We could make for example a 10-15 tags and limit a guide to give itself max of 3.
Filtering later on would just be a dropdown menu (like for the champs we have now) if it meets guides that among those 3 it will have the one you picked from the dropdown list it would show this guide on the list.

I suppose that idea could work, but what about the endless amount of people who wouldn't tag their guide? It would just not come up in tag results? Would the mods have to add them?
Also, I think nomad's idea from the OP is awesome :-]

You could say that it needs at least one tag in the red text when you're creating a guide. Saying that it'll increase the chance of it being seen and such.
Anyone who is still updating or has a good guide will surely want to take the 2 minutes to edit it, right?
EDIT: never mind, someone already said it in a more effective way.
EDIT: Regarding the tags and the number I agree with DEWO. For example, a caster build may be focused solely on AP, or AP and Survivability, or AP and CDR. Just having one category wouldn't be enough since most guides would have the same tag. How exactly would the anivia guides differ if only was chosen?
Wait, another idea. The tags could have separate categories and you would only pick one each. Like the main role, how though you are and if you are jungling or not. For example:
Annie: Caster | Glass Cannon | Lane
Warwick: Melee | Squishy | Jungle
Janna: Support | Though | Lane
Rammus: Tank | Tank | Jungle
I guess it doesn't' work very well with a tank, but something along those lines.

How about we just stick to the basic idea right now?
Lane or Jungle.
Stick to the most concrete lines people can differ upon.
Like:
AP, AD, Hybrid, Tank, Bruiser, Support, or Other - these could be the sub category to Lane or Jungle
(FYI, Bruiser is a tanky dps, someone who can fight while taking damage)
(Other means any build that doesn't fit the other categories, and if they don't fit into one of those 6, that's definitely an "Other" build)
You have to structure tags in a guide/build system with separate categories.
Groups of tags need to stand apart from others out of logical necessity.
They just don't go together.
That's how tags would be able to naturally help people narrow down their searches on filters.
Also, they should be strictly "either/or" not "and/or"
Being able to pick AP + AD + Support or similar selections would lead to horridly ******ed chaos.
Example:
Anivia - Standard builds would be: Lane; AP
If you try to add more then 2 stat/style-based tags, it would get VERY COMPLICATED AND CLUTTERED.
If you want further tags:
I recommend tagging by items.
It would be under the Lane/stat tags...
"Select up to 3 items that define your build."
And there would be a window of items, with simple letter search like the editing has now.
This would allow people to search for guides with a specific item of their own interest.
Which brings me to my next point
There should be a filter for summoner spells.
A person should be able to select: "Shen" and then select "Flash" and get all the builds with Shen + Flash or, Morgana + Ghost, or Warwick + Clairvoyance, etc.. etc..

Don't forget roamers and counter-junglers.
The guide filter would be useful. I'm not sure how useful the defining items would be, though, as people generally come to guides looking for how to build a champion. Summoner skills I can see being useful, but items, not so much, unless we want to input that just to cater to the small part of the population that looks for rogue items on champs. Usually a strange item on a champion means that the champion is played differently, which would be what the guide filter would be for.
For example, if you're looking for a Miss Fortune with Rabadon's Deathcap, you could probably just filter for AP and you'd get more or less the same results.

though this is a small suggestion but one that is very useful for some b/c many champs like amumu can play both and a top rated guide may not explain jungling amumu. im not sure if this is hard to implement or not so im not sure of the "give and take" aspect of the suggestion
but any way thanks for all the work :)
thanks!
