This is something that intigues me. In my only guide I stated a situation I only managed to witness once. Therefore, I'd like to expand my experience and theory with this comunity. However, I know this post might be shortlived. =)

The deal is: instead of going for Rabadon's Deathcap you go for extreme tankiness early, so your other laners/jungler (btw, Morgana can jungle, so we shall ignore that because these build imply loads fo farm).
Possible items to build:
Spirit Visage
Zhonya's Hourglass
Rod of Ages
Athene's Unholy Grail
Mercury's Treads
Frozen Heart

Earlygame you may start boots if you are still unsure what to build, or other specific reason. that game i did that. as I was unsure about future engagements, post laning, I got Mercury's Treads, Catalyst The Protector, Chalice of Harmony, Zhonya's Hourglass and Glacial Shroud.

This, as you can see, requires farm, but gets the job done. ALso, I think Abyssal Mask and Spirit Visage could be introduced against AP-heavy or simply for more sustain. maybe trade Athene's Unholy Grail for Spirit Visage if somehow needed. Also, it could be interesting to see Spirit Visage+ Warmog's Armoron her. Not sure if you can fit Will of the Ancients or if a support/ap-carry should have it.

What are your opinions? How viable you think it is and how much freedom of item choice you think there is?

Depends on the damage income from the rest of your team

ofc. the topic is behond that. I mean, how viable she is as a tank, and what items should be mandatory/optional.

She has a very decent tankish nature, her main problem would be a full-on initiate that many other tanks have in them (usually their ultis). Flashing and pressing R with her just won't be as devastating.

That said, she can bring in tons of utility. I'd say start Rod of Ages to facilitate your lane phase (also for it's passive), and then to begin considerations:

a) Is lane phase still going on?

- If enemy team has many strong APs, consider either Spirit Visage or Force of Nature (for excessive AP sources, say 2/3's of their damage income being AP based);
- If not, start farming Zhonya's Hourglass;

b) Lane phase over?

- Begin Frozen Heart;
- Consider Zhonya's Hourglass and a good MR Item.
- Build from there; things are REALLY relative at this point, there's a **** ton of items you can use ( SHurelya's Reverie to initiate if no one else has any alternative, plus nice HP and CDR, Warmog's if you already have nice base resistances and were already tanking like a beast, Randuin's Omen for dem gap closer melee AD's, etc)

I personally disagree with both Athene's Unholy Grail and Will of the Ancients on her: post RoA, Morgana's mana issues are very small, I don't even remember feeling them at that point. Frozen Heart can help with it if necessary. And WoTA is generaly a meh item on champs with inbuilt Spellvamp (Morgana and Swain specifically, I like it on Fiddlesticks) since you get a lesser percentage of that Spellvamp when you could just get damage outcome from elsewhere and make better use of what you have (Plus, Morg's spellvamp is more of a lane thing).
Thank you Byron for 2014's loudest laugh up till today

Why go tank when you can go ap?

3 ways to effectively build her.

1: The tons of DAMAGE way:
Abyssal, Hourglass, Rabadon's(throw in 2-3 doran's rings)

2: The right into the teamfights way.
Hourglass, Abyssal, Rabadon's

3: The i'm gonna be passive as **** and not deal that much damage in teamfights before lategame way.
RoA, leading into one of the above.

And as a bonus, the BALLZ TO THE WALLZ WAY!
1,5:
Abyssal, Rabadon's, Hourglass.
Ty MM and Blood for the sigs :3 | Rammus is comming back - heard it here first!

I think that should be obvious; "Because I can".

On topic, the idea is sound, but I'd have to see it in action to decide just how viable it would actually be for competitive play.

As someone already stated you wouldn't be much of an initiator but more like the executioner's axe if a good Sona or Malph ult nabbed the whole team.

I'd consider dropping Zhonya's for Abyssal since you're tanky already the need for 2 seconds of invuln seems almost pointless.

Insanity; a perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world.
Thx to effinvices for the sig!

If there is no other iniciator I think you should get Zhonya's Hourglass since you may barely survive with Black Shield.

What?

Abyssal is one of the items giving you most damage up front on almost any ap, it also helps you a ton in lane since mr is OP in lane.

Thoose 3 builds are THE only way to successfully build a morgana. Throw a doran's ring or 2 in there if ya feel like it.

but the point her should be tanking, not really dealing damage.
