When my grandmother on my mother's side found out about the risks of smoking, she quit (she's like 80ish now). And she was a heavy smoker. Now she gets the grains of the packets, mixes it with sugar, and just leaves it in her mouth to taste it - and she only does this occasionally.
If she can quit smoking, why can't others?

That's kinda creepy.
Yougan's right though. The differences in neurochemistry between different people make the strength of the addiction vary. The difference is noticeable immediately, even before a heavy addiction is formed. Some people will become addicted to smoking the moment they try it, others will take longer to develop a habit.
I've known people who quit smoking on a whim, and others who repeatedly relapse, taking years to quit successfully. It's not the same for everyone.
Also lol at Yougan's disclaimer.

Thanks to Hoppermh for the sig!
jhoijhoi: You comment wasn't rude, nothing to worry about :) The funny thing is that I didn't started this thread for that reason lol :P
All these facts about smoking are known to any individual ( or they should be), repeating them again was not my intention.
Tbh I don't remember how I started smoking or why, but I don't feel controled by it for the time being. But for sure I was not thinking as logical as I do right now.
My grandfather managed to quit it after the doctor said that he would die if he smoked one more cigarett^^ Most people didn't even knew the consequences of smoking back then.
Why I continue smoking? I don't know for sure. I just like it even if it sounds weird, still I try not to harm others by doing it.
I find insulting Chuck Norris far more dangerous^^ :P

-Come back with your shield,or on it-
If you're going to hate on people who smoke, you might as well hate on people who get abortions and everything else too...
The world is a ****ed up place.
But it's ****ed up enough that people should be able to do whatever the hell they want in peace as long as it's not breaking the law...
Unless of course they're ****ing idiots who smoke in the presence of children/teenagers/people with asthma etc, and in that case i'll kill them myself.
:)

Actually, I would consider smoking if it didn't have any health consequences.
I wouldn't if it was free on the other hand.
But since it has both I'm not even remotely interested in it.
It's just a big fat bad idea, imo.
Let me just introduce you to a magical leaf called marijuana

Searz: You may think that that's a rare case, but I think it's more common than you think. What kind of a role model is a father who has a habit that knows is killing him? What kind of a mother smokes while pregnant and could cause the baby to be born prematurely? What kind of grandfather are you if you smoke while there are children playing in your backyard? What kind of a friend are you when you smoke into a non-smoker's face, knowing you're going to die 6-8 years before the non-smoker?
People who smoke are only hurting themselves and the people close to them.
It's not smoking that impels them to do so. They have an addiction, yes that does spur it, but what really makes people ****ing ******ed in situations like these is that they don't have any sense of judgement whatsoever.

I don't see how aboriton is messed up
Also: Sorry to triple post but I'm like really tired and I don't know what's going on so I'd rather post separately, much more easier to put points quoting multiple people in separate posts than to copy/paste into one post.

Not that I disagree, but I have more tolerance for smokers of the earlier generations. It was a lot more common back then and less discouraged. When smoking was first introduced, most of the health consequences weren't known, especially not by the general public. Most of the people over 70 probably developed the habit before they understood how serious it was.
People nowadays should know better, but apparently they don't.
