It also depends on the carry in particular. Graves, to use an extreme example, has 51(+3.1) base damage (which is crazy high, third only to Corki if you count his innate and Twitch) but a terribly low .638 base attack speed. Attack speed items, which are percentage based, would be less effective on him than, say, a crit item, which would take advantage of his naturally high auto-attack damage. Kog'Maw, on the other hand, has only 46 (+3) base damage but a more-than-decent .665 base attack speed, which is why it is so popular to build attack speed on him (and why his Bio-Arcane Barrage keeps getting nerfed; too much synergy with his base stats).
Using this logic, a Last Whisper is a much better item for a character like Twitch, who has high base damage but is limited by his Spray and Pray to seven attacks before it falls off (devaluing attack speed) or Caitlyn, because damage and armor penetration help her Piltover Peacemaker and Ace in the Hole deal extra damage. It would not be good on Corki or Kog'Maw, who rely on true or magic damage, respectively.
And that's my argument for why "____ is pretty standard right now." doesn't really apply to every carry.

It does though.
AD carry should almost always get I.E. early or first.
LW is great in a solo lane early when your lane buys 150+ armor first and your name is Lee Sin or something to that effect.

Much higher damage. Twice the AD plus 25% crit chance plus an extra 50% damage each time you crit, which makes it synergize nicely with Phantom Dancer.
I'm sure that LW is mathematically better once your opponents reach a certain level of armour, but nobody is going to have nearly enough armour to make LW better that early in the game.
Even if they did, those crit boosts are soo good on AD.

IE and PD are still just better though. The damage from them is too insane to pass up.
