In general I think there are enough reasonable people on Mobafire that +/- on posts wouldn't be a huge issue. Maybe one or two occurrences where a good idea is shut down or a bad idea is praised, but that happens anyway. This system would just highlight it a bit more.

And replacing +Rep with a +1 could mean that Rep becomes less meaningful as a whole since some of it depends on whether the reader knows to give a +Rep instead of a +1 or not. Making Rep more exclusive would be fine (+1 for funny or mildly helpful posts, +Rep for real hard-workers), though I'm not sure if it would turn out that way.

The other problem is creating two separate reward systems for posters, which can be a bit confusing for new users. It's hard enough getting people to figure out what +Rep is.

No, the thank you was never designed as an award system. Neither was the +rep ever supposed to be given so loosely.

Thank You is simply what it says. You are thanking them for their post, showing gratitude for what they said. It is rewarding in the fact that you feel good, but it should hold no Singaporean value except to let them know they're being thanked for their post.

+rep is exactly what it says. Giving more reputation to someone because they deserve it. It is something, though, that should be given rarely; for the very best of posts. Not something to be distributed as a Thank You.

You would be surprised.

Also, I think the levels of immorality in this thread are astounding. You'd really throw a child off a boat for your own luggage? Wow.

The Rep system is designed to reward members who contribute to the community regularly. If you contributed to the community, it usually means you helped someone out. That warrants a thank-you, which often means a +Rep.

I'm not sure what the system you're proposing is meant to accomplish.

@PsiGuard

hmmm...what I'm trying to accomplish.

Let's say I write a very long and thorough topic, and someone reply's. They say something like "this is awesome! good job.". Now, I get many of these reply's, do I reply to all of them? one at a time? bumping this thread so much it would annoy people? Or do I press the thank You button. Letting them no I appreciate their support.

This is not meant to be like +rep. it is simple. Thank you means Thank You. There is no hidden meaning to it, no significant advantage to getting one. You simply get a Thank You.
That is what I'm trying to accomplish.

I'll use an example. One time someone asked in a thread, "which champions should go solo top." He got a lot of brief answers from people who just named a few of the ones that they thought were good. Then I opened the champion list and sorted through all of the viable solo tops, coded them all and listed them for him. You'd think that going through that effort for someone would warrant a thank-you, right? Well he did, and I got Rep from a few people for doing it.

Are you saying that I shouldn't get any Rep for helping this guy, just a thank-you point and that's it? Are you saying that replying in one post just saying "wow, that was really helpful, thanks!" would be over-bumping a thread? I don't think so.

Do you just want to write a story for people to read and get a little number by it from people who thought it was good? If they're going to thank you, why wouldn't they just comment and let you know in their own words? What else is the point of the thread?

yes, you should get rep from that. I am saying a lot of posts don't warrant a rep, but do warrant a Thank You. If you put in such detail, then you deserve the rep.

No, I am not saying that (referring now to last paragraph). Yes, they can comment? they should. I did not say that? :/ What I'm saying is if they comment that, I shouldn't have to create a post just to say "ty" or "thank you". That is where the thank You button comes in.

Could be something like... Click +Rep once to give a silent rep... click +Rep a second time to give a public thanks which will display on the comment. Then a display under the comment could say "XXX, YYY, ZZZ and 5 others thank ShiftyCake for this post" or something.

If you're gonna thank someone for the post, why wouldn't you give rep? Well.. There may be situations. For example, if someone makes a really good point in a discussion and you want to throw your support in for them without making an empty "I agree" post, you might not necessarily want to give them +Rep...

I've seen some sites allow you to promote comments for different things like, +1 Funny, +1 Insightful, etc... I kinda like that as long as it doesn't get too cluttered and confusing... Not sure how something like that would mesh with +Rep, they could be independent of each other but I wonder if people would forget to +Rep.

Anyways, thinking out loud :)

I like the idea of hitting +rep twice to show support/agreement in a public manner.
