Swain's effective all game, but he depends a lot on lane phase because it will affect his teamfight performance a huge deal. He's supposed to be in the middle of the fight, whereas longer range mages can still be effective due to CC/Utility and far away damage.
The numbers nerf, tiny as it is, may make a difference between killing or not killing - it will make the difference in some games (not like we never saw people steer away from trades with less than 10HP - and let's face it, it's 300G advantage you just missed out because someone decided this was necessary to patch.

Tbh I feel like the only reason Swain "falls off" in team-fights if he doesn't get ahead is because he can't secure mid lane's CS from his own team and falls back in CS l0l. No one cares if Swain needs his Zhonya, they just want that mid lane CS so they can get round to carrying him.
Whereas if you get super ahead in laning phase and already have a Large Rod / Zhonya's by the time your teams group up, your W will at least secure 3 caster minions each wave.
It just annoys me how my own team is usually the reason I can't keep up in CS with everyone else as Swain. :>
Swain's team-fighting when behind / not ahead wouldn't be so hard if you could just keep farming until you have your core items at a decent time.

I mean, they even nerfed Pantheon. There's no reason for him to use his W on minions. All it does is give you a chance of accidentally stunning a minion and losing a kill.
such wat? o.o
I dont think many people accidentally miss a point and click stun often. And if you do.........
This makes jungle pantheon viable.
Sometimes you can even W to minions to escape from ganks/chase after kills when the enemy champion is out of range of w.
Or W onto a minion and Q ignite someone that just flashed away.

The ignite thing is a bug fix which inadvertently nerfed affected champions, not a direct nerf to those champions.
Semantics 101. Bottom line is nerf.

was swain ever about early game though? i always thought of him and poppy as super late game champions, talon i would say has a better early game than those two but late game he can burst people anyways
thing is its only a nerf to their early game and those were late game champions anyways
Swain has an insane early game. Even his counters need to play very carefully against him in lane. Also he doesn't have any mana issues pre-6, he can spam his spells all he wants and still stay high on mana thanks to his passive.
Poppy idk and Talon's early-game I think is weak against most mid lane match-ups if both players are of equal skill. Talon's only good because his late-game burst is almost instant and has no counterplay due to his silence.
I understand they were only small nerfs, but they were completely unnecessary.
