I'm currently playing Maokai since he's free for the week, and I'm seriously considering buying him next week. The thing is just that I can't find out a good build for him. I want to be able to deal more or less massive damage, but still be able to have some sort of sustain, and I'm not jungling with him.
Is these items good for my conditions or am I completely off track?
Mercury's Treads
Rylai's Crystal Scepter
Lich Bane
Force of Nature
Randuin's Omen
Rod of Ages
I think that this will give me great AP, great health, and viable good magic resist and armor along with the passive from Rylai's, FoN and Randuin's and Randuin's active.
I would love some thoughts on this, and also some suggestions for other items. It would be great if someone could give me a good full tank build for him as well, just for fun.

Depends if you're playing him jungle or top lane, and what role you want to fulfill.

Generally you want to make sure you get tanky and a good amount of CDR no matter what. Shurelya's Reverie and Frozen Heart are both great sources of CDR.

You can fill in the rest of your build for tanky AP or tanky aura (cheaper, better for jungle). Lich Bane is a bit overkill on the offensive side and I rarely find Rylai's Crystal Scepter worth the gold.

Just try to balance HP, MR, and armor, get some decent CDR, and pick up some auras/actives or AP. Rod of Ages is decent for top lane, but it takes a bit long to build in the jungle.
Thanks to Janitsu for the sig!

Rylia's is... meh.
Only thing the slow effects is your E and the explosion from your ult.
Trinity Force> Lich Bane unless you're building real big amounts of AP.

You're lacking on Armor a little and CDR a lot. Frozen Heart fulfills both of those roles.

I've always liked chu's build because he builds a really nice combination of health, armor, mr and damage.
Tri lane for life.

Chu8 is still lacking on the armor IMO.

Frozen Heart is pretty much core on Maokai... Armour, CDR & Mana are all things that he really needs.
Shurelya's is nice because it builds out of a GP/10 item, and it's got useful stats and the most underrated active in the game.
(Same for Randuin's, but that items active is broke and OP to the max. Which is why you should nearly always have it :P )
RoA is good, but if you're going full tank then Warmog's is better (Moar HP! I'd only recommend doing this if you're going for the traditional tank role though). If you're going for top-lane-AP-off-tank then RoA is pretty good. Rush Catalyst, finish boots, finish RoA. If you're facerolling in lane you could probably go double RoA, but I'm not convinced by that :/

Force of Nature is good if you're up against an AP top laner, but imo it doesn't really do much to benefit the team, compared to Shurelya's and Randuins. I guess it's good if you're aiming for 200+ MRes though.

Rylai's and Lich Bane are kinda wasted on him, as Lugignaf has already said. RoA > Rylai's imo.

My top lane tank-ish build usually goes along the lines of:
Merc Treads
RoA
Frozen Heart
Randuin's
Shurelya's
Force of Nature/Banshee's Veil depending on enemy team comp.
This gives you around 3.5k HP, nearly 300 Armour, about 150 MRes, and the tenacity from Merc Treads.

tl;dr: Do what Lugignaf says when it comes to tree-based shenanigans.

TIL, I am the resident Maokai expert here.

Thank you to jhoijhoi for the sig, and all the dividers in the guide.

Maokai needs tons of mana/mana regen to do enough damage, but also needs sustain.

So, I go for this build :

Rod of Ages
Sorcerer's Shoes or Mercury Treads or Ninja Tabi
Rabadon's Deathcap
Abyssal Mask
Rylai's Crystal Scepter
Zhonya's Hourglass

The last 3 items are in any order of importance against opponents. If they have almost totally one sided based damage type, I may just go for Archangel's Staff

PS : This build makes use of Maokai's natural sustain with his passive and base HP. But it may not be too effective against a major damage opponent.
Amumu Guide :D

Eve guide :D

Hope whatever I say helps! :D

PS : Not all my criticism is good. Most of the time, I just talk like that anyway. So forgive me if you get offended, unless you just can't look from my angle, or at least close enough.

Again, Rylais is only good for the health. The slow is almost negligible on all your skills. If you want the health that badly, Frozen mallet is better. If you want the slow, again. FM is better. It gives 40% slow over Rylais 30%.
