I'm not saying that you should be attacking whenever you ****ing can LOL.
I'm saying that you should be attacking whenever you can with the end result of winning the teamfight (which, most of the times, means not dying). That's the whole point of an ADC. The fact that you did less damage than your own
Zed with an absurd KDA simply means you didn't do enough damage when you could've. With more kills, you have more item advantages, meaning each one of your abilities / autos would do more damage. The fact that you still did less damage than your
Zed shows that even with such an advantage in damage you didn't use it to its full extent, which is a point of improvement, yet you do not see that.

Actually, the situation was, "Hey, I'm fed! Let's not get
Last Whisper to negate any and all advantage that I have over
Trundle"
When I play
Xerath, I don't end up getting a lot of kills, but I usually end up dealing a lot of damage to my opponents. Doing this will force them to recall, and leave objectives like dragon, towers, etc available to taking since you can force a numbers advantage.
Damage output is still pretty damn important

Damage output is worthless unless you can secure. Damage output is situational, a kill is a definitive, therefore kill > damage output.

Lvl 18 Talon: Thornmail, Nasus: Thornmail + Iceborn, Trundle: Thornmail + Tabi
86.4+100, 84.4+160, 73.4+125 & 10% auto damage reduction + trundle ult
That's around 200 armor for each target, with
Trundle having probably around 250~300 with his ult.

Kills are pretty situational too. It's like perpetually chasing a
Singed or a
Nidalee or an
Ezreal and they just kite you for decades whilst dealing damage to you. You can eventually get the kill on them, but they'll get enough damage on you that you can't secure any other objectives with them.
In this case, damage output > kills. The enemy team gets a kill, but is denied objectives.
But the point you seem to be missing is that how likely you are to get a kill (as a marksman) is defined solely by how much damage you can output. That's the role of the ADC. If you can't kill anything as an ADC, then you're pretty useless to the team come teamfights.
The threat of damage is also a great deterrent against unwanted engages.
