Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Again a slippery character that has a lot of movement options whilst doing a lot of damage. Her shroud which makes her invisible and gives her movement speed completely counters your kit my advice to to run as fast as you can and E her E. Fortunately she is out of the current meta and can't do much to you.
Camille
Camille is a slippery champ that has an ult which can stop you from kiting there's no way you win any engage against her so just don't even try to just farm and hope you make it to team fighting.
Darius
Darius has very good all in potential as well as soft and hard cc in his kit which means if you get hooked by him you are just dead because a slowed Aatrox is a dead Aatrox. However you do better in team fights if you play them right even with the new buffs to Darius' team fighting potential. Keep E until he has pulled and slowed. Due to the recent update (9.12) Darius is a much larger threat, would recommend banning in lower elos.
Irelia
The low elo perma-ban. Irelia is a slippery champ from the get go with and amazing level 2 if she has stacks you can try and zone and predict her Q's early game to shut down her dominance however she will pretty easily kill you whenever she wants just save your E to dodge her E as if she hits you with that she will kill you / make you flash 100% of the time when she has ult you have to flash out of it or you will die as it constricts your movement as well as if you step on it you are slowed and killed by her.
Kennen
This evil little rat of top lane will constantly poke you with his Q's until your stunned when he can have his way with you ping as soon as he leaves lane as his ult can make for some disgusting double kills on bot DO NOT all in Kennen ever unless a good gank is coming and you are at very high health best way to win the game against kennen is to scale into team fights fight for objectives and corrode your enemy.
Riven
I perma ban Riven because she needs to be deleted from this game her reward for her combos is far greater than yours also when she goes in she can just perma cc you and your dead before you know it. You scale equally so if you can farm and roam that's your best option because she will win every
Tahm Kench
I don't understand how this thing works. Tahm has a global ultimate so he can easily appear behind. While slow, he easily does the same to you and has greater poking range. He is pretty much unstoppable as he can slow, stunt, and pull you away from turret or from your kit.
Vayne
Did someone say ranged top lane bully? Vayne, even after the hot fix, has amazing early game with her Q to dodge and the fact that she is ranged the more time you give her the worse it gets aswell with her W doing true damage she will start to shred you around level 5-7 her ult makes her invisible when she rolls as well making it even harder to land your Q's and get out of sticky situations if you go even she out scales you into the best 1v9 champ there is best advice is to dodge or if your in your promos hope your team can hyper carry.
Gangplank
Gangplank is pretty much the opposite of Aatrox. He can shot you from range with his Q, can setup barrels to poke and slow you, and his W allows him to escape your Q W combo. When facing off against Gangplank, keep some distance in between you and him and when he tries to setup barrels, take out the first barrel placed.
Jayce
Who Doesn't Love a Ranged Top Lane Bully? You find yourself against the god of poke Jayce you have two options when facing Jayce you can either try and go even with him in laning phase or you give up lane but then try to carry in team fights. Just sit behind your minion wave in laning phase there's nothing you can accomplish by going out of your way to pressure him just wait till he messes up and punish.
Pantheon
Oh boy. Pantheon has the best early game of any top laner other then Vayne. Not only does he have wave clear, he also has a longer poke and can stun you. His passive also means that if you hit your passive when its up, no health returned. Just hope enemy jungler doesn't pick him.
Renekton
The Stomper of Low elo. This monster will always out trade you when he goes for trades. Your safest option is to poke him and when he goes in CC him with your Q's and W and E away.
Shen
This is a big match up to Aatrox. Shen is like a better version of Tahm Kench. Not only can he force fights but he can also take zero damage from any of your abilities with his W. Not to mention he has a world ult that also grants shield.
Volibear
While not always picked, Volibear is a pretty big threat. His stuns and pull back are some of the most potent in the top lane. Even if you can get him low enough, his passive restores all him health. Recommended that you out kite him and out damage him.
Vladimir
More AP top laners, so much fun. Vlad has been dominating in the top lane, especially in the Spring Splits and MSI, his ability to steal health, gain health, and keep distance is potent and should not be underestimated. If left unchecked, Vlad will win the game. Keeping his health and farm low is top priority. Poke lane and/or him and you can gain your advantage over him.
