Im sorry, I didnt realize it was a render. Just thought it had a white background....or are renders supposed to have white backgrounds?
Anyway, if youd prefer to work with a different picture, Id be more then happy to find you one. Or, are you determined to make this work?

The_Nameless_Bard made this sig!
Not a render, it doesn't have a transparent background.
and an image with a white background is pretty hard to work with in the first place.

Magic wand tool erased 99% of anything remotely white, used a soft brush to cleanup hair and then added an outer glow.
So I turned it into a render.
It's just a weird graphic to work with, doesn't blend with anything.
Well, adding the outer glow probably didn't help with that.
Dunno about anyone else, but I hate it when people add glows to renders.

It is a drawing so it wasn't perfectly aligned, it has small little edges jutting out, adding a really soft outer glow just smoothed it out.
It wasn't a glow to add effect, it was simply a cleanup option.
I understand it's not for an effect, however people use glows to hide bad edges on renders of images that don't need it all the time...much to my annoyance xD
when I get asked to use a drawing I just try to use a fairly light colored background, that helps quite a bit.

How would that technique work on an 800x400 banner though?
I used a sky blue background and smudged trees and to make a nice blended background, but it just looked so empty.
What would you suggest?
well, I wouldn't try to use a blended background unless you're going to smudge the render into it tbh.

I hope this doesn't scare anyone off the technique. My first 100 signatures used outer glow, as I had a tendency to cut out a render myself and use a different background. The latest signature I've made has an outer glow on the render ^^

It's not as easy.
The render is hard to work with, and I don't have enough experience without pre background renders.
I spent 2 hours on it last night and came out with nothing.
I did improve each time atleast.
