Okay looking at a new series start:
1) Gintama
2) Gerren Lagann
guess i should include Madoka Magica based on recent posts?
Thoughts?
That and Log Horizon if you liked Sword Art Online, it's like a better version of it. I've also heard that Kill La Kill is good but I don't know..

okay dokay. SAO was okay so i can add Log Horizon. Watched Kill La Kill. Thought it was above average :)
So will start watching in this order:
1) Madoka
2) Gurren Lagann
3) Gintama (200 episodes...YIKES)
4) Log Horizon

Gintama is a bit weird but has awesome action and comedy at some parts, can be really tiring to wach tho lol.
TTGL is good for alot of people, for me it was just enough to barely entertain me.
Tho I guess I am one of the few of those people who think the 2nd half was better (srsly I loved the design of the last boss).
Madoka is worth it as I said before and Log Horizon >>>>>> SOA anytime. (DISSO ISSU NOTTO SWORTO ARTO ONLINUUU)
@Vavena, go and watch Kill La Kill, probably one of the better animes of Winter 2013/2014

It probably became good for me because I was merely watching it as a time filler with no reason.
Light entertainment before I go to sleep etc.
But most likely because I didn't expect anything from the series (also because of the art style), the 2nd half was so epic that I immediately began to hype it.
The plot seemed ******ed, and indeed it is still ******ed. But they managed to transform it into such an epic scale that you just disregard all the slapstick and go with it :D

Just caught up on Koe No Katachi. (ch23 to 30)
Still going strong, as amazing as ever.
I see an increasing amount of semi-filler arcs though :-/
But it's still an amazing series indeed.

Also, any strictly magical anime? But with actual rules about magic and a scale that isn't stupidly high like in fairy tail? I mean strong magic is fine but gimme a break...
I personally liked the magic system in fate/zero, though I'd like people's abilities to be focused on more since the "magic" in fate/zero was mostly just a side thing.
Any suggestions are appreciated :3
P.S I'd really appreciate a fantasy setting and no magical girls

Shana has some magical girls, though I think it's still worth the watch.
Machine-Doll wa Kizutsukanai takes place in a different setting, with magic and early industrialization combined(think steam engines and machines powered by magic). Some more magical girls.
Kaze no Stigma takes place in a modern world but has magic based on elements(fire, wind, earth...)
Darker than Black has some elements.
********'s a pretty good fertilizer

Which parts specifically are you referring to?
I'm a strong independent black mage who don't need no mana.
The grandma arc was definitely nice but it could have been done in one single episode without creating a character to directly dispose of afterwards in my opinion. More small things like that, I'll have to reread some things to specifically point them out if you're interested.
I think the story progression is too small. I'm still enjoying it but it feels like they made a good story with a list of important elements and started to write arcs as big as possible to contain one such a single element. With shounens and stuff like that I don't think that matters, because the main attraction of those genres isn't providing a story to think about. But Koe no Katachi lives of its story progression and how that story keeps the reader on the edge. There are no action scenes, no jokes and whatnot contained in other genres.
They established a great start with the history arc. Then a very good meeting arc. Bridge arc was definitely needed too. The rest of the arcs felt like introducing new characters just to lengthen the plot to me. There's a conclusion hanging above the story like Damocles' sword(they kill each-other, kill themselves or the reconcile) and the story never moves towards it. It only tries to add to the feelings of the reader while I think the goal is to ride on those feelings, not try to keep them as long as possible.
I said it earlier, but I think this kind of story shouldn't have a long duration or it will die out. Unless I got the totally wrong impression and this is supposed to be a soap.
EDIT: I'm 7 episodes in Log Horizon now. Nice series indeed. The art style feels a little bit clunky compared to SAO's though. It gives a little bit of a the A-team vibe :D

finished madoka magica. definitely was like WTF at first. took awhile to get into it but then it ended fairly well. the art was definitely different and the whole middle school girl thing threw me off a bit but all in all it was pretty decent.
@ vavena
i think what kill la kill provides is essentially fast passed action with humor mixed in with fan service. it knows what it is and it sticks with it. the art is great and the action and humor are fun. the plot is just stupid but i believe the writers played on that fact. definitely not for everyone but i enjoyed it for what it is.