Cho'Gath
Cho'Gath really depends on who is playing him. Generally speaking, Cho'Gath will loss to Aatrox if non his abilities land. If you can dodge his E and Q combo, kite around, and keep him in one place you win.
Fiora
This is interesting match up. Fiora has a much better kite then you and can reflect your attacks to stun you, if she lands them. It really comes down to who has more farm and plays smarter.
Gnar
Yet another ranged, kind off, top laner. Gnar, while not in his Mega Gnar form, is a nightmare. Small, ranged, and fast pretty nasty. But, once he hits Mega Gnar, you can all in on him. Mega Gnar is much easier to control and you can easily setup your Q's, W, and E combo to all in him.
Illaoi
We've all been there facing Illaoi the god forsaken lane bully that will zone you and kill you endlessly however if you can just avoid dying in laning phase you will be a lot better in team fights later on. Its best to just sit behind your minion wave and strap yourself in for a long boring laning phase.
Jax
You out trade him hard early game. As long as you abuse him early with Q poke and combo's, you will absolutely destroy him. When he has around second item like Spear of Shojin he will start to kill you unless your fed.
Poppy
An odd ball of a pick. Poppy is a CC controller if you allow her to get ahead of you. If she rushes you, you can easily stop her rush with Q and continue to follow up with the other Q's and W for an easy kill. Allow her to rush you and stun, your going to have a difficult time.
Tryndamere
You can poke him and disengage perfectly early game meaning you can zone him really well and he shouldn't be any trouble. Just watch out for his all in potential at 6 and you should win against Tryndamere most times.
Yasuo
Yasuo can be a slippery devil however you can out range and out poke him all through early game and if you don't manage to kill him before six don't worry too much as he will win most all in's (If not all of them) unless you can kit with your ult well enough.
Yorick
As long as you don't get poke'd down by his little devils and you wait until he uses his W till you E then you will have no problem just going all in on him and just killing him. When his ult is up try not to get poked by it, it wont stop you from killing him and him killing you if you decide to all in so just wait don't get poked and just all in him.
Ornn
Playing against Ornn is fairly easy as long as you can kite him out. When he hits you with his W and if you can avoid his Q E combo you can out poke him and avoiding his Q E combo means that you can all in him directly afterwards. Look to punish Ornn if he W's wave as many Ornn players do. You can get an easy Q combo in if he E's out of it and you can chase. It means he cant E out of your W and from then its easy money.
Garen
Obviously Garen is the king of new players in top lane. His win rate is deceptive as you can just constantly Q him and poke him out if hes smart he will use his W to get out of your W and just run at you with Q at this point you should just be able to run and E away.
Kled
Kled on his own is probably the best match up for you. While on his steed, he can't keep up with your kite and Q's so you can easily take him. Once he is off though, he can easily evade you but if you can zone him, free kill.
Sion
As long as you don't get hit by his Q's you win easy. When he goes to Q a minion wave as, Sion's frequently do, you can Q him and cancel his Q from there you can follow up with a combo. He can do nothing about just watch out for when you go for this him E R'ing you setting him up to almost one shot you.
Urgot
You out range him completely if you know your spacing you will have no trouble against Urgot as you can just stay at a suitable distance out the range of his E and poke him. Once you poke him to just above half you should be able to win the all in. One thing to look out for and if your an Urgot player playing against Aatrox, its an OK idea to do this, Urgot can Ult Early in a fight to slow you down making it impossible to kite like Aatrox needs to and can burst you down with W and passive.
Nasus
Nasus. If you know how to manipulate wave and not just constantly push it into his tower is free elo as you can poke him from range and if you don't allow him to stack you can all in him whenever you want and win.
Kayle
Same as Nasus however some people can fall victim to Kayle's poke disengage strategy however whenever she even comes close you can Q her she'll most likely follow up with her W in which you can Q E and knock her up setting up your W which she cannot get out of into your final q and passive auto which should be enough to kill her. if she flashes out of your W that's fine as you'll kill her next time if she flashes after she was grabbed by W you can flash in the animation of your final Q to land it knock her up and finish her with your passive.
Rumble
While he has received some recent buffs, he is still rather weak. Rumble can sustain himself but he has no all in and can't really stop you from setting your Q E combos. He has some evade but if you land W and Q's, you win.
Sylas
Don't worry about Sylas. While it is possible he receive some buffs in next patch, he has been gutted and is no longer a threat.
