic ultimate Stand United. However he was reworked in early 2016 and turned into a tanky/utility based fighter while still keeping two of his best known abilities.
In game Shen is the true homie. He will straight up shield you from certain death and destruction and dive right into the entire enemy team for you because he's such a nice guy. He's amazing at peeling for his carries and is pretty damn good at dueling other tanks and bruisers.
Thanks to his rework, Shen has a bit more room to breath when it comes to builds and playstyle as it used to be the same build almost every game. Thanks to Twilight Assault, Shen actually has some pretty high damage now which can be amped up with items like Titanic Hydra and if you're feeling a little cheeky Sated Devourer can make Shen a force to be reckoned with.
Pros/Cons
Pros/Cons
Pros
Incredibly Tanky
Strong Duelist
Versatile Build Paths
Massive Global Presence
Energy Based
Brings Utility To Fights
Is a Ninja
CONS
Cannot carry
Runs out of energy in drawn out fights
Gets kited easily
Very little waveclear
Melee
Relies a lot on Shadow Dash to fight
People complain when they die even when you ult them
Runes
Runes
AD Marks to give Shen a bit of dueling power.
Scaling Armor Seals for every tanky top laner of course.
Same thing with scaling MR glyphs.
Movespeed Quints can be traded out for an offensive or defensive option depending on your play style. I prefer these as Shens chase potential is pretty meh and he needs to stick to people like crazy.
Masteries
Masteries
Grasp Of Undying is core on almost every top laner now. It makes trading a lot better and gives some lane sustain for our ninja.
Some people take bounty hunter over oppressor which I dont really get as that extra damage when taunted can help quite a bit.
The rest can be changed how you want but I typically think these masteries are the best on Shen.
Abilities
Abilities
Ki Barrier is Shens passive and its what makes Shen such a tanky mofo.
After casting a spell, Shen gains a shield which blocks 48 + (4 x level) (+14% of bonus Health) damage for 2.5 seconds. Abilities that affect other champions reduce the cooldown of this effect by 4 - 7.5 seconds (depending on level).
Good Shen players can time this passive around trades effectively.
Twlight Assault is Shens bread and butter and is what gives him some pretty good damage.
Shen calls his spirit blade, empowering his next three basic attacks to deal 3 / 3.5 / 4 / 4.5 / 5% (+1.5% per 100 AP) of his target's maximum Health as bonus magic damage. If his spirit blade collides with an enemy champion on its way to him, Shen's damage increases to 5 / 5.5 / 6 / 6.5 / 7% (+2% per 100 AP) of his target's maximum Health per attack instead and he gains 50% bonus attack speed. All enemies struck by the returning blade are also slowed by 35% when moving away from Shen for the next 2 seconds.
With a few items like Titanic Hydra this ability can give Shen a lot of burst. To get the best out of trades you always want to pull the spirit blade through players.
Spirit's Refuge is a pretty neat ability that allows Shen to win fights over AA based champions really well.
Shen's spirit blade creates a defensive zone for 1.75 seconds. Basic attacks that would hit Shen or an allied champion in the zone are blocked. If there are no champions to protect in the zone when it starts, the spirit blade will not activate until one enters or 2 seconds pass.
Shadow Dash is one of Shen's iconic abilities that was happily kept in his rework.
Passive: Dealing damage with Shadow Dash or Twilight Assault recovers 30 / 35 / 40 Energy.
Active: Shen dashes to a target location, taunting champions and monsters he collides with for 1.5 seconds and dealing 50 / 85 / 120 / 155 / 190 (+12% of bonus Health) physical damage to them.
This ability acts as multi target CC, a gap closer and an escape and can give you a lot of 1v1 potential.
Stand United is one of the best ultimates in the game, hands down.
Shen places a shield on a target allied champion, absorbing 250 / 550 / 850 (+130% of ability power) damage for 5 seconds. After channeling for 3 seconds, Shen teleports to the target's location.
This ability is going to make your team mates love you, especially when you manage to pull off the clutchest of saves. I have saved mid laners from dying 1 tick off ignites, I have dived into entire enemy teams to get them away from my ADC. This is what makes Shen a cool dude to sum it all up. The shield is the biggest in game and if you run teleport then this ult gives you so much map mobility.
Ninja Synergy (Will Be Updated More)
Ninja Synergy (Will Be Updated More)
Shen can work well with a multiple amount of champions in League Of Legends but there are a few champions out there who Shen can truly work with to make some frightening team compositions.
Twitch is a top pick for a champion that works extremely well with Shen. What with Twitch being a frightening mid-late game adc that has stealth worked into his kit makes for some frightening plays when a Shen Shadow Dashes an enemy team from out of nowhere while Twitch continuously sprays them down with Rat-Ta-Tat-Tat Rat-Ta-Tat-Tat .
In short, Shen can use Stand United on Twitch during Ambush and pop out of nowhere before the enemy team even has time to wonder what just happened.
Twisted Fate is a great teammate for Shen, with his high amount of utility, burst damage and roaming potential. Both of them have the most global presence in the game thanks to and which can make counter ganks and split pushing extremely easy for your team.
Kennen makes sense as he is another ninja from the Kinkou order and can devastate teamfights when paired up with Shen. Kennen is relatively squishy yet relies on being right in the center of fights to get the most out of Slicing Maelstrom. Thanks to Kennen has a lot more safety pulling this off to rampage on towards the enemy carries.
